Taking charge of my well being!

Taking charge of my well being!

Hello All,

I decided today not to go to hospital. I have a new psychiatrist, meeting a new social worker next week and I have another lovely social worker who meets with me, as well as a great GP who is always there for me.

I decided today that it is time to take charge of my well being myself. So as I am exploring new ideas I will keep a little diary here and perhaps it is useful for some other people that are struggling along the way.

I really want to look at the good sides of my life history. I have a lot of trauma to go through, but I don't want to forget the good times. So I made a random selection of photos of my husband. I want to make a scrap book and capture the love and the memories. In the book 8 Steps to Trauma Recovery there is a section about start with the end, or something like that. I made it through the trauma and I want to celebrate that I made it and capture the good times while I am feeling better. Over time I want to add my kids, my friends, my family, my uni years, my school years... whatever, one at a time, savouring the good times...

I know that just because I feel well today, tomorrow is another day. But it is ok, I will work on my ideas when I can. When I feel I can.

Big hugs to all x

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Good morning,

it's too early to be up, but I have been restless all night. I prepared something for my therapy last night and that was a pretty bad decision from my side. It feels like something is pulling me back to resolve some of the feelings I am having, but I am not sure if I can do it on my own. I don't see the sense in going to hospital where you learn CBT and coping techniques, one of my coping techniques backfired last night and left me raw. I think I would just like a place where I can throw a massive tantrum as long as I need to and scream and shout and get it all out and then slowly learn how to rebuild my past. I don't need group sessions, I need someone to take me through my life step by step and uncover all the hurt and bring it into persepective - and preferably not in 5 years of therapy...

Time is so precious, I don't want to waste my life on the past.

Hi @Former-Member
Gee I'm feeling the same way. I would love to chuck a tantrum scream hit punch kick and let it all out. It's hard when it feels like it's still inside and it just needs to be out.
I wish you have a good day today. I know you're not too good. I'm thinking of you. Take care. Xxxooo. Sending you lots of hugs.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Morning @Former-Member. I'm comfortable throwing a tantrum at home so long as nobody else is home. But I do worry that maybe I won't be able to stop.
I liked the CBT in hospital , but I'm glad I have my psychologist to go through memories with. It's painful and scary if I'm on my own.
Are you still seeing a psychologist? (my memory is not the best).
I would like sessions twice a week - with the odd break when I'm too ittitated. Want it all done and over within a year or earlier. They say you can break an old habit in 30 days. What's taking them so long!
I hope your day gets better

Good work Flower, Sadgirl and Utopia

Having a private tantrum is perfectly in order - it will clear out the works

I'm sitting in the sun, I had an ice cream and listened to a busker. No better place to be than circular quay. I'm trying to be gentle and compassionate.
I feel so empty and lost inside. I have asked the question before, what if I understand what this world is all about one day and I don't like it anymore?

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

@Former-Member. You deal with things when they arise. Try not to focus on the future and 'what ifs'. It's hard not to go there.
You may find life offers even more good things, not just buskers and ice cream and sunshine.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

@utopia

The first movie that ever emotionally upset me that much that it took my Dad hours to calm me down was Watership Down. The second movie was Apocalypse Now where I cried for hours in my brothers arms. I think both regretted the decision to let me watch the respective movie.
I've tried for many years to make a difference and I still am in my circle of influence. But I have never understood the cruelty in the world and I have never understood why we cannot just be peaceful. I still cannot accept that I cannot have the world. All the pain and hurt, all the suffering. And I felt like that before I experienced abuse, death, civil war...
I am scared and I don't think I can take anymore hits.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

That is an excellent question @Former-Member

"What if you finally understand what the world is all about and you don't like it"

Well - yes - I actually understand that question and I can give you an answer

You will try and change it - I have -

I made sure my son had not died in vain

I have demonstrated in public for different issues - from gaining an increase in wages for Female Clerks when I was 19 - to marching and chanting against the French Atomic Tests at the Muruora Atoll in the Pacific - I have written to politicans speaking against proposed mining at Antarctica - the damming of the Gordon River in Tasmania - I joined a proactive group locally to get traffic lights on a busy road in this area - I started young and kept going

This is what you will do if you find out you don't like the world - you will be fine then - I can promise you

It is a powerful feeling to have the chance to speak in public and on TV about subjects that concern you

Doing things like this for the world outside yourself might seem hard - but doing them is a wonderful feeling

Go for it - find out all you can

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @Decadian

That used to be me. I lost faith many years ago. People stand up when it concerns their own back pocket, their immediate surroundings, but not the world. The world only acts when there is an interest for themselves, there is so much genocide happening all the time and everyone just turns a blind eye.

Sorry I am in a terrible mood today.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @Former-Member,

I understand you are in a mood today and you are very worried that you don't like the world. I think a lot of us here on SANE can relate to feeling that way. If you are depressed, the world can seem much worse than what it is.....

I like to try and think of the world as a "neutral" place. When good things happen to me, it looks like a good, supportive and happy world. When bad things happen to me, I see the world as a threatening, lonely place.

But good and bad things happen to all of us... I think that ultimately they balance each other out. The world is what you make of it.

Seek out positive people and try to engage in positive experiences. Make your own world a good one, filled with like-minded people who care about things.

Yes, there is heaps of 'badness' out there but you give the badness more power by focusing on it. Which, unfortunately, is what depressed people do. i know the feeling.
