My life with depression and anxiety

My life with depression and anxiety

Hello Everyone,

I'm Dahlia. I feel like telling my story - of at least part of it - to anyone who feels like listening. Perhaps some of you wonderful people can relate.

I have struggled with metal health symptoms as far back as 8 years of age, perhaps even before that. My main problem is moderate to severe anxiety, I can also have panic attacks and a tendency towards depression. I do not really know why. I was depressed on and off even as a young child. I had very dark thoughts and my parents did not know what to do. I don't think child psychologists were a thing back then.

I was afraid of the dark, had tantrums, nightmares and was incredibly shy.

In my mid-thirties I had a complete breakdown and thought I was going crazy. I lost a lot of weight, couldn't sleep and had constant racing thoughts. I saw a GP who referred me to a psychiatrist who prescribed a lot of different medications. It was a six week wait to see a psychiatrist as an outpatient and during that time I suffered immensely with daily panic attacks.

Eventually the tablets seemed to help me, and I felt calmer and was able to gradually begin to get on with my life. The psychiatrist said I had major depression but did not feel the need for any further diagnosis. I fought my way back from depression and eventually stopped taking the medication. The psychiatrist did not know the cause of my depression but felt it could have had a genetic component.

I still lacked self-esteem and found it difficult to express my emotions. I often keep things bottled up and focus more on others than myself. I don't have negative feelings about myself or any self-destructive behaviours, although I am shy and introverted and like being alone. For the most part, I do feel some-what positive about my life and grateful that I have recovered from depression. It was 20 years ago that I had that breakdown.

During the past 20 years, I sought counselling a few times for severe anxiety related to events in my life - for example, when each of my parents passed away after long illnesses. The counselling did not solve my problems but at least it was an outlet. Other things I sort counselling for were work-related stress and the end of an important friendship.

Prior to having any kind of counselling, I don't think I ever felt listened to - by anyone in my life. People give you some of their politeness but rarely have time for you - that it how I have always felt. I think that sometimes even now, my closest friends are not exactly interested in me as a person. I tend to be the one doing all the listening. I would like to be able to change this around, but I don't expect my friends to be able to give me the same level of understanding as a professional counsellor can. That is too much to ask.

The other thing is that I was diagnosed with autism at about 50 years of age. This was a relief and helped me to understand myself better. I always thought that I was different but now I have a reason for that difference. Anyway, autism is a misunderstood condition that manifests in different ways in different people. Probably for me - I just find life very confusing and have to spend heaps of time and effort working out stuff that just comes naturally to others. That could have contributed to my childhood depression - but I'm not sure if the two conditions are related or not.

Lately I have decided to go back into counselling or therapy with a view to reducing my anxiety. It seems to be a long wait to get in anywhere. I think I would also like to go back to see a psychiatrist for an assessment to see if I have anything else that needs treatment, I presume the waiting times are very long these days. I don't know.

I see that I have written all this in a very matter-of-fact way. Believe me, even though it doesn't sound like it from the way I write, I am a very emotional person and spend a bit of time crying in private and quite a lot of time otherwise trying to manage and control my emotions!

Thanks for reading my story.

Hey @DahliaDreams

Keeping cool under the air-con is a smart idea. I’m glad you were able to reach out to your doctor and get something that will hopefully help you feel better. Just try to be careful as sedatives can be addictive (you probably already know that but just in case). Nice work getting jobs done. I think there should be virtual psychiatrists available if you’re interested. GPs can definitely be useful, but psychiatrists have access to more resources related to mental health. I really hope it does blow over for you though.

My day has been alright. Not too how down here in Melbourne. I was meant to study more than I did today. Laid in bed a lot. It’s alright though, I’ll catch up during the Christmas break.

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Hi @DahliaDreams. Today has been well. I attended a therapy session and caught up with a friend. We are both actively working to build up our social skills as we both experience self isolation at times.
don’t know what region you’re in, yet it’s worth a shot looking. Having contact with a GP is good, please however I caution you about ‘own research’. Research isn’t about proving something right but examining all areas. I would hate for you to speak with a medical professional and feel that because their answers don’t match with yours it leaves you feeling worse. Definitely speak with them about what you’re looking to heal from and go from as it should be a partnership. Hope your next path in journey is beneficial.

Hey @Lapis_Anteater

what are you studying if you don't mind me asking? I spent a lot of time at university, I used to love learning, but I'm not so sure anymore - I think I've lost that bug. I think I'm heading towards retirement actually - as much as people (friends and family) are urging me to work. We'll see.

