My life with depression and anxiety

My life with depression and anxiety

Hello Everyone,

I'm Dahlia. I feel like telling my story - of at least part of it - to anyone who feels like listening. Perhaps some of you wonderful people can relate.

I have struggled with metal health symptoms as far back as 8 years of age, perhaps even before that. My main problem is moderate to severe anxiety, I can also have panic attacks and a tendency towards depression. I do not really know why. I was depressed on and off even as a young child. I had very dark thoughts and my parents did not know what to do. I don't think child psychologists were a thing back then.

I was afraid of the dark, had tantrums, nightmares and was incredibly shy.

In my mid-thirties I had a complete breakdown and thought I was going crazy. I lost a lot of weight, couldn't sleep and had constant racing thoughts. I saw a GP who referred me to a psychiatrist who prescribed a lot of different medications. It was a six week wait to see a psychiatrist as an outpatient and during that time I suffered immensely with daily panic attacks.

Eventually the tablets seemed to help me, and I felt calmer and was able to gradually begin to get on with my life. The psychiatrist said I had major depression but did not feel the need for any further diagnosis. I fought my way back from depression and eventually stopped taking the medication. The psychiatrist did not know the cause of my depression but felt it could have had a genetic component.

I still lacked self-esteem and found it difficult to express my emotions. I often keep things bottled up and focus more on others than myself. I don't have negative feelings about myself or any self-destructive behaviours, although I am shy and introverted and like being alone. For the most part, I do feel some-what positive about my life and grateful that I have recovered from depression. It was 20 years ago that I had that breakdown.

During the past 20 years, I sought counselling a few times for severe anxiety related to events in my life - for example, when each of my parents passed away after long illnesses. The counselling did not solve my problems but at least it was an outlet. Other things I sort counselling for were work-related stress and the end of an important friendship.

Prior to having any kind of counselling, I don't think I ever felt listened to - by anyone in my life. People give you some of their politeness but rarely have time for you - that it how I have always felt. I think that sometimes even now, my closest friends are not exactly interested in me as a person. I tend to be the one doing all the listening. I would like to be able to change this around, but I don't expect my friends to be able to give me the same level of understanding as a professional counsellor can. That is too much to ask.

The other thing is that I was diagnosed with autism at about 50 years of age. This was a relief and helped me to understand myself better. I always thought that I was different but now I have a reason for that difference. Anyway, autism is a misunderstood condition that manifests in different ways in different people. Probably for me - I just find life very confusing and have to spend heaps of time and effort working out stuff that just comes naturally to others. That could have contributed to my childhood depression - but I'm not sure if the two conditions are related or not.

Lately I have decided to go back into counselling or therapy with a view to reducing my anxiety. It seems to be a long wait to get in anywhere. I think I would also like to go back to see a psychiatrist for an assessment to see if I have anything else that needs treatment, I presume the waiting times are very long these days. I don't know.

I see that I have written all this in a very matter-of-fact way. Believe me, even though it doesn't sound like it from the way I write, I am a very emotional person and spend a bit of time crying in private and quite a lot of time otherwise trying to manage and control my emotions!

Thanks for reading my story.

@DahliaDreams

I have done various meditation and breathing practices for decades. I did a bit of yoga but find it hard on my wrists and neck, so its not my preferred exercise. I also do physio and gardening. The repetitive sets can be calming and pottering in the garden helps ground me.

I know a few people who find the average psychiatrists gap fee too much. I guess for me, its essential, I guess I have less cappacinos than most people, to afford it.

I hope the hub works out for you.

@Appleblossom

I love gardening too. I love being outdoors. When we moved into this house, I ignored the garden for years because I was so busy and stressed. Now that I have the time, I am slowly getting the garden in order and it is beginning to take shape. I do my yoga in the garden when the weather is ideal. We have a lot of birdlife and some blue tongue lizards too.

It's great that you can afford to see the psychiatrist @Appleblossom. I might be able to go on a public waiting list to see one - even in the capital city - but I guess I would be waiting for years. I don't know if they would even take people who mainly just have anxiety and autism. I tried to look online, but I think they focus on people who are so unwell that they need inpatient care.

@Jynx - thanks for your support. I am finding it helpful getting my thoughts in print so as I can read back over them. How are you today?

Today I woke up without anxiety again. I didn't need to take the sedative type pills yesterday and I hope today will be the same. I'll leave those pills for Xmas day - lol.

I am still avoiding social gatherings. I successfully declined one yesterday and felt good about it. I am also declining to do things for other people right now. Normally I'm pretty available, but I think that has to change. I don't even think I'll be answering the phone to certain people.

