CBT does anyone get this?
How have others learnt to use this therapy? How or when fo you catch yourself doing it?
I really want to master this.
Thanks in advance.

ask the person you see maybe @Former-Member its nearly 20 yrs since I did it. I wouldn't worry about the theory too much maybe. its all about tricking the brain to stop it playing tricks on you, that can make you feel bad.

yeah, @Former-Member I wouldn't credit it as either a 'science' or a 'profession'. I have a problem with 'ologies' social sciences etc ..
still, whatever works. it can work.

Hi @utopia
I'm sorry to see your discussion go off topic.
Your question is such a good one - especially because CBT is one of the most common therapies.
One of our most popular Topic Tuesdays was about CBT 'Managing and changing your thoughts' which featured one of our wonderful mods @Shimmer. She also wrote this blog about it too.
In my experience, CBT works with a lot of practice - and the longer you do it, the better you are at picking things up. At first, often you notice things on reflection. You have a crappy day, and perhaps that night or the next morning, you can look back and see how your thoughts may have escalated the situation or at what points your thoughts got really negative. Then slowly, your 'reaction time' between the unhelpful thought and noticing that thought, gets shorter and shorter. If that makes sense?
It also works well with mindfulness - which I know you joined a discussion about with @Queenie. Mindfulness helps make you present and not caught up in your thoughts - which I find helps notice the unhelpful thoughts quicker.
I think it's awesome that you're so dedicated to this and I'd love to continue to hear about your experiences and other members' experiences
