New puppy new life new Thread.

New puppy new life new Thread.

Both Cookie and I had a big day today. Me getting the house, supplies, space ready and really very anxious about new responsibilities of being a puppy mum. Cookie with travel strange place and being left here by her family.

We had cuddles for a while till she was less anxious her heart was racing. Then I encouraged her to explore a bit with some treats. She is now having a doze in her crate next to me and all seems right with the world. I think I could nearly doze too.

The constant hyper alert status my body has been in seems to have mellowed. I didn't know how bad it had gotten till it went.

I'm sure things will keep going up and down but I haven't felt calm in a very long time.

Another quote.

This is how I feel about my studies. Ive finally found something that I'm good at and really enjoy. At the same time getting into it is really difficult atm. I'm not going to let my trauma get in the way of continuing it but at the same time I get a really significant stress reaction now when I try to get started with studying. I don't know how to resolve this right now. I just know it's not going to be another wasted chance.

Another Pratchett quote.

Ginger: You know what the greatest tragedy is in the whole world?... It's all the people who never find out what it is they really want to do or what it is they're really good at. It's all the sons who become blacksmiths because their fathers were blacksmiths. It's all the people who could be really fantastic flute players who grow old and die without ever seeing a musical instrument, so they become bad plowmen instead. It's all the people with talents who never even find out. Maybe they are never even born in a time when it's even possible to find out. It's all the people who never get to know what it is that they can really be. It's all the wasted chances.

Hey @Gillie1

I just wanted to step in to say congrats on your new puppy. It sounds like she is helping you to become so much more active in the world and your neighbourhood. I hope that really pays off for your well-being!!

I have thought a lot about getting a dog too, but at the moment, I am just feeling my way by taking house-sitting assignments where I can look after someone else's dog(s).

So far, I am becoming aware of how much having a dog around can radically improve my mental health. So, I am so happy that you have recently brought Cookie into your life.

I will look forward to catching up on your adventures with her!

All the best,
Sol

Re: New puppy new life new Thread.

@sol_87 @She is definitely helping me get out and about. I was basically housebound before so its a big adjustment but so worth it.

It doesn't take away my fear, I'm having a meltdown every time I get home atm but expect that will change.

The biggest change is I'll be in the middle of a meltdown and accidentally drop an iceblock and Cookie distracts me for the next 5 minutes discovering ice is cold on the nose.

It means I have a responsibility to manage myself better to meet her demands. It is also great at getting me up and moving at home. Having to feed her means I remember to eat. Stuff like that.

She is quiet and gentle most of the time and hilarious too.

It's a huge responsibility though. A major cost and scary thing to be responsible to someone so dependant on you. Oh and there's lots of poop to deal with. And lots of laundry.

For the right pup that suits your lifestyle dogs can change your world.

@Gillie1 - it is so good to hear that you are noticing those positive changes in your life. I know exactly what you mean about the little things. But sometimes, those things are the things that really count!

And I know it isn't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a big responsibility to care for a puppy. And sometimes I feel like being responsible for another being can lift us out of ourselves.

I can really see how the right dog could change my world. I hope Cookie continues to be a positive force in yours. 🙂

She sounds like a gorgeous soul.

Re: New puppy new life new Thread.

Did you say a retriever? @Gillie1

Re: New puppy new life new Thread.

I used to have retrievers @tyme I'd love another but they are too big for my small place. My last two dogs were retrievers and they were gorgeous. I've probably talked about them a fair bit.

Cookie is a staffy cross. Very gentle.

Staffy @Gillie1 ! Lovely! I though you said Cookie was a retriever... I looked at the photo, and I'm like....um.... retriever?

Re: New puppy new life new Thread.

I went to the shops today. It was payday so cookie and I walked to the tobacconist and chemist. Cookie was very nervous out on a busy road with lots of new experiences. She had fun chasing a little feather that was blown by the wind and it got stuck on her nose which was super cute.

I rang lifeline before hand to talk my fear out so coped better than I thought.

Focusing on Cookie, encouraging her helped me. Everything is so new to her but she did really well. I got back home and didn't have a meltdown after. Cookie is now exploring her shuffle mat for kibble and enjoying herself. I am just chilling. I'm getting very achy with the walking bring on my scooter. Cookie is such a good girl.
