vitamins

vitamins

Hi all. I have lived with mental illness over 20 years now. It's only recently I feel much better, less depression. Coincidentally, or maybe not, I'm also recently diagnosed with low vit D. I now take vitamins for the D deficiency and vitamins for stress. I wonder if others have tried vitamin supplements and how it's working for them?

Hi justanother47yr,

Thank you for your contributions to the forum and for providing support for others as you face your own challenges. I just wanted to add to the discussion about vitamins and remind readers that it is always a good idea to let your Dr know if you are going to take supplements. In some cases, supplements can interfere with medications so make sure you keep yourselves well.

Have a good day,

Durango.

Re: vitamins

I tend to roll my eyes with the dietary stuff we are bombarded with, but I enjoyed reading these posts. The most important thing I can do when feeling low is to flog myself getting outside, yes it is a major thing for me, but once outside I do pick up very much. I have discovered the joys of weeding...,it is like popping zits or something, very satisfying but way less gross.

I had a lapascopic tummy band put in years ago, and it has become very problematic. I hope to be rid of it mid June, but the dietary thing has been very difficult to manage. I loathe vitamin supplements as the whole idea of being healthy yet swallowing more pills just does not make sense to me. I have found taking a liquid tonic from the supermarket works for me....not being a horse sized tablet is great, and I tend not to have spend time emptying my stomach contents in the bathroom is good too.

I am NOT criticising those who take vitamins in any form, I am a great believer in if it works for you, then go for it

Re: vitamins

This is a very interesting conversation about vitamins and the role they can play in keeping us well.

I thought I would share my experience because a couple of weeks ago I started seeing a naturopath and she has been fantastic. I also got an iridology reading done. Found out that there are a few small things going wrong with me but that all of it can be taken care of. My blood pressure reading was way low and the naturopath was surprised that I wasn't fainting.

The biggest surprise was that I found out my body wasn't absorbing any vitamin B at all. All of those vitamin B tablets I was taking was a complete waste of time. I did a special diet for 2 days to do a body reset and had to avoid anything with vitamin B in it. Seemed to work because when I went back I had a good reaction to the vitamin B which I can now start taking again.

I am now on vitamin B, D, a cognitive powder, massive vitamin C dosage, rhodiola, fish oil and a couple of other things.

So far it's been interesting and I have noticed a few positive changes. My naturopath believes that all of these things will help me manage my anxiety and fix the other little things going on in my body too. Time will tell but I am hoping for the best.

Yes, there are studies to show that blanket multivitamins can do harm if you don't need them. It is important to take what you are deficient in, and in consultation with your doctor.

Re: vitamins

I have had a vitamin company for 10 years. I am a bit wary about snake oil salesmen, and dont go for many rememdies. However, I started medicating self around 2001 in conjunction with health professionals.Every year I take a bottle of Vit D, iron, calcium, and starting with Coenzyme Q10, as well as my fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin.

I agree that getting outside is important to well being.

Re: vitamins

Hi. I'm still here. I'm not doing so well. Life stress, marriage problems and work stress has triggered anxiety and low moods. I'm in the process of changing meds (antidepressants ) and trying to figure out if i can keep working while i transition. I'm taking both (old and new) antid at the moment and stop one in 10 days. What are peoples experience? I work full time, office job. They don't know about my illness. I may choose to go to hospital if i cant hack it, the withdrawal i mean.

Hello @Former-Member You have been on the site for ages!

Sorry things are tough at the moment.

I have never changed meds in that way so I am not much use on that issue.

Are there other things you could do to help .. go away for a weekend and see a show or do a workshop?Look after yourself

regards Apple
