Taking charge of my well being!

Taking charge of my well being!

Hello All,

I decided today not to go to hospital. I have a new psychiatrist, meeting a new social worker next week and I have another lovely social worker who meets with me, as well as a great GP who is always there for me.

I decided today that it is time to take charge of my well being myself. So as I am exploring new ideas I will keep a little diary here and perhaps it is useful for some other people that are struggling along the way.

I really want to look at the good sides of my life history. I have a lot of trauma to go through, but I don't want to forget the good times. So I made a random selection of photos of my husband. I want to make a scrap book and capture the love and the memories. In the book 8 Steps to Trauma Recovery there is a section about start with the end, or something like that. I made it through the trauma and I want to celebrate that I made it and capture the good times while I am feeling better. Over time I want to add my kids, my friends, my family, my uni years, my school years... whatever, one at a time, savouring the good times...

I know that just because I feel well today, tomorrow is another day. But it is ok, I will work on my ideas when I can. When I feel I can.

Big hugs to all x

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @Former-Member, long time no see. sorry to hear you're in hospital, didn't realise. Do you feel its helping? Wish you all the best. Hang in there.

With understanding PERSONAL VALUES, opening a thread to have a conversation with yourself might help - sounds like a practical 'brain storm' 'gp therapy' exercise. Why not.

I know what you mean about finding ones own 'personal values' Its confused me over the years too. I try live up to christian values & social norms (i mess up a lot). But to search within, there's things I do feel passionate about and behind that, I believe, is 'my personal value system' This topic, of 'values' is what my Psychologist is trying to help me with a.t.m. too. What I've learned so far, to put it simply, my personal values seems to be WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO ME. Things like 'pet hates' or expectations of others all clues.

For example, my family treat people like objects to vent at, it really gets my back up, so, therefore, I realised there's at least two values i have behind this - KINDNESS & RESPECT... to others. I feel passionate about this (even though I cross the line myself sometimes). The good thing I'm learning to do, which helps reduce the upset, is to realise that these values are MINE, not theirs!

Hope this helps. Being self aware is really hard, I know, exhausting when you've been taught all your life to ignore it or deny it. Because someone else's value system deems it 'selfish' or not 'of service to them' Actually, writing to you is helping me, by making my brain think more (yes, it happens lol), think harder on the topic & understanding why I react so strongly to some things. But that's just me. Let me know your progress with it.

Time to get my bones out of bed, make a lovely hot cup of tea. 🙂

Hope you have a good day today Flower 🙂

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Good morning @Former-Member!
An imaginary friend is a good idea but maybe think about what you would tell a 12 year old you. What things have you found most useful. Is it your honesty? Creative approach to issues? Is it your capacity to remain consistent and dedicated through thick and thin?

Your core values are those fundamental that underscore your daily decisions and behaviour. Please don't confuse yourself by seeing only the negatives. The way you write shows a huge amount of positivity. Maybe it is time to go back and read this thread from the start.

Take care
Hugzzz 💕

Just one little addition @Former-Member :

As Mahatma Ghandi said, "Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny."

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @Former-Member

Stay in hospital as long as you need to - the population keeps changing there and the new people didn't see you at the beginning of this particular journey so you can be yourself as you find yourself

That is a tough task - finding our your personal values is really hard work - and important

But don't wipe the slate clean - you don't need to go back to the beginning - examine the values you already have before ditching the lot

You can start your own thread of Personal Values - I am sure other people will be interested - we all have to examine these in case they are faulty - and the only bad thing about faulty personal values is failing to change them when you find out about them

And life goes on

And life is a long story about growing and changing - and both can hurt but I was once told this

The pebble in your shoe is bigger than the mountain in front of you

I seem to remember that you did not bring up many of your issues on a previous admission - it takes time to sort it out - and when your psychologist asked about other people when you were talking about your personal vaues - it could be that was a question that could be answered either way - and a challenge

From what I can see it that you are growing - hard stuff - growing - hard stuff - changing

But as you look - do not ditch your values without looking at them - they might be really great

The whole thing varies from person to person

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

@Kurra Hi.. Think dole sorted after 2 trips there. Got rego transferred, new wiper blades, haircut, few other things that were bugging me. Bumped in supervisor from old work, he asked if had told anyone was here, I just said I had a few things to sort first. ..So, small, but important wins today.. More tomorrow 😀

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hello All and thank you for your contributions.

I feel like I have just broken a mirror, torn up a family portrait, ripped out my lifelines and turned my life upside down. I will have to sort through the lies and betrayals.

I don't think I can yet understand the impact of the memories and feelings that have come back in my life. Being sexually a used by an outsider and not getting the protection from your family is awful, but then also getting the same "attention" from your own brother just makes me so sick in the stomach.

The more I expose myself to these feelings, the more confused, angry and upset I get.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Oh @Former-Member. That sounds so hard. To go through when younger & then relive through therapy. As hard as it is, hold on. The nurses and psychologists etc will help you through this tough time.
Sending you my best.
