CBT does anyone get this?

CBT does anyone get this?

Just started my first CBT with my psychologist today. I learnt a little about it when I was on hospital. Logically it makes sense. No problem there. The problem lies in the fact that I'm not aware I'm doing this 'cognitive distortion', when I'm doing it.
How have others learnt to use this therapy? How or when fo you catch yourself doing it?
I really want to master this.
Thanks in advance.

Hi @utopia. I know that one day I'll have to do CBT although I know it is also incorporated into other therapies like DBT and ACT. I guess many therapies look at how to change the way you think about things and changing your behaviours. For me it has been suggested not to do CBT yet until I'm more able to process things without creating a shame whirlpool. Anyway my point @utopia is actually that I think you'll be great at doing this. You are focussed and practical and I'm sure you'll master it. I also understand your point about not realising what thoughts we are having until after the moment of change has passed. I do believe that as long as your not too hard on yourself it will come. Believe in yourself, you've had a such a successful journey to get you to this point in such a short time so far. I hope you are ok. Take care 😊💜

I'm sorry @utopia, unintentional leading off topic. I believe it's a great question.😊 I might refrain for a while. I've my own pressures at the moment & I sure feel unhappy to have upset another. It's very much a journey for each of us. I like to understand others, & often find solace in relating to others. I think this is a good calling for me to 'refrain'. I'm a little overwhelmed. I tend to take others problems on & then loose myself to exhaustion. Once again my appologies.

@Former-Member. Sorry didn't mean to be so rude. Talking / texting before thinking. I was already irritated when I left the psychologists bec I didn't understand how to do this therapy. Always touchy after therapy. But I don't want you feeling shit, because I was having a shit moment.
Thanks @NikNik. I'll look up that Tuesday Topic. It makes sense what you say. Practice makes perfect. I'm just getting a bit impatientfor 'this' to all be over.
@Former-Member. You made a good point. It can work if I'm not too hard on myself. I need to slow down. Do what I tell others. One step at a time. Bugger - was hoping for a miracle cure - lol.
Thank you all

I do the same thing @utopia. Think Rome can be built in a day or a least there's a magic wand to build Rome in a day. Steady as she goes and you'll be fine. It's funny how sometimes we just have to follow the advice we give to others. I get caught out by this a bit and realise. I think that it's actually healthy for both of us to do though. Chin up, take care 😊💜

nice apology too💜 I didn't think you meant that and just saw your frustration. We are all human. Don't be hard on youreself re this either.

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

Thank you @NikNik @ shimmet. I just read through the Tuesday topic on CBT. It made sense. A lot easier to follow than what I eas hearing from my psychologist.
I think I will go through my day (at night) & see what thoughts come up. Then write down the more likely truth. I can do that.

@Former-Member. Am aware how triggers can lead to a bad day & I don't want to be purposely responsible for bringing the trigger on , or upsetting the m

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

Heyy,

I have heaps of cognitive distortion 🙂

If you want to spot this, you may check your beliefs and do the 'reality check'. For example, a depressed person may have the cognitive disturbance of thinking like... 'I'm too fat, I'm ugly, I'm useless, nobody loves me'. The person may not know he's thinking it, but after getting dressed and seeing the reflection in the mirror, immediately goes to the fridge. It is distorted, because all negative and self destructive. Ugly? Who said that? Who is the judge? Point is, distortion is not 'reality'. It can happen both ways. Sometimes my distortion is, that I can do anything in one day... It's like something made up in your head. Everyone has a different reality, but if it breaks you down into anxiety, panic or others, it is not very 'helpful'. So I would say, if you want to catch yourself, you have to learn to monitor your thoughts. This may take a while. I don't know you, but if you're having problems with anxiety for example, you'd check during your next attack, or before or after.. 'what was I thinking?? Maybe too many people.. then whey are you afraid of that? Maybe a smell, sound.. whatever it is. Some stimulus gets into your brain and is encoded in the wrong way. You have to retrain your brain and say .. hey, I know we freaked out because of this before, but actually it's not that bad.. You can meditate on that. Before you go to bed. If noise freaks you out.. say well, it's gonna be noisy tomorrow one way or another, and that's fine. I can keep calm and mind me business... or like with spiders.. They don't really do anything, but still they make half the population jump 🙂 You can retrain your self into .. 'Hey, I know I've been afraid of you all my life, but really, you don't do anything.. Having unexplained fear does not really help me.. You're just an animal, really.. Just walk over my hand haha Something like that.. You just have to figure out your thoughts. Like me going over my belly and thinking... aaah, I feel unattractive and fat and ugly.. it's just for a second or so. . but it Is distorted.. There are heaps of bigger women than me who are happy and in a relationship.. It's my own distortion that gives me a hard time.. hope that helps 😄

That makes a lot of sense @traveline. Thank you. More good stuff for me to think on.
