Mental Health issues in older people

Mental Health issues in older people

Hi

I wasn’t sure where to put this:

I am just wondering if they’re are many older people on these forums? Like people 55+ who may have mental health issues going into (or being in) their retirement and how they are handling them.

Yes @Appleblossom, @Dizzy4, @TAB, @PeppyPatti, @Shaz51, @Dimity

I will start a volunteer gig - which hopefully will work out for half a day a week.

Sports clubs are another possibility - I have been doing my sport for a couple of years now

Heart Foundation is looking for people to run walking groups (I’ve never been to one but apparently a group of people go walking once a week (or possibly more- not sure)

With regards to living in country towns - Red Cross have volunteer roles where you call an elderly person - so presumably you can do that remotely. (Again I’ve never done - just seen the advertisement)

I just searched (googled) volunteer roles. Seek have a volunteer search as opposed to job search as well.

Councils usually have landcare groups.

There’s Meetup groups- although might not be any in your area if you’re remote.

Pubs and clubs often do activities like trivia nights. I am not a drinker but used to go to pub trivia with work colleagues once a week (that was many years ago now, in a different place, in fact a different state.

They are a few things I just thought of

@Till23 thanks for the suggestions. Not much relative to me, but yr post did remind me of having to jump thru hoops just to volunteer to do dishes in a kitchen, and maybe a bit of meal prep. Leave home at 6am and travel 56km was something i tried, but even once a week was too much for me. :face_with_rolling_eyes:

Oh yeah @Dizzy4 that is quite an effort and cost to you in travel alone for a volunteer job.

Sometimes you can do activities online, like learn a musical instrument.

Sorry, I can’t think of anything else at this time.

Except pets can be really good mates.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

The drive could be worth it @Dizzy4

I went to table tennis for a couple of hours today. It was good exercise and the people were friendly and there wasn’t any expectations to be a good player, so it was fun and we had a few laughs.
I felt quite good afterwards- all those endorphins and serotonin released lasts for quite a few hours, and that’s aside from the physical effects.

So maybe making a whole day out of it, might make the trip worth it.
