Taking charge of my well being!

Taking charge of my well being!

Hello All,

I decided today not to go to hospital. I have a new psychiatrist, meeting a new social worker next week and I have another lovely social worker who meets with me, as well as a great GP who is always there for me.

I decided today that it is time to take charge of my well being myself. So as I am exploring new ideas I will keep a little diary here and perhaps it is useful for some other people that are struggling along the way.

I really want to look at the good sides of my life history. I have a lot of trauma to go through, but I don't want to forget the good times. So I made a random selection of photos of my husband. I want to make a scrap book and capture the love and the memories. In the book 8 Steps to Trauma Recovery there is a section about start with the end, or something like that. I made it through the trauma and I want to celebrate that I made it and capture the good times while I am feeling better. Over time I want to add my kids, my friends, my family, my uni years, my school years... whatever, one at a time, savouring the good times...

I know that just because I feel well today, tomorrow is another day. But it is ok, I will work on my ideas when I can. When I feel I can.

Big hugs to all x

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi there. I am doing much better now. I sought help from my psychologist regarding my PND and after just 3 sessions i was starting to feel a little more uplifted.

The way she spoke to me about the condition made me realise and understand that PND is just a normal process that many women go through to some extent. That by in having depression post birth, allows a woman to numb out other factors in her life to allow her to cope with the new and overwhelming situation which is motherhood. Without it, too many women would give up on their children as it all gets too much. Its a strange way to think positively about a negative state of mind, but it really works, it really helps me u nderstand and most of all it makes me feel unashamed.

As for my issues of self harm, the urges are far and few between now. It was my strange way of protecting my baby from me. I know its frownd upon and technically it isnt a good thing, but in these situations it was the right thing to do at the time. Judge me as you wish, but i did what i had to do.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

@rick13. No one on this site makes judgements. We are all just here to support each other and to grow.
Fantastic to here how much happier you sound after only 3 sessions.
I think it's always important to remember that we did not cause our MI. We did not ask for it. And yes - PND is very common.
I like your explanation of why it occurs. And I'm happy that has made sense to you and offered you comfort.
And I know you did what ever you could to protect your child. Don't feel guilty about those decisions and don't let anyone tell you that you were wrong.
I think you are one very strong woman & that your child is lucky to have you as their mum.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

@Former-Member some net-free time sounds like great self-care. Ironically, my internet broke earlier this week - right in the middle of a busy period where I've pretty much been living online. It's forced me to not spend time on the Internet, and it's actually been ok! Aside from not being able to work as I usually do, it's meant that my down period has not been infront of screen.

Hope you enjoy your net-free time, and hope to hear from you soon!

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @R1CK13

PND is pretty common - I think I had it after my dd was born - she was in another hospital because of her early birth and I was told I was lucky to have a baby when I complained about feeling blue - and kept my mouth shut after that

But it was not helpful - coping with a baby is a huge task - omstars - . I have written this before - among the mountains of nappies and other laundry and the breast or bottle feeding - or both, and the clutter that was never there before, the baby bath on the table hours after bath time, the fatigue and whatever else, there is the BABY. Somewhere in all of that is the BABY.

And the baby will not let you forget it either,

I had a friend who was pregnant when she told me she had nightmares that she put the baby away in a cupboard and forgot it - ahhhh - this never happens

But considering the huge emotional and hormonal changes that take place when we have a baby - the first one particularly - it is surprising not every mother has PND - and it is important to know - as someone else has said - it's not your fault and it is not a weakness and you have done the right thing to see a therapist -

And I am really glad you are feeling better already - better than you were anyway - and it won't last forever and the baby will get bigger and eventually grow into a child - and these early weeks pass very quickly - it just seems as if they last forever

I am so glad you have found us - keep posting - and remember that all the baby-stuff does have a good-side - but suffering through the early weeks is hard - and listen to granmas - they have been through the works - they are good sources of knowledge too

Hi @Former-Member

I have noticed you haven't been around much lately - or rather - I haven't seen you

But it is good to take a break from the net when you need to - it recharges the battery - it allows other parts of our mind to work

We all need to get away from electronic media for a while

So take your time - you will be welcome when you return

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi Flower,
You have done the hardest but most important thing. Taken the first step,on your own and down the route you are making. I say route than path because It will have diversions and rough boggy patches at times. But you have my utmost admiration and inspire meto do something similar. I totally get what you mean about photos where your smile doesn't reach your eyes.
I started to think on that for myself and it occurred to me that it doesn't matter how old those photos are or how fleeting that moment was,as long as it was a joyful one. Start with one 'acorn' photo or memory and although it may take time you'll end up with an Oak tree and we all know how strong they are.
Sending my best wishes and thanks for giving me hope and direction.
Take care of you

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Good morning

@utopia so glad you're feeling great and keep remembering that when you feel low, we all have our ups and downs x

@R1CK13 great to hear that you are starting to feel better and there is an understanding why you felt / feel the way you do. I'm happy to hear you seeked support and did not let it go out of control. Hope to continue hearing for you and all the best for you & your baby x

@BlueBay big hugs your way x

@CherryBomb how wonderful to have some forced net-free time. I am pondering a lot why MI is so much on the rise and I think being online & up-to-date at all times, as well as peaking "in the neighbours garden" at all times, has disconnected us from reality. On this forum here we share our ups and downs, but on "normal social media" that is a lot less common and I have heard of people being bullied when they shared "too many" down days.

@Decadian I have tried to stay off the net a little lately, partly because I cannot grasp what is happening with me and partly because I would really like to focus on the here and now, in reality, not virtual reality.

@Yarnartisan thank you so much for your message. I too hope for you, that your path will be side-lined with flowers and not only have rough boggy patches at times. Loof after yourself and stay in touch.

This is me over & out until mid next month!

Please all take good care of yourselves and remember the good times. I will miss you x
