CBT does anyone get this?

CBT does anyone get this?

Just started my first CBT with my psychologist today. I learnt a little about it when I was on hospital. Logically it makes sense. No problem there. The problem lies in the fact that I'm not aware I'm doing this 'cognitive distortion', when I'm doing it.
How have others learnt to use this therapy? How or when fo you catch yourself doing it?
I really want to master this.
Thanks in advance.

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

😁 ha,ha..I've wondered same thing @utopia. My psychologist uses this method. I used it with someone else before & found it unhelpful. It just caused me to pick fault with my partner. I expect it depends who's doing it too. This psyche has a different click with me...to be honest it just feels like I talk about stuff that comes up for me. She makes me feel I'm never wrong, my feelings are valid..if anything I get a sense she invites me to realize 'who I am'...I don't know what my diagnosis is, in a wy I'm scared to ask! Other than what I vaguely can pi k ,given my experience of DV...hmm sorry @utopia I font feel helpful! 🙈

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

Hi @utopia .. it got me going years ago. usually works best in combination with counselling etc.

it was good to go to a group and talk with people in same boat, act out scenarios etc, we pretended we were cutting someone's hair as that was someone's 'thing' it was fun, well after fear lol

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

I thought it was a form of counseling @TAB? Do you think it's a model of thought to attack one's fear?

@Former-Memberpretty much, that or its first cousin does 'exposure' I think it was a while ago so dont quote me on it.

I went to a group run by someone who was doing research

there is a list of 'wrong' thinking prob on here or all over the internet, magnifying thoughts etc, then addressing perceptions vs reality

this is seriously dumbed down version.

@Former-Member in other words I'm too lazy to look it up for you I have come across it before, and at least once got good results, even if I later let it slip.Sometimes I do the 'cheats' way and just ask myself what someone else would do in same situation

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

Lol @TAB, so I'm doing the 'simple' therapy?!! From what I'm picking up here, is that you mean it's a much more diluted version of addressing perception vs reality? I e. How our perception when in 'wrong' thinking mode creates distorted reality that we live on a daily basis, in turn feeding MI? I think it becomes interesting because who says what is normal or 'right' thinking?

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

Ha, @TAB!! I hear you. However doing your own questions may be your 'ego' feeding the therapeutic approach?!! But then again if you can't challenge yourself, what's the point of having 'ego' to challenge oneself. It leads me in riddles to be honest! 😊

hmm @Former-Member thoughts that make you feel bad about simple things are probably not good??

I'm quite happy to have my own modes of thinking if I have food shelter comfort stablity peace possessions even. Its whatever works .. for you ..

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

@Former-Memberthere is structure ie a framework re sorting it out. not sure where the 'your own questions' thing is from

you probably know more about it than me

Re: CBT does anyone get this?

Not sure I do, but it makes sense what you say @TAB...I think everyone has their own coping style in turn 'thinking mode'..I guess I meant sometimes others have a different 'take' hence different questions get asked...that perhaps we wouldn't ask ourselves? I think a therapist has to get to know someone in order to ask the right questions to help the person see what presently evades them. It has to be a self awakening though, or else it's forgotten because it means nothing.
