Mental Health issues in older people

Mental Health issues in older people

Hi

I wasn’t sure where to put this:

I am just wondering if they’re are many older people on these forums? Like people 55+ who may have mental health issues going into (or being in) their retirement and how they are handling them.

@Till23 hey, good to meet you.

@PeppyPatti @outlander I knew you were young but had a lot of health challenges which maybe made you seem more mature. They always pegged me as older than my age. But I am mid 60s.

@Dimity Glad things are a little better

@Shaz51 Glad you are enjoying retirement. I am semiretired….almost…. trying to be as active and productive as possible….

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

Yes @Shaz51 - I’m at the one day at a time stage.

I have had 3 major illnesses in last 3 years. Then my father came to live with me until his passing. So I could sometimes have 8 medical appointments a week between the two of us! So I totally understand the lots of appointments!

One of my dogs also passed away during that time. I still have one dog but he will not be here for long.

Tonight I went to an information session for a volunteering opportunity which sounds good. I put my name down for it.

I can’t do anything that is too costly because I have retired early so no pension or other benefits, for years.

I have cut down on psychology sessions because cost is too much.

I’m glad to hear that @Dimity.

I am hoping to get to that stage!

Hi @Appleblossom

Yes, I feel the need to be productive, as in doing something worthwhile. Because I got a lot of purpose and self worth out of working, I think I’m finding being suddenly retired very challenging.

I am trying to find things to fill the huge gap of work.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

@Shaz51 I am sorry to hear about your kidney disease. I hope you are able to keep on top of it.

You certainly have had a lot going on, you are obviously very resilient to get through so many major challenges and are continuing to do so.

Thank you for sharing your story it has been helpful to me to know other people have managed major challenges

I am currently trying to adjust to this new lifestyle

The information session went well and I have put my name down so I will see what happens.

@Till23 @Shaz51 @Dimity @PeppyPatti

Finding the best level of activity can take experimenting. I tend to like being busy. Got a busy week ahead.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

I agree @Appleblossom I also like to keep pretty busy. I had quite a busy Sunday. I am feeling suitably tired, so hopefully I’ll get a good sleep, which is something I rarely manage.
