Socialising for Beginners

Socialising for Beginners

Thanks for the encouragement @Jynx
I put it in the Looking After Ourselves section as I believe the forums social spaces do a good job, of allowing the online community to get together in various social ways. I am more interested in working out or working through real life socialising experiences. Where we do not have the protections offered by anonymous online interactions.
Socialising for grown ups who have been isolated and are trying to re-enter general community groups or just trying to meet people is no easy feat. Its more difficult than for children and puppies as we usually have a lot more baggage, whatever that may mean.
From the online dictionary for a start:
verb: socialise
1.
participate in social activities; mix socially with others.
"guests can socialize in a real holiday atmosphere"
2.
make (someone) behave in a way that is acceptable to their society.
"newcomers are socialized into orthodox ways"
Similar words:
interact
converse
be sociable
mix
mingle
get together
meet
Seems to require more than simple social skills training.
I started one therapeutic relationship with that as my main goal. I knew I had limits and was willing to learn, but she was not a great a teacher and eventually admitted it was not her strength. I have accepted that I am relatively introverted and there are advantages and safety with that, but also the yearning for human connection persists within me. So I do not really want to keep myself to myself. This forum has been a wonderful opportunity for me to try different things and meet people.

Just tagging a few who I feel may be interested, but this discussion is open ...

Just tidying up books and saw Marcia's Welcome to Country which I am glad she did and I bought. I just found her a bit strident recently but then again, politics is a dirty game and she is under attack. @Historylover

Must press on with my work today, @Appleblossom, but just had to add that I watched an Aboriginal award program about a year ago. Perhaps Deadly Awards? Steven Oliver was the presenter, and although I had previously found him rather irritating, his hosting had me glued to the entire program. Other hosts drag the suspense about the winner painfully long, but he got directly to it, was entertaining, and it was so refreshing. He was a fabulous host.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

I love indigenous senses of humour. Almost had to get that before I could appreciate more typical or traditional humour ... Brit, Euro, Aussie ... etc .. it just goes deep into my experiences too. I am interested informed respectful nuanced discussion about it all

Eg

I loved Maynard's The Season and went to it at Sydney Opera House. It was hilarious. I was so thrilled and proud they were getting that level of attention and respect. After it I passed by the Street people at the Occupy Movement for Homelessness ...

I think this might be going a bit far ....

@Historylover You kick those goals. Cheers.

This seems to be relevant for socialising. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Hi @Appleblossom . O k . I took the worm and googled it. Beauty, Its a keeper.. I just call it my gut. street smarts... but there you go....

A2 puts me a disadvantage, so I grew some wings and use them when I'm just not sure. Flight. . .

I enjoy social forays, but there is always one in every crowd. An alpha with a chip, control freak..

someone waiting for you to say something and twist it into a solution to there bad mood..

Thats just life on the plains . Week antelope fatten voracious teeth. I enjoy it...

Make it a game. defences . strategies.. out thinking the bullies and one lane thinkers.

and I fall a lot, get up, and bob and weave again.

You, I do have to say, sound pretty healthy lately. Determination. good for you mate,

but a good education is a stand out for you too.

Which I don't have but who cares, Ive got you.. I'll just suckle your knowledge pool if I

ever hit an impasse.

So thanks for that Appleblossom. You can bet I'm going to rummage through your lead

when the corks back in the bottle.. You should make it one off those, topic for discussion things

that tide and amber22 are always doing..

Take care old friend . . . and good one... tonys mb 1

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Hey @tonys Always great hearing from you with your inglorious turns of phrase.

I am coming to terms with why I tended to give my power away before we even got to figure out how to dodge the bullies and one lane thinkers ... so even tho I had a little experience of the streets I never got street smarts. Tended to have too long a delay on my thinking and responding to things. Patience is a virtue, but .... forgiveness a virtue but ... A chiropractor stood up for me once at the end of my marriage, he said 'careful they are playing you for the village idiot'.

If we were playing a board game I could get strategy reasonably enough to play, maybe not be a standout winner but not be a loser. But with people it rarely worked out. Anyway better late to learn than never ...

I find polyvagal theory interesting cos it relates to some of my feelings or felt experience better than a lot of the feelings words people typically mention.

I like that she talked about ventral ... front ... being the social side.

Hey @Appleblossom Well if life could be such that we could be tied to chairs and made to debate

things out till the real facts emerged and sunk in, my money would be on you every time.. Thats why folks are nervous of a toe to toe with you.. Without even saying a word, I recon your brain may intimidate more people than you realize.

There are 3 kinds of people. { 1) those that make mistakes, can see they made them, " may need

help and time" but they get .. it. and they will say sorry..

2] Those that make mistakes but are too arrogant or lack the character to apologise. and

3} Those that are just to blind stubborn and arrogant to even realize, that they could ever

possibly be wrong.

If you are ever next to number 3 on a trip to Schiphol, economy class, boy. .... It's gonna be a long flight... !

I too had a chiropractor.. who told me 3 valuable things.

1] the world is not fair, Never was . never will be..... deal with it..!

2] By far, the most cunning dangerous and treacherous animal on the planet is man..

Buy a dog...

And. . .

3] If another one of your cheques bounces, I'm gunna snap your neck like a carrot fella....!

That said... I better go see what's in the cooking pot. Smell is driving me nuts..

Always good learning from you @Appleblossom . You have a nice cruisy evening

and I hope you visit me again soon my friend. tonys m b1

Re: Socialising for Beginners

hey there @Appleblossom Lucky you. you don't need a parachute to get of a bus. I spent the trip

watching the handle on the door and a flight attendant watching me.

I meant to say but didn't bother because I know you've already figured out a while back, I have a fair amount of damage to front lobes. Rest of the brain pitches in, but couple that with my sense of humour, and socializing is a train wreck. . . . Not that ever stops me.

Belgium.. It was all scaffolding when I was there. They were restoring everything. One reason I feel so sad about Ukraine. All that history...

Well thanks for everything mate. You make lazy boy think a bit... Its good. G, nite mate.. tonys mb1.