I'm glad you get along well with your brother - I have a sister that I am close to. She's never been tested, but I definitely see some autistic traits in her, too. She is lucky to be a more emotionally stable person than I am - I think it can be the luck of the draw.

Don't worry about me being addicted - I have had a long history of taking meds and I am careful. Plus, they just don't give out repeat prescriptions for the pills I prefer anyway. But I can understand that.

Hope you are having a great evening. x

Hi @Peck

I'm glad you caught up with a friend today - if it's a supportive person then social time is really great for us. I just went for a walk, and two different people said hello to me "Hello Dahlia" !! Because I'm autistic, I can't even recognise people when I see them briefly and out of context - its embarrassing but I see the funny side of it too. I say "Hi" and I keep walking. Now I am back home I think I realize who those two people were. Too late now.

Unfortunately I don't trust doctors too much, because of a few things that happened in the past. I do think they are well-meaning though. I feel like I need to diagnose myself and then tell them which treatment will be effective but of course I can't be too pushy or they will rebel. It has been that way between myself and the medicos for a long time. Nothing worse than a doctor who rebels against my wishes (joking).

I will be careful, don't be concerned. What are you doing tonight? I hope you have a great evening.

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

House guests can be difficult, even if they do their best. Personal space is so important. I am lucky these days. I have had secure personal space for a couple fo decades, though it was pretty bad for a long time before that. @DahliaDreams

I am not sure about meds and prn. I have heaps of anxiety. Mostly I feel the feelings and keep going, but sometimes I notice varying effects. Sometimes I wake suddenly, even though they may have helped me get to sleep. Good luck finding a doctor. I know its tough in regional areas.

I have been fairly stressed recently and pretty low about a lot of things in the family, but I had a good long zoom session with a couple of ladies. May have found new friends. Lifted my mood.

@Appleblossom

I am glad to hear that you have secure and safe living arrangements, where you have time to yourself. All my life I have always lived with other people, in one situation or another. I am lucky that my partner is often out working so that I can have my downtime. But the house guest we had here really threw me off balance.

What do you do to manage your anxiety (if it's okay to ask?) Normally, when my anxiety is only mild, I do deep breathing and some yoga at home. I watch yoga videos on youtube or I just do my own routine, since I have been practicing yoga for a very long time. I also listen to relaxation meditations while lying in a darkened room. Sometimes talking with a friend can help too, just to explain the feelings to someone can make them not seem as scary.

One of my friends is a hypnotherapist and she helped me recover after my last major anxiety episode, which as 18 months ago now. I was doing pretty good there for a while.

It sounds like you have some new friends! That is great. I used to kind of like trying to make new friends but for now I don't think I'll go there. I have a lot of acquaintances here, but some of them are very feisty so I don't know if I really need the stimulation right now. A lot of politics.

Re: My life with depression and anxiety

Good Morning to all - @Appleblossom @Peck @Lapis_Anteater @Jynx @REDLINEZ750 and anyone who would like to join in

No need to reply to this if you are busy.

I did some research yesterday and found out that seeing a psychiatrist might leave me $600 to $800 or more out of pocket, after the Medicare rebate. This seems like a lot of money,

Twenty years ago, when I was referred to a psychiatrist by my GP, I believe I was out of pocket $30 per appointment. I did not think this was too bad at the time, and I saw him fortnightly.

Right now, I'm going to stick with the free psychology service that a local community health hub offers. There is a 4-month waiting list, but since I've had anxiety for around 48 years, I suppose I can wait.

The thing is, I know what I've got, and I don't need a diagnosis. I know more or less how to manage it, it's just that it keeps coming back. I was looking for fresh information or any new treatments, but lets face it, unless you are lucky enough to get on a clinical trial, you are going to have to pay a small fortune for any new treatment.

How is everyone else feeling today?

Hi @DahliaDreams.

ive been great today. I’ve managed to complete a few tasks. Sounds like you have a plan that fits best with you. I’ve been humbled by my experience of an overactive nervous system these last 3 weeks.

@Peck

I'm so glad to hear that you have been great today. Strangely, I have been a lot better today too.

I woke up without the anxiety - I just felt relatively normal, whatever that is.

It's been stinking hot here today, so I've just done more stuff that needed to doing around the house. The air-con is getting a workout, I hope it's up to the task.

Have a great evening.

Aww thanks for sharing so much of yourself and your story with us @DahliaDreams it's really lovely to see how much folks can relate to what you've shared!

Also soooo glad you have your space back! I'm also someone who very much needs time to myself to recharge, I would struggle having a house guest for so long!

Glad to hear today has been less of a wild anxiety ride for you!
