Mental Health issues in older people

Mental Health issues in older people

Hi

I wasn’t sure where to put this:

I am just wondering if they’re are many older people on these forums? Like people 55+ who may have mental health issues going into (or being in) their retirement and how they are handling them.

Yep @Till23

A good night sleep can't be taken for granted.

Hope we both get one.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

Yes, Hi @Till23 . My mental health episode and subsequent and continuing recovery started when i was in my mid thirties. Im now 68. Ive just had a relapse of sorts (pychosis)and as time goes on im weary of fighting so hard to think normally. I guess being older takes so much more out of us, hey. The battle rages on (Deep Purple)💪. ive recently weaned myself off antidepressants and antipsychotics after 30 years and this is the consequence.

Retirement sucks, altho i never worked fulltime. Im unmotivated, have no purpose, despite so much effort trying to be involved in many things. Lucky me i can still go to the gym and exercise most days. Thats about the only thing that keeps my boat afloat. Anyway, lets just keep chugging along👍

@Dizzy4 it's hard to know sometimes if it's relapse or withdrawal.

You're fortunate to still be active. @Till23 @Appleblossom too. I've had physical limitations but hope some will be addressed by major surgery I'm having in a couple of days.I think depression can limit us too.

Hey @Dizzy4

Nice to hear from you.

It’s great to hear you find the gym helpful.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

Yes @Dimity depression can definitely limit physical activity.

Physical activity can also be helpful for many MH conditions, which is one of the reasons I try to keep up with some sort of exercise, even if it’s mowing the lawn, which I did this afternoon, and other gardening.

I hope you have a good outcome from your surgery and have a smooth rehab. and that allows you to increase your physical activity

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

@Dimity yes youre right about the withdrawal probability. Wishing you a positive outcome of your surgery. It really helps us mentally when we can get out there and moving.☀️

Thanks @Dizzy4 @Till23 . I've tried to walk every day, and hope to get back to it as soon as possible. I enjoy the exercise and getting outside.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

@Till23 Ive floundered around for years looking for things to do in retirement. I live in a rural town..not helpful. Volunteering, learning musical instruments (online), learning new crafts (online). Its certainly challenging somedays to endure the length of the days. Eveyone needs a purpose, and something meaningful to pursue. Persevere....you'll find something.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

@Dizzy4 I live in a regional centre, so there’s quite a lot to look into, but not as easy as a capital city.

I’m looking at volunteering opportunities and some courses and other activities, it’s early days for me, so I think it will take a while, but I am continuing to seek out things, whilst also being mindful of cost.

Re: Mental Health issues in older people

Yes being productive is a big one for me.

I'v always had this weird urge to see a psychotherapist for me and when they were young, my 2 sons.

It's weird but reflecting back I had two absolutely terrible ones I stuck with for 9 years. But today I realise I needed them to break down my defences.

But getting older --; phew.
