automatic shutdown or disassociation

automatic shutdown or disassociation

Hi

I dont know if any of you experience this with BPD or maybe its the PTSD that causes it. I find when I'm extremely stressed and someone starts to lecture me or yell at me etc I can feel like my brain shutting down and everthing becomes blah blah blah and I'm not really taking anything in and I just feel numb all over. My partner says I get this glazed look in my eye and its always at moments of high stress and he feels then there is no point talking to me as I wont remember it.

Is this just disassociation and how can you stop it from coming on? I understand its probably the brain's self defence mechanism protecting me from harms way but when I'm trying to move forward and stop these knee jerk reactions its hard. I know the PTSD has something to do with it as it comes from childhood, when ever there is yelling or stress its my instant reaction but I want to stop it - any ideas?

Is this the reason why my memory is bad as well? I can remember the most trivial things from years ago but ask me something about yesterday or last week I will struggle to remember. Everytime my partner and I watch a movie on TV I might say this would be good to watch and he would say but we just watched this weeks ago and you didnt like it and I will have no recollection of this at all. Its happened at work once or twice and even at the doctors.

Re: automatic shutdown or disassociation

No @pip
Sexually abused by 3 different guys at different times during my years of 9-12. Neighbour uncle and brother. My brother was not with the others.
And I was also touched by a creep on a train when I was about 18 but recently told my psych who said to "why didn't you move to another carriage "? I told him I froze I was scared. He really didn't take me seriously. So when I went home I wrote him a note and was angry at him saying "do you know what it's like to be abused and touched? I said you have no right to tell me to "move to another carriage ". When he read the letter he apologised for upsetting me and said he didn't realise I was still fragile". What a stupid thing to say from a psych.
I want to write more but can't I'm starting to lose it again. I'll write more later. I'm 51yrs and all this came out 6 yrs ago.

Re: automatic shutdown or disassociation

Hi @BlueBay. Thank you for sharing. The fact that you've shared that much tells me you accept my friendship and total trust. The power these people had over you enabled them to continue the abuse. They would've used unbelievable scare tactics to control the situation. Your brother sounds a real piece of work, sorry, but I suspect he knew and encouraged this disgust. He may have also told your poor unsuspecting parents you have an amazing imagination, therefore totally discrediting your complaint. This would explain your mothers reaction and comment 'you betrayed the family'. None of what happened is your fault, please believe this. When the person on the train touched you - yes you froze, this is because you again 'felt' the power that you experienced when you were abused earlier. When this abuse is continued and the victim is not protected, the power that they had is removed to the abuser. The person on the train might not have meant any harm, you froze purely from instinct and previous abuse. I'm not defending the passenger on the train, all I'm saying is he would not have been aware of any wrong doing and maybe, to him, was just trying to be friendly. I'm not suggesting for one moment he had the right to touch you, no way, all I'm saying is it could've been accidental. It may have been deliberate, either way it terrified you and that put you back to original abuse that was ignored. Have I been able to help you further. Sexual abuse victims who are ignored, often experience many problems with relationships, due to lack of trust toward the spouse who, when they find out, have absolutely no idea how to handle their wife's distress.

Hi @pip
I forgot to mention something - my parents don't know about my brother. God now I'm scared. What if they find out. At the time my dad had a heart attack and I couldn't tell them for fear of my dad gettjng worse.
Only son they think he is right up there. He has been married quite a few times. Always in trouble at school wagging. So much more. i can't. I haven't told many. I hate him. Maybe my mum saw or knew something. I don't know. His daughter suicided 2 yrs ago at 23. I wonder if. @pip this is so hard. I'm hurting anger crying.
That's why at times I say I want to run away hurt myself. My life is hell. I think I need to ring my psych tomorrow I need to talk to him. Three weeks is too long to wait.

Re: automatic shutdown or disassociation

@BlueBay. Your parents know exactly what your brother has told them. As I mentioned he may have convinced them you have an extremely vivid imagination. When he attacked you, may I ask if he ever threatened you if you 'told' on him. My brother took extreme pleasure in informing me that if dad found out (mum knew, but chose to ignore). As I said I was frequently warned that if I told dad, he would leave, therefore I would've been responsible for their marriage ending. I had similar threats from mum. Don't dwell on too many 'ifs', 'what if's', these will confuse and hurt you. At this point concentrate on re-gaining your power. We will never know the reason for your niece's suicide, again- you will know what your brother chooses to tell about the suicide. It is highly possible your mum knew, but your brother may have been able to convince her the attack on you was a 'one off'. It sounds as though your mum was devotedly blind to everything bad about him. Because he is the only son, mum and dad refuse to hear anything against him. You being the daughter, he's already convinced them to ignore you, telling them you are a trouble-maker, possibly also convinced them you are jealous of their love for him etc. My mum went to her grave believing I harboured jealous resentment of my brother. Talk about love being deaf, dumb, blind and stupid. At this stage your hate is because of the power he had over you, his actions toward you. I was exactly the same, now I know I don't hate him, just who he is and what he did. He, himself is too pathetic to hate. I actually feel nothing toward him, just his actions. I might add here, he is the loneliest person. He 'blows' his friendships by begging money then conveniently forgetting to 'pay back'. He's a drunk, druggie. Life hurt him far worse than any punishment I could dish out. He's also been in jail so often the jail system operate a revolving door.

