@mudsum@Phoenix_Rising@CheerBear@NikNik@Former-Member Hi, I read this book a few mths ago. Though I felt triggered in places, it's an interesting read. Another good book is Trauma and Recovery by Judith Herman. Hope you don't mind me butting in.

Re: BOOK CLUB: The body keeps the score

Hey @Maggie. You're not butting in 🙂 I too am finding it triggering but validating and interesting too. I'm left feeling a little hopeless about how many professionals seem to practice in a way that is not trauma aware/informed/sensitive. I'm planning on discussing some of what's come up for me at my next psych appt next week (like @Phoenix_Rising has done) and hope it will be a good thing for me too.

Nice to have you come past book club 🙂

Re: BOOK CLUB: The body keeps the score

@CheerBear I've come across that too, my very first post was about finding it hard to get help. The more we educate ourselves and others eventually helps us all get through. Good luck with your psych appointment, we'll be cheering you on. Before I go, I have found a social worker who is brilliant, mother are out there.

Re: BOOK CLUB: The body keeps the score

Great to hear you have found a great worker @Maggie. I was very lucky to have a fabulous social worker as well (super sad to have had to part ways as she made a big difference) and I now also have a great counsellor. My psych is great at what they do and knows me really well, but I'm not sure how helpful what they do is for me right now. I'm going with the idea that as long as it isn't harmful, it can't be a bad thing, and sometimes they can be very helpful to have on my team, which is great.

I'm planning on reading some more tonight, and definitely want to be well into some of these later chapters before my appointment.

Re: BOOK CLUB: The body keeps the score

Hi @Maggie, It is super nice to see you here in our bookclub. The best counsellor I have had was my uni counsellor and she was a social worker by training. I think social workers tend to be much more helpful than psychologists (and that's coming from someone who has a psychology degree ). It is two years since I finished my degree and I am still grieving for my uni counsellor a LOT. I find it so hard that I FINALLY found someone who could actually help me...and then I lost her again.

@CheerBear I can definitely relate to your feelings of hopelessness regarding the way most mental health professionals practice. Still, I am educating (A) and it sounds like you are educating your counsellor, so we are well on our way to educating every mental health professional in the country. Was it @Former-Member that we were discussing this with? I think it was.

Re: BOOK CLUB: The body keeps the score

@mudsum@Phoenix_Rising@CheerBear Actually the mental health system gave up on me, that was how I found my social worker. She was willing to lay aside her previous experiences and walk with me. What a gift!!! I read whatever I can get my hands on now and learn myself. What a journey eh, each one different, unique. I only recently found my voice, it come and goes. Not physically, the courage to speak and hope there is something worth listening, writing. Thank you for letting me join in.

Hi @mudsum, @Phoenix_Rising, @CheerBear and @Maggie

I want to join in on your book club! I've been wanting to read this for a while and have read the similar title "The Body Remembers", which references TBKTS and Van Der Kolk a bit so wanted to read this too.

Is everyone up to chapter 13 or have you moved past this already?