@Peck @Lapis_Anteater @REDLINEZ750 - hello and hope you have a good day today.

@DahliaDreams your garden sounds beautiful Enjoy.

I am not sure why you are not getting on waiting lists. I have often heard the opposite problem, that they reject people for being too complex. my family has also experienced a great deal of HARM from psychiatry, so it can be a very mixed but expensive bag.

I am triggered a bit my nephew from my brother who died when they were doing the big so called "deinstitutionalisation" move at Mont Park, closing the psych ward. He visited yesterday, was beautiful, but so many painful associations.

that sounds encouraging about the waiting lists, anyway. I just read up on a few different public hospital websites yesterday and I interpreted what I read in a certain way. I think I just need to call them and find out.

Yes, the medical profession has a lot to answer for too. I know of people experiencing great harm. I even read a book all about one woman's experiences. She went psychotic after taking a certain antidepressant. Instead of taking her off that antidepressant, the psychiatrist prescribed more and more medication. So she became more and more unwell. Apparently it's like one in every 2 hundred people who are prescribed with antidepressants experience drug-induced psychosis. But don't quote me on that statistic.

It actually happened to me too. Another story for another day.

I am so sorry to hear about your brother. It's so terrible that that happened. My thoughts are with you.

Hi @DahliaDreams I know what it's like to live with anxiety. I've lived with it most of my life and it's increased over the years. It can be quite debilitating! I wonder if you can relate to this.

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Love it @DahliaDreams yeah my psych was telling me something about how we often need to externalise our thoughts in some way shape or form in order to process them. So I'm all for it!

My day has been ok, I am not a fan of the heat so mostly hiding and being a bit of a grump 😅

Love that image you shared @heartathome!! Always helps to get that kind of perspective, I think it's one of the things I love about this community too - you can share some of your deepest, most shame-inducing thoughts and have like five other people chime in and say 'omg me too!'

Hello @heartathome @Appleblossom @Jynx @Peck @Lapis_Anteater @REDLINEZ750 and all others here today.

Thanks for your inspirational message, @heartathome

My anxiety is getting a little better, it tends to flow like that. Usually I have about ten days of dread followed by a time where I am healing. I have butterflies in my stomach, like a kind of nervous tension, but I don't have the intense fear anymore.

Last night I vowed not to drink, but I drank anyway. I think I was celebrating not feeling so awful anymore. Anyway, don't want to brag or anything but I never seem to get hangovers? I don't know why. I just wake up hungry. I had a sugary breakfast extravaganza.

I am still avoiding social things until Xmas eve, when I have no choice. My family are coming here and staying for a couple of nights. I will brainstorm ways to handle any comments from them that I don't agree with so as there are no tensions. Sounds like the imposable task to me. 🤔

How is eveyone doing today?

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

I'm glad your anxiety has calmed down at the moment. I used to drink but needed to stop because I don't have a moderation button. It's broken! It's an all or nothing mentality. Balance is impossible.

I had a sugary breakfast extravaganza 😄 What did you have?

Your Christmas sounds like a big one, a bit tricky with your family and their comments. Are you still looking forward to seeing them? I have no family around me (my son is an hour away and working over Christmas) but have been invited out for Christmas day lunch, which will be better than staying home alone.

I hope you're having a good Sunday @DahliaDreams ! 🙂💛

Hey @heartathome

I glad you have a Chrissy lunch to go to. Much better than being alone, I think, especially if you only have to turn up. Do you have to bring something?

I am trying to keep my Christmas cooking simple, but I still seem to have a lot to do.

For my breakfast, I had coffee with honey and milk and choc chip cake spread with nutella. Yummy.

Today I trying to get the house in order and also doing a bit of indulgent Netflix watching.

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Thankfully I don't have to bring anything which is a bonus for me! I'll just bring my coffee sachets (de-caff) and drink that for the day. @DahliaDreams I know. Very boring these days! 😄

Breakfast sounds very chocolatey!

What kinds of stuff do you like watching on Netflix? I got stuck on watching negative real-life stories for many months (nothing in moderation) until I realised that watching them wasn't good for my mental health! :face_with_rolling_eyes: These days I don't have the concentration span to watch anything more than a couple of minutes.

I admire anyone who can cook! 🙂 Everyone who knows me well laughs at my cooking skills! Yeah. I'm really bad! 😆 It doesn't help that I don't like cooking either. I don't cook at all these days. Meals on Wheels aren't too bad at $9 a meal.
