Socialising for Beginners

Socialising for Beginners

Thanks for the encouragement @Jynx
I put it in the Looking After Ourselves section as I believe the forums social spaces do a good job, of allowing the online community to get together in various social ways. I am more interested in working out or working through real life socialising experiences. Where we do not have the protections offered by anonymous online interactions.
Socialising for grown ups who have been isolated and are trying to re-enter general community groups or just trying to meet people is no easy feat. Its more difficult than for children and puppies as we usually have a lot more baggage, whatever that may mean.
From the online dictionary for a start:
verb: socialise
1.
participate in social activities; mix socially with others.
"guests can socialize in a real holiday atmosphere"
2.
make (someone) behave in a way that is acceptable to their society.
"newcomers are socialized into orthodox ways"
Similar words:
interact
converse
be sociable
mix
mingle
get together
meet
Seems to require more than simple social skills training.
I started one therapeutic relationship with that as my main goal. I knew I had limits and was willing to learn, but she was not a great a teacher and eventually admitted it was not her strength. I have accepted that I am relatively introverted and there are advantages and safety with that, but also the yearning for human connection persists within me. So I do not really want to keep myself to myself. This forum has been a wonderful opportunity for me to try different things and meet people.

Just tagging a few who I feel may be interested, but this discussion is open ...

@tonys We will see ...

I did speak direct without diplomacy yesterday in the socialising. Think it is more about position and historically being very powerless and adapting to that, and now have a bit more agency and finally learning to swing my weight around ... a little .... curious how it unfolds.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

@Appleblossom I suspect diplomacy is the art of wielding power with subtlety. Having very little heft and little sense of agency the best I can offer is authenticity tempered with as much compassion as I can muster.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Samsung is infuriating as phone. Software is terrible.

Ok hardware too

Think this will become new 'spare' and get iPhone 6 to 12 depending on cost etc

This is big. Heavy . Needs 2 hands. To hold and to text,.

Its horrible to type on etc. When in email find myself deleting things when just trying to tap on them. Yet it promises to be Even more sensitive.

Not so sure why 'less spastic' is not an option.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

@Dimity Your definition is probably true. My use of the word may be inaccurate. My personality is probably more people pleaser, cos never in positions of power to wield it subtly or not. Though mother used me as little "diplomat" to win over Human Services to try and get her other kids back from 'the welfare'. It was impressed on me from 10 yrs on, and I had trip to Sydney once where I was explicitly prepped for that job. She got 2 more back but not the final one.

Last night, I was sitting at table with "new potential friends". Covered grief as another lady mentioned it first, but moved on as we did not want to lower the mood. Made jokes and was a bit silly. Realised that in my circumstances growing up I had rarely been allowed much air time, as someone was always coming down loud and heavy in my personal space. So very used to being cut off, and shamed to my face, that was the way it was. So had a lovely few conversations without pressure to be anything other than 'getting to know you' in a light hearted fashion. Talked about work and CBD and govt and music.

I have truly been round the block, tho, and could hear an accent, which I teased out and came from similar part of the world at a province level, as my mother, so that was interesting. She loved the guessing game too. Also noting cliques formed, people on the make, and a few walls, instead of genuine people.

Enjoyed a little dancing without having to follow set steps. About 15 women my age and more in a circle .... with twist, and rocknroll ... and free form ...

I guess separating out the roles ... and finally ... not obvious charity child. Can buy me own ticket. Wear half decent clothes .... getting that delicate balance right was a topic of discussion and banter ... among some women, but there were enuff men present. In fact I walked into one bar full of men ... to get glasses for water ... they were all drinking something else ..lol

Re: Socialising for Beginners

I'm so sorry you've so much and so often felt cut off and shamed @Appleblossom . I didn't mean to contradict or correct you. We all come from different corners and I humbly put my own position as a probable neurodivergent... it was painfully acquired over a working lifetime.

Your social forays sound like a huge adventure.
