My life with depression and anxiety

My life with depression and anxiety

Hello Everyone,

I'm Dahlia. I feel like telling my story - of at least part of it - to anyone who feels like listening. Perhaps some of you wonderful people can relate.

I have struggled with metal health symptoms as far back as 8 years of age, perhaps even before that. My main problem is moderate to severe anxiety, I can also have panic attacks and a tendency towards depression. I do not really know why. I was depressed on and off even as a young child. I had very dark thoughts and my parents did not know what to do. I don't think child psychologists were a thing back then.

I was afraid of the dark, had tantrums, nightmares and was incredibly shy.

In my mid-thirties I had a complete breakdown and thought I was going crazy. I lost a lot of weight, couldn't sleep and had constant racing thoughts. I saw a GP who referred me to a psychiatrist who prescribed a lot of different medications. It was a six week wait to see a psychiatrist as an outpatient and during that time I suffered immensely with daily panic attacks.

Eventually the tablets seemed to help me, and I felt calmer and was able to gradually begin to get on with my life. The psychiatrist said I had major depression but did not feel the need for any further diagnosis. I fought my way back from depression and eventually stopped taking the medication. The psychiatrist did not know the cause of my depression but felt it could have had a genetic component.

I still lacked self-esteem and found it difficult to express my emotions. I often keep things bottled up and focus more on others than myself. I don't have negative feelings about myself or any self-destructive behaviours, although I am shy and introverted and like being alone. For the most part, I do feel some-what positive about my life and grateful that I have recovered from depression. It was 20 years ago that I had that breakdown.

During the past 20 years, I sought counselling a few times for severe anxiety related to events in my life - for example, when each of my parents passed away after long illnesses. The counselling did not solve my problems but at least it was an outlet. Other things I sort counselling for were work-related stress and the end of an important friendship.

Prior to having any kind of counselling, I don't think I ever felt listened to - by anyone in my life. People give you some of their politeness but rarely have time for you - that it how I have always felt. I think that sometimes even now, my closest friends are not exactly interested in me as a person. I tend to be the one doing all the listening. I would like to be able to change this around, but I don't expect my friends to be able to give me the same level of understanding as a professional counsellor can. That is too much to ask.

The other thing is that I was diagnosed with autism at about 50 years of age. This was a relief and helped me to understand myself better. I always thought that I was different but now I have a reason for that difference. Anyway, autism is a misunderstood condition that manifests in different ways in different people. Probably for me - I just find life very confusing and have to spend heaps of time and effort working out stuff that just comes naturally to others. That could have contributed to my childhood depression - but I'm not sure if the two conditions are related or not.

Lately I have decided to go back into counselling or therapy with a view to reducing my anxiety. It seems to be a long wait to get in anywhere. I think I would also like to go back to see a psychiatrist for an assessment to see if I have anything else that needs treatment, I presume the waiting times are very long these days. I don't know.

I see that I have written all this in a very matter-of-fact way. Believe me, even though it doesn't sound like it from the way I write, I am a very emotional person and spend a bit of time crying in private and quite a lot of time otherwise trying to manage and control my emotions!

Thanks for reading my story.

@heartathome

that's good to hear that you have meals on wheels. When I was a little girl, my parents used to volunteer for meals on wheels and I remember driving around with them to all the houses and serving the different people. It was a good experience; I'm glad they took me.

On Netflix I am watching The Big C right now. I have just finished Nobody Wants This and a few of the Love is Blind things. I don't like anything to do with crime or murder or anything too graphic, but I'm fine with the lighter shows. Usually I try to find a movie that I haven't seen in years - like something from the 80's or 90's.

I only like cooking when I can cook exactly what I want, when I want and don't have to bend to anyone else's preferences. Which reminds me... dinner is not that far away.

I guess I haven't watched much on TV for a couple of years now @DahliaDreams . I'd rather listen to music.

That's a nice memory about going with your parents to deliver Meals on Wheels. Thank you for sharing that! It brings back memories of my parents driving for them too. I'm grateful for those meals! 💛

If you wanna practice some brainstorming for handling inappropriate comments, more than happy to do so if you like! 😉

Hi

Sorry for the late response. I’m currently studying psychology with the hopes of becoming a clinical psychologist. I still have a way to go as I’m studying part-time, but progress is progress. What did you study in university?

It’s great that you have a supportive sister. It sucks being the emotionally unstable on in the family, but I guess someone must do it.

That’s great to hear. You sound very responsible. Do you have any plans for the holiday season?

Hey @Lapis_Anteater

that's wonderful that you are studying psychology. There will certainly be lots of work for you once you graduate. Psychologists seem to be in short supply.

I studied art at uni. I really had the time of my life there. Those days are long gone now. I still paint sometimes, but something seems to be holding me back these days... I was in a bit of a slump even before I recently became anxious. I just felt "stuck" I guess.

I have the whole family coming for Xmas, I am not really looking forward to it much. How about you? Any plans?

Hi @Jynx

I should definitely get myself a plan for handling any conversations or comments I don't like.

Right now, I think the best idea would be to not reply to anything I find upsetting. To ignore it in a polite way. Perhaps look at the person and say "Okay, that's interesting" and then change the topic or get back into the kitchen and come out with more food. It's a little passive, but passive is my go-to.

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Good Morning @heartathome @Lapis_Anteater @Jynx @Appleblossom and all the people here.

I am celebrating a win as I didn't drink alcohol last night. My anxiety is at bay (for now). Right in this moment I am content.

Whatever the day brings to me I will try to deal with it.

How is everyone feeling today?

Morning @DahliaDreams

Well done to you for not drinking last night! Are you trying to give it up or cut down? I don't know this part of your story. Please remember you don't have to tell me anything. I won't be offended! I'm glad your anxiety is okay at the moment, and you feel contented! I hope you have a good day!

I'm all okay at the moment! Listening to Fleetwood Mac and waiting for my cleaner. 💛

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Hi @heartathome

I like Fleetwood Mac too - I saw a Fleetwood Mac cover band at a festival a few years ago. A good experience.

Yes, I have a bit of a drinking issue, but it only flares up when my mental health gets bad. Otherwise, I do enjoy a drink, but I don't think about it much or I go days without necessarily feeling like taking a drink. It's directly related to my anxiety levels, unfortunately. But I will drink when I'm not anxious just to enjoy it, too. I love wine in all its varieties. I'm not so much into spirits.

At the moment I seem to be able to control myself. [edited by moderator], I tend to just stop. But still not exactly proud of myself drinking day after day.

Today is day two of sobriety. 😊

How are you feeling this evening?

Hello @DahliaDreams

Woops. Looks like something was edited. 😁 I've had a few of them. The moderators are good like that.

I love that you've seen a Fleetwood Mac tribute band and enjoyed it. I follow one on Facebook. I've seen them twice so far and will go again next time they're around my area. Unfortunately, I don't believe that I'm allowed to say who they are.

Two days is great! 🙂 I hope you never feel any judgement from me regarding whether you drink or not. I have my own substance issues so I'm not one to point the finger. If I did, I'd have three pointing back at myself!

I'm doing okay! I've just hung out at home today and have no plans for tonight apart from listening to music and hanging around the laptop. Pretty boring. There are far too many people outside, for me, at the moment. I'm hiding away from the madness!