Re: automatic shutdown or disassociation

Hi @pip @

I don't think my brother has told my parents because my parents don't know. When all this came out 6 yrs ago I hadn't seen my brother for a while. I ended up telling my sister before my mum (and i got into trouble because of that too). But I know that my mum would have told my brother about my memories and he has stayed well away (and glad he did). I know that he knows what he has done; so he will get his punishment when the time comes.

As for my neighbour - I did go to the police to inquire what the process was. I met a really nice detective part of the child abuse section and he explained the whole process. But after speaking with him I felt it would be too traumatic for me and I was not in any frame of mind to go to court. So I left it.

As for my uncle (mum's brother) he passed away the year before my memories came back.

When I first told my mum she was supportive but only for a few weeks. she would call me daily to see how i was feeling. But she never told dad, she used to say 'oh no i won't tell dad because that will upset him' WTF what about me!!!!

All of a sudden she twisted and changed to be a dragon, manipulative bitch and was so cold towards me. This is where maybe she told my brother and he has said "oh she is not right in the head, she is suffering depression, she doesn't know what she is saying" - and of course she would have listened to him. Then she called me and demanded that I go to her house to 'talk about it". I was so scared, i didn't want to go i remember being so upset that my close friend came over to calm me down. i even called my psychiatrist and left a message to say pls admit me into hosptial, i can't go to her house.

But that day came, my husband came with me. on our way my psych called me and reassured me it was okay, and made sure what i was going to say to her. he printed off some information about child abuse and depression and i was going to give it to them.

We got to my parent's house. I press the door bell and she answers with a cold hard bitch look on her face, no smile, no hug. I kissed her hello but it was so cold. We walked into the kitchen and i looked around for dad. i said to her 'where is dad' and her reply was 'oh he doesn't want to be herre to see you or hear what you have to say' (sorry i am crying now) . i knew that was a lie because my dad had a heart attack a few weeks before and was not allowed to drive yet, so whether she told him to go into the shed and stay there, or i really don't know what happened to him that day. we sat down and she started, the abuse, the verbal yelling 'how dare you wait over 30 yrs to tell me about the abuse' ; how dare you go to your sister first and tell her; and then she looks at my husband and says 'and you are not a proper husband because if you were you would have come to tell me first". i was sitting there like a little lost girl sobbing and sobbing i kept saying to her 'pls let me talk' and she wouldn't. i said i have some information and a letter i want to read to you - she said "ii am not interested in your lettert'

with that I got up, grabbed my bag and my hsuband and i walked out. my husband turned around and said 'i hope she doesn't end up in hospital because of this'. my mum turns around and says 'oh well you live your life and we'll live ours".

I got in the car and i was hysterical, sobbing and sobbing so much. i couldn't believe how my mum, my own blood could do this to me.

I phoned my psych and he was shocked to hear what had happened. he spoke to my husband and told him to watch me over the weekend. I came home, took some sleeping tablets and went to sleep.

To this day I will never ever forget how she treated me.

All i ever wanted was a hug, a motherly hug for her to say it's okay you'll be okay but it didn't happen.

so that is part of my story; oh there is more but for now this is too much for me. so i have to stop. tears are rolling god i am so angry i wish i could self harm just to get back at her, show her the scars show her how bad she has been to me

@BlueBay

I know how much hate you must have, once I confronted my father at a family bbq. He was actually harassing my sisters friend and getting verbally abusive, it had nothing to do with me but no one was going to her aid so I did. Thankfully my partner was there, I have never been violent in all my life but I wanted to punch the hell out of my father and if it wasnt for my partner physically holding me back I could have easily landed him in hospital as he was so drunk. I'm very ashamed of that as to me it showed "he got to me" and even though I lashed out with 20+ years of hate I still dont liek that I had that in me. Sometimes I think that I would like to confront my mother and rest of the family for how they have made me feel but I'm scared from the point of view I always revert to a child like state with them (let them tell me what to do with no respect for my own feelings) and I dont want to do that and prove that they still have a hold on me. Just the thought gets my anxiety up. I find it hard to even drive past their homes without getting anxious - its crazy isnt it the hold they put on us.

@BlueBay please know you are not alone!

I hope you are feeling better today.
