Taking charge of my well being!

Taking charge of my well being!

Hello All,

I decided today not to go to hospital. I have a new psychiatrist, meeting a new social worker next week and I have another lovely social worker who meets with me, as well as a great GP who is always there for me.

I decided today that it is time to take charge of my well being myself. So as I am exploring new ideas I will keep a little diary here and perhaps it is useful for some other people that are struggling along the way.

I really want to look at the good sides of my life history. I have a lot of trauma to go through, but I don't want to forget the good times. So I made a random selection of photos of my husband. I want to make a scrap book and capture the love and the memories. In the book 8 Steps to Trauma Recovery there is a section about start with the end, or something like that. I made it through the trauma and I want to celebrate that I made it and capture the good times while I am feeling better. Over time I want to add my kids, my friends, my family, my uni years, my school years... whatever, one at a time, savouring the good times...

I know that just because I feel well today, tomorrow is another day. But it is ok, I will work on my ideas when I can. When I feel I can.

Big hugs to all x

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @Former-Member,

Glad your meeting with the psych went okay, that you got a lot off your chest and agreed on a couple of things. I imagine, like me, you only have half hour sessions. In that space of time it sounds like you achieved quite a bit really. How often do you see your psych? I hope you get to have another session soon so that you can perhaps see some more satisfactory progress.

The interview for the short film went really well. I used to have a budding career in that field about 15-20 years ago, which is about the time I made the short that is being screened in the program later this year. Now I no longer have any career but do find creative meaning in putting together videos on the home computer for sharing on the internet and sometimes at festivals. I am almost 54 now, so it's a different stage of life and the lack of career doesn't worry me as it once would have. I understand that I chose a very difficult profession and that for most people it doesn't work out in the long term. I'm still glad to have had the experiences I had with it earlier on and to be still doing it now in a much more modest way.

You have mentioned wantin grounding techniques and I wonder do you practice any kind of breath meditation? That is one thing that can help with grounding. I can describe a simple exercise if you wish, just let me know.

Hugs for your sad feelings after your day.

@Former-Member. Curl up and cry. Have a nap if you need to. You achieved a lot today. Well done.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Thanks to all of you thinking of me, it's actually been the first time that I've come home and curled up in my hubby's arms and cried. I've been encouraged for months now to open up a bit more to him. I think today was a turning point.

Hugs to all of you and I hope you are all ok xoxo

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

I had a restless night. There is nothing I can say. I've had haunting memories and flashbacks for a long time now, but I think the trauma work is beginning now.
I just want to curl up with my teddy and vanish.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

I really tried hard this morning. Even made it to the gym for a 30min walk and am now sitting at work, empty and paralysed. They tell me be kind to yourself - there is nothing I want to do right now. I called my GP, I've taken my meds, I've read my safety plan. I feel like my body has stopped working and my brain says, no thank you, just listen to the fan of your computer or the cars outside.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

I guess with time it will become easier to deal with the aftermath? I cannot get into work today in my mind. There is no relieve. I'm sitting in a car park in front of a shopping centre. I sit in my car a lot. Don't want to get out of my car often, just sit here and wait for time to pass.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Hi @Former-Member wow it sounds like that was a big thing to have a cuddle and a cry with your hubby last night. Sounds simple but sometimes that's really what we need isn't it? Do you feel like you could do the same tonight when you get home? Sometimes it can be really grounding to just sit and look/listen to the sights and sounds around you... Is the car like a safe place you can go to when you're struggling? You know you can hang out on here if you need company while you sit.

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

Oh @Former-Member it really sounds like you are struggling so much.
I wish there was something I could say to make you feel better. But I think sometimes we just have to go through this shit when we're in the middle of therapy.
Well done for managing to do yiur walk today & for making it into work.
Sending hugs and kind thoughts your way

Re: Taking charge of my well being!

@Mazarita the car is a safe place with doors locked, keeps me warm and I can put music on. Also had a little nap. Will go back to work now to write an email and then take the rest of the day off. My safe places when I don't feel I can keep myself safe are other places.

@utopia no one ever told me it would be easy 😞 I think I made big progress yesterday but I am just so scared now, I think that is what i am feeling. I feel so much, it's just coming up

@BlueBay thinking of you too

Have to see the GP later so I will be safe.
