A Friend in Need,,,,

A Friend in Need,,,,

I closed my poetry thread, no more poetry here.
I wasn't going to post either, but I feel the need to express this somehow or die a tiny bit more inside.
I'm guessing both will happen, regardless.

Today I lost a friend. Not to death but to human nature.
Or rather, as the quote goes:

"I didn't lose a friend. I just realised I never had one"

To me this is worse. Sadly I judge others by my own standards, and I give loyalty and honesty and trust beyond what is sensible.
Even less sensible, is the expectation that it will be returned in like.

In recent years I have come to realise that to .... every single friend really, I am not a friend, I am a convenience.
They only talk to me etc when they are bored and all their 'real friends' are busy.
They only respond to my messages or requests for help ( eg. Assistance moving house), in a similar way. As long as it doesn't inconvenience them or cost them anything.

This is how the world works. I know that.
People prioritise, and I rank low, if at all, on their list.
And that would be fine. Except for the fact that I have always dropped everything I'm doing to help each and every one of them.
I have given friends my last dollar and gone hungry.
I do these things repeatly, and almost always to my own detriment or inconvenience.

I recently failed a house inspection because I was busy working dawn till dusk helping a friend (of over ten years), prepare for theirs.
Their reaction when they found out? They abused me, said I was stupid, and a freak. That nobody does that. They said a lot worse before they terminated our friendship forever.
Because I helped them, instead of helping myself.
Without expectation of reward or returned favour beyond what standard friendship brings.

But I do do that. I will always do that, and I don't apologise for it.

I suppose it's foolish of me to think these things make our friendship stronger, that I might get what I give if I am ever in need. I guess I live In Wonderland after all.

But I feel sad that people often recognise that, and take advantage.
I thought this friend was different, but the truth always come out in the end.

As Friedrich Nietzsche said :

"I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on, I can't believe you."

In a way, I lost multiple friends. The friend I thought I had, the friend I could have had, and the friend I will never have.

It always surprises me that no matter how completely empty I feel inside and think I am, someone manages to find something new to tear out.

And people wonder why I prefer to be alone.

@TAB

See what I mean..

If you think I seem like someone who walks away, you haven't been paying attention...

@Former-Member. I don't view you as an ungrateful bitch, I view you as a self-hating person which is really sad. Can I ask you what you require from these forums? You would probably throw your keyboard at me if I suggested anything at all. You're angry, real angry I get that. Angry with yourself, get that too, why are you so angry with you? Why do you feel the universe doesn't care? You've been wronged, we all have. You've been hurt, used, who hasn't? I'm not trying to be condescending or put you down in any way. I feel a lot of empathy (not sympathy). What really evil, nasty, despicable thing did you do that makes you despise yourself so much? Okay, you defended yourself, we all have that right, you stepped on some toes, we all do. That doesn't make you hateful, evil, nasty, it makes you, you. You tried to help others, good for you. You say you want people to LISTEN, okay, I'm listening. What are you actually saying. Don't beat around the bush, you hate you, fine, my question is 'why?' What did you do that causes you to self hate so much. What makes you worse than some politicians who promise everything, but give nothing. I'm not telling you how to feel, what to say. I'm ASKING you why you hate you? simple question, simple answer.

Hi all,

I’m sorry if anyone perceives the communication from the moderation team as ‘threatening’. This is not our intention. Rather our goal is to ensure that interactions among members remain constructive and respectful, and that the Forums remain a safe and welcoming space for all to participate in.

I can see that emotions are running high this morning, but I can also see amongst everyone’s posts there is the intention to help and support one another. So I’m hoping we can bring the conversation in this thread back to the original topic of friendship.

I am interested to hear more about what people think about those experiences in life when we realise someone who we thought was a true friend actually never was. @Appleblossom made a great point yesterday about the importance of boundaries. @Anony18 gave some great encouragement to @utopia around having the capacity to be there for others without the need for reward. I wonder… how can we strike a balance between the two – being there for others selflessly, while still respecting our own boundaries? Look forward to hearing everyones thoughts 🙂

Mosaic.

Not at all. Moderators have a tricky job that often involves judgement calls based on text conversations, which fail to accurately convey sarcasm, hostility or joking around.

They also have to read pretty much every single person's troubles and posts.

I have been on unmoderated forums, and they were just hostile and out of control.

People may feel chastised when messaged by Moderators, but I'm pretty sure they don't just do it for the fun of messing with you.

I appreciate being pulled up, because it makes me aware how stupid I'm being, and for that, and their unseen efforts, I thank you,Moderators, and hope you know that I appreciate what you do.

No, I'm not kissing ass, I've experienced the with and without, and I know for a fact they play an important role.

So to anyone who gets pulled up, look at it from the perspective that they are helping you not be a d|ck.

@Former-Member. I think when friendships break up, it can be as devastating as a romantic relationship ending. It's the trust factor or lack of trust & respect.
Over the years I have ceased friendships, dueto not ggetting anything from them. I don't mean I do you a favour and you do me one. Respect is a big issue for me. I don't need my friends to agree with me on all issues;, but I do expect them to respect me enough to listen. Other friendships have ended due to a class of values - my belief that all people have a right to be treated as equals. I can't stand racism or bigotry.
Some people I have not mourned the loss of. Others I have.

Re: A Friend in Need,,,,

Hi @Former-Member

As @utopia mentioned, losing a trust of someone you thought was a true friend particularly one that was really close is hard. To me initially it was harder than a relationship break-up because this is the person whom you trust to be there for you if you ever broke up with a partner. And when it happens over and over again, it is hard to lose that trust in people.

It has happened to me before and I question I done all of this for you but now when I need you - you have ditched me. It builds up resentment. But after taking a step back - I thought about it we are all different people with different personalities. I help people out not expecting a reward cause that is what makes me happy. I do it to the extent that 1) I know helping this person out will bring a smile to my face; and 2) I have the time to do it because I cannot neglect my family and I also need to have some activities for myself, such as meeting work deadlines and my hobbies such as dance.

In terms of the right balance it is no different to being a carer for the MI, we do it cause we choose to but also need to ensure there are time for ourselves and looking after our own wellbeing.

Hope that makes sense.

Well said @Anony18. Yes I also help out because it brings me joy. But my mental health and my son are always my first priority.
