Socialising for Beginners

Socialising for Beginners

Thanks for the encouragement @Jynx
I put it in the Looking After Ourselves section as I believe the forums social spaces do a good job, of allowing the online community to get together in various social ways. I am more interested in working out or working through real life socialising experiences. Where we do not have the protections offered by anonymous online interactions.
Socialising for grown ups who have been isolated and are trying to re-enter general community groups or just trying to meet people is no easy feat. Its more difficult than for children and puppies as we usually have a lot more baggage, whatever that may mean.
From the online dictionary for a start:
verb: socialise
1.
participate in social activities; mix socially with others.
"guests can socialize in a real holiday atmosphere"
2.
make (someone) behave in a way that is acceptable to their society.
"newcomers are socialized into orthodox ways"
Similar words:
interact
converse
be sociable
mix
mingle
get together
meet
Seems to require more than simple social skills training.
I started one therapeutic relationship with that as my main goal. I knew I had limits and was willing to learn, but she was not a great a teacher and eventually admitted it was not her strength. I have accepted that I am relatively introverted and there are advantages and safety with that, but also the yearning for human connection persists within me. So I do not really want to keep myself to myself. This forum has been a wonderful opportunity for me to try different things and meet people.

Just tagging a few who I feel may be interested, but this discussion is open ...

Hey @Historylover

@Kyle1 Yes raised RC, but today UCA, but tentative ...

Probably why I felt I had to turn over every stone ... searching for answers.

Re psychoanalysis:

In my early studies Freud and Lacan ruled, Jung was slightly off mainstream, then we heard about Janet plus ... last year ... into equity ... the UN and all that ... but not convinced so let it go. Trying out living life without structures of education. Still learning heaps.

@Appleblossom yes. Organic learning. 🙂

So can I ask: what does this day mean to you?..

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Hey yourself, @Appleblossom. How are you?

I've been looking for those elusive answers and understandings too, @Appleblossom. I thought I had found the answers, but recently another realization has overturned everything. I guess we weren't supposed to rest on our laurels. 😕

Re: Socialising for Beginners

@Historylover I am constantly learning and am changing. I am starting to embrace ...

old and silly ... as in trying to treasure any good moments possible. A young man looked at me as I was going to church and then said to reassure me ... that he wanted his wife to look like me ... that was nice and we had a laugh across the road. I was wearing browns.

@Kyle1

For me, I reflected on the push to masochism within my family and how destructive that was. I respect Good Friday as a day of mourning and deep respect for suffering of divine or human quality. There is an aspect of grieving for my own family. I did not feel inclined to go on to the stations of the cross, another event, which others were attending. I responded to a request for volunteer and set up a little musical addition which went well. I have a lot of experience in Holy Week music so it is seems a shame to let it go to waste.

Thanks @Kyle1 @Historylover

Never worn this outfit before, just the combo of old things and new cardi, seemed good enuff for church but not too dull.

Its a pretty simple life, but trying to live it with style and dignity.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

I'm sure they will go into it rather more deeply than we have done to date, @Kyle1. It's still very early days, and we only do one topic per semester. Two would be too much pressure for me at this stage.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Can I ask @Historylover what the topic was this semester?

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Intercultural communication, this semester, @Kyle1. It's showing how culture is more than ethnic groups, and how we adapt our style of communication depending on the person or group with whom we are interacting. Like here, we use one style of communication, and in another situation, we would be more or less forthcoming. It's failing to grab my attention, and when that happens, I just immerse myself in the assessments. It fills the requirements, but I don't know if it will come back to bite me later on. I don't think it will, because, as I've mentioned, I don't expect to complete the course. It is interesting though, and I would not have dreamed, in my earlier life, that I could have attended university. It just goes to show how schooling can be so unsuited to our required learning style. I have found outstanding teachers on YouTube, but so far, in these courses, a number have left me astounded by their inadequacies. Perhaps online courses get the left overs.
