vitamins

vitamins

Hi all. I have lived with mental illness over 20 years now. It's only recently I feel much better, less depression. Coincidentally, or maybe not, I'm also recently diagnosed with low vit D. I now take vitamins for the D deficiency and vitamins for stress. I wonder if others have tried vitamin supplements and how it's working for them?

Re: vitamins

I take fish oil and vitamin D amongst other things.
Intriguingly, are many illnesses that are associated with low Vitamin D including:

Schizophrenia
Depression
Obesity
Metabolic Syndrome
Diabetes
Multiple Sclerosis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Chronic Fatigue
Heart disease
Alzheimer's Disease
Etc

Also interestingly, some of these disorders are Autoimmune disorders or involve inflammation and Schizophrenia has been found to have autoimmune involvement and both depression and schizophrenia have been found to have neuroinflammation,so I wonder what's the connection?

Re: vitamins

If I am sliding into a depression, it is almost guaranteed I have not been drinking enough fluids. I have a lap band insitu and have food issues. Vitamin tablets are generally sized for horses, I find Floradix tonic suits me.

When you are in therapy, for me it was years and mucking about in the sewerage of my brain, that is exhausting... Be gentle with yourself. I usually spend a day in bed at least every month to 6 weeks. I am MUCH better now but holding up a public persona is wearing as well.

It's good that we learn as we go about what triggers us and what helps us. I have had to go back on the antidepressants despite trying without them. It's sometimes best to take care of yourself first.

Re: vitamins

I survived an intensely psychologically abusive relationship, it was 18 months with him, and 30 months since I got out of there, survive but with ptsd, from the abuse, and from the psychosis he seeded, fed, and threaten to make real. Anyway after 4 years of extreme stress, and fear my body was struggling, I had a range a physical problems arising on top of my mind just constantly caught on flashbacks, catastraphising, hyper vigilance, and fading psychosis. I went to a kinegilogyist and was diagnosed that I was depleted in B3, magnesium, D, the omegas 3 6 and 9, and zinc. The change was profound. My mind almost instantly became calm. Amongst other effects. He explained that due to living in a state a hyper fear and arousal, that my system had depleted all my stores of these vitamins and minerals.

Re: vitamins

Sheybridge,

Im really happy to hear it has helped you feel better.

Its true that stress can deplete some vitamin stores, particulary magnesium.

I find it really interesting that many people with some form of Psychiatric symptoms/illness or Neuropsychiatric illness have vitamin D deficiency,as confirmed by blood tests.

Do you personally go out in the sun much?

Re: vitamins

Thanks for the good words, and kind energy, as for going out into the sunlight, for natural vit D? When I was acute with psychosis, and the PTSD, and through the 18 months living in an abusive relationship, where he used drugs, coercive control, sleep deprivation etc to undermine me. I had very little outside time. In total I went from spending hours daily out doors to having no time daily outside. When you live with a drug addict who try's to get you hooked on his drug, and then manipulates and controls you, you end up living like an addict, developing vampire like hours of living, up for days on end, too paranoid to go out in the day, venturing out only in the night, and that lasted up to 18months. Then the fear he put in me, during my recovery that people were out to get me, made it incredibly difficult to leave the house, so in total 3 1/2 years of no solid outside time.
Just a comment having the PTSD, psychosis, depression. And also the self medicating behaviour along side bpd, in my experience one of the biggest hurdles on a day to day basis is to get out doors. Even now and it's been 2 1/2 years away from him, and I live with a nice sunny back yard, I struggle to step out into the yard, as I feel unsafe and vulnerable out doors, but I force myself, and really enjoy the sun when I do.

Re: vitamins

I take chia omega, cholorphyll and B12 Liquid spray daily and it's been amazing for me.

I've recently been recommended to take Vital Greens which i've heard some amazing things about.

I think one thing to keep in mind is whether you are on medication or not, making the choice to take vitamins or supplements of any kind should be in consultation with your doctor.

Obviously having a mental illness means our brain chemistry is different so even though they may be natural, they might still have an adverse affect on us.

What interesting stories. I would like very much to study all these things your all writing about. The last month or so have been very weird for me and think I'll go to the pharmacy this week to take some of these.....I bought a magazine a couple of weeks ago that advertised something called floradix herbal iron extract which want to try.....

What's B 12 liquid spray ?
Chlorophyll?
Chia omega for ?

I've been spending a lot of time with my ex husband......diagnosed at 17 chronic paranoid schizophrenia. In the past year, he has quit drinking and is on the methadone program.......started as teenager, he's a different man but can't quit smoking cigarettes.......

In response to 'mental illness the trick is to probably keep stress out of your life. I know if I've got any stress, I practically 'fall apart, ' on the spot.
