Welcome and getting started

Trying makes it worse

Trying makes it worse

Hi,

I'm EternalFlower and I've been feeling completely overwhelmed, sad, and pessimistic.

I've tried and been a responsible patient and person, reaching out to various services when I started feeling scarily anxious and suicidal, 2 years back..

My Dr is new, a young guy who regularly admits he's inexperienced, and aside from some good jokes, he actually does very little

I notice how easy it is to blame myself that I don't feel better, a total shame spiral, but I wander if my treatments just are bad....

I wanted to chat and hear anyone and hope I can use this space to help not feel so alone.

Thanks xxx EternalFlower

Hello @Oaktree @PeppyPatti @Appleblossom @Appleblossom @LeChuck @Sophia1 @LeChuck @Gemma13

Thanks Tyme, please don't use positive language around me regarding that crisesI had, it was not accurate regarding my treatments, and i found it dismissive.

One thing I learned about therapy was that in the end, it is about my showing up for myself, regularly and with genuine desire to do and be the best person I could/can. (I still am “in therapy “.) That is what I get from you. So that is a giant plus regardless of anything that happens in the therapeutic relationship. TR … therapeutic relationship is a thing… some of the stuff in it is our/ the client’s to process. Well we are left to process it whether we like it or not… but I have learned that it is not all about us. The therapist’s stuff also gets mixed up in our TR. Some are better than others at dealing with it or being transparent about it.

Figuring out what we honestly have to work through is our own personal growth and teaches us about patterns in our attachment styles and themes we need to face.

I was terribly obsessed with a psychiatrist I saw in the late 1980s. I thought he was amazing and was totally impressed by his positions and persona. He had been head of a mental institution, had a Royal Commission into him and lectured in psychiatry at a university. It took years and decades for me to get over him. I am glad to say I haven’t even thought of him for years now. I placed all my locus of control in his hands and so wished he would save me. He really did very little good for me , but we are encouraged to open ourselves and be vulnerable… so the impact of the relationship is uneven possibly one sided. I am still open and trusting and hardworking but I am no longer giving therapists so much power.

good to have your thoughtful posts.

When I read your post yesterday I wanted to respond but I didn’t have time. Now I am back.

I am guilty of giving therapists too much power and just accepting everything they said was true. Now I am more likely to think about what they say and then try to decide for myself whether or not it is true for me. I didn’t manage to come to this on my own. My best friend pointed it out to me and I agreed with her that I was looking up to my therapist too much. Anyway I just wanted to say that I relate.

@Oaktree definitely agree that therapists should earn power and not be simply meted it out

i think it's really difficult the push for people to use specific approaches or help-seeking methods to get well.... therapy is seen as the way to cope in distress but for me it just added more confusion.

I am more confused than ever after seeking programs i was pushed into against my will. I hope i find myself again -therapy took something away from me.

I continue to help seek but it's just not the same.

Good to see you around a little.

Hearing you about the confusing nature of mental health field and all the latest fashion specific approaches. In some ways it can provide variety and choice but sometimes practitioners just narrow their focus and forget the broader nature of being human.

It's not good you were pushed into any. Coercion can be a big problem in the MH field in many ways.

I do hope you find your own path to well being. I so love your name... Eternal Flower.

Great to see you all.

Re: Trying makes it worse

hi @Appleblossom i do everything i can to avoid coercion

Sometimes things are presented as a choice but come with so many rules and demands and so little information and discussion that, the choice isn't free at all

I attend case management sessions but am potentially over that as well. I have a therapist and a small circle of friends. Once I started the NDIS i had a bunch of unskilled wokers around so have had to reign that in extremely.
I use it now for OT, which I find helpful, so it doesn't have some benefits. The rules have got a lot stricter, which is a good thing, but confusing

Re: Trying makes it worse

@EternalFlower I am glad you have some support. OT can be great if the person has an interest in mental health. Sounds like yours is good. NDIS is confusing. Learning how to make the most of it tricky, cos, yes some unskilled workers seem to want to boss and don't really understand.

Take care

Re: Trying makes it worse

@Appleblossom the NDIS has been in the news a lot lately - particularly with accom rorts - (SIL?)

i see negative articles pop up and then a slew of positive ones.

The negative stuff needs to be heard - i'm so sick of the dodgy providers.
