Socialising for Beginners

Socialising for Beginners

Thanks for the encouragement @Jynx
I put it in the Looking After Ourselves section as I believe the forums social spaces do a good job, of allowing the online community to get together in various social ways. I am more interested in working out or working through real life socialising experiences. Where we do not have the protections offered by anonymous online interactions.
Socialising for grown ups who have been isolated and are trying to re-enter general community groups or just trying to meet people is no easy feat. Its more difficult than for children and puppies as we usually have a lot more baggage, whatever that may mean.
From the online dictionary for a start:
verb: socialise
1.
participate in social activities; mix socially with others.
"guests can socialize in a real holiday atmosphere"
2.
make (someone) behave in a way that is acceptable to their society.
"newcomers are socialized into orthodox ways"
Similar words:
interact
converse
be sociable
mix
mingle
get together
meet
Seems to require more than simple social skills training.
I started one therapeutic relationship with that as my main goal. I knew I had limits and was willing to learn, but she was not a great a teacher and eventually admitted it was not her strength. I have accepted that I am relatively introverted and there are advantages and safety with that, but also the yearning for human connection persists within me. So I do not really want to keep myself to myself. This forum has been a wonderful opportunity for me to try different things and meet people.

Just tagging a few who I feel may be interested, but this discussion is open ...

You and I, both @Appleblossom

Although, I did have an assignment given me by my counsellor last week. I was confused yesterday when she didn't ask to see it...

How's your morning so far?

@Kyle1 Some of us do our homework regardless ... most of the time ...

Glad your children are coming over tonight. Did I get that right?

I was anxious, but pulled through and did what I planned and was rostered on for. Greetings and music ministry for Good Friday.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

No, my children are with me full time. But I take them out on Fridays for live music and drinks at the coffee house. Last week the place was packed and we had to go out sit in the rain. This week I booked early for a table inside.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

I'm doing an online course on psychology and sociology, @Kyle1. My current semester subject is on intercultural communication, and it discusses inter'culture' as being not just between nations but also between individuals, value systems, interest groups etc. which each have a particular culture, and how we, mostly unconsciously, adapt to each as we go about. I have to do an article review, a presentation and an essay this term. I'm trying to alter my style a little, but it's not easy.

I don't expect to finish the full course, and often think of withdrawing, but when I'm not considering withdrawing, I am enjoying it immensely. It's just that my life is in such turmoil that makes life more than a little bewildering and overwhelming at times (often).

I've also noticed that many of our group are doing one course or another. If I wasn't doing the course, I'd be studying in another form. I love to be constantly learning new things. I think it is because I came to appreciate education when I was no longer part of the system and I have a lot to learn. It's fun.

Live music is wonderful, even tho the shops are closed. @Kyle1

Yes the weather forecast is not great.

I am getting used to different ways different people live out Christian stuff. I guess I was raised with a too serious and harsh interpretation, and learning to give myself permission to live more fully.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

I went along to the children's church service yesterday. It's a Catholic school and it was the first time I saw such ceremony... It's not our usual flavour of Christianity, but interesting never the less...

@Appleblossom

I'm guessing you have Catholic background?

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Yes, @Historylover that does sound interesting. Albeit 'substantial' !

So you'll be coming out at the end as a social worker?..

Re: Socialising for Beginners

No, @Kyle1, this is just for interest sake, to prove to myself that I have more ability than the education system I passed through allowed.
