Burn out

Burn out

Good afternoon,

I am so happy to be here with people who can understand. I have had anxiety disorder and depression for 29 years and the first I was aware that something was wrong was the day of my first panic attack which led to Agorophobia within two weeks. I was working at the time and was unable to work for 18 months. I managed to return to a new job and worked for many years however I have never been able to live a normal life. I am on medication and have regular therapy, exercise regularly and try to eat a balanced healthy diet. Sixteen months ago I had a breakdown due to work pressures, ended up in hospital for a month and have not been able to work since. I have just been diagnosed with Burn out and was told that I may never get any better and would have to manage my mental illness. I am really struggling and feel completely worthless, most days I don't want to live, I feel as though I am just existing. I live alone and my adult daughters live a long distance from me. I would greatly appreciate any knowledge or assistance you can offer.

Thank you

Us Saggies are sensitive types lol ...and being ruled by Jupiter - I wonder what @Jupiter thinks of that

Haha @Zoe7 🙂 I'm a scorpio, not too sure what that means...

Re: Burn out

Hi @Zoe7 @sadpisces @Bezak482

I went back to the beginning of this thread - and Sadpisces - I really do understand burn-out - and the sad predictions people can give us when such a thing happens

But no one can predict the future - and it makes it all harder when people - even professional people - tell us we may never work again when work can be a very defining life-process for us

I burned-out when my son was 7 - he was a very unhappy child and there is not need to go into that now - but he all came to a head one morning when my husband was supposed to be going to work away from home for a week - he did so every second week - and it was all too much and I fell in an almighty heap and couldn't go on and did end up in a private psyche clinic that day.

The psychiatrist was okay - she didn't predict anything - but my friends and family couldn't keep out of it - I was doing my first HSC subject that year and I was told it was all too much and to give it up - by just about everyone I knew and for a while I despaired.

I am amazed now that people didn't think my husband working away from home so much and I was left with the children - one of whom was so difficult to manage. But I did continue studying and people continued criticizing. I finished my HSC and went onto study for a university degree part-time and eventually graduated with Honours and so I say to you

If you take your time you can do whatever you chose - it's not up to someone else to declare what you can and can't manage - whatever made you burn-out is part of the problem - and it has to be more than work - maybe it's the work you are doing or the people you work with - maybe it's something entirely different - it may take time for you to sort it out

The people that were nay-sayers at the time when I burned out are all gone from my life now and I know that I worked and studied and ran my home and the story of my life is enhanced by what I did

And I sincerely wish the same for you - taking small steps - starting off part-time - listening to your body and your thoughts and doing what you feel is right for you

I think I read that you are doing something at TAFE - that is really good - and I wish you the best - in this world you are the only person you have to please in spite of what other people insist - it's your life after all and you are the only one who knows all the ins and outs of it

All the best Sadpicses - this is a tough time for you now but life will change

haha @Jupiter Not sure what that means either but I had a giggle at Saggies 'being ruled by Jupiter' - maybe you being a water sign can put out the fire of Saggies

@Jupiter @Zoe7

The sign of scorpio is ruled by Pluto in the new money; Mars in the old coin. Just in case you find yourself in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire chair....and there's a trick question.

@sadpisces I wonder if you are doing a TAFE course because you are already with an employment services provider and studying is one option of meeting your requirements and lessening the work the case manager has to do for you. Not a lot of choices with the TAFE courses on offer that are subsidised and you can feel obliged to take up the study when presented with the other option: applying for 10-30 jobs per month in a marketplace that is ageist. Lot of external factors here - retirement age is now 67, when we grew up it was 60. Who moved the goal posts...

Re: Burn out

No chance of me being in the Who Wants to be a Millionaire chair @Jo-anneJoy - there would be too many people for me and I would freeze being on the spot with questions firing at me ...that is my definition of anxious

Hey @sadpisces How are you today?

Re: Burn out

Hi @Zoe7 I hope you've had a great day.

I completely agree with your comments on Who wants to be a Millionaire!

I've not had a great day, I've been trying to do my Tafe work without assistance and it's taken me hours and a lot of anxiety.

On a positive note I did get out for a walk with a friend. I am agorophobic and find walking alone makes me very anxious.

Re: Burn out

Hi @Jupiter thank you for your message. I'm actually on Workcover and doing the Tafe course to try and update my skills and occupy my days.

Funny you should mention Job Service Providers as my job was an Employment Advisor who did put people into Tafe courses. This is the position where I had my breakdown after 10 years of pressure and unrealisitic targets and KPI's. It is such a high pressured industry most people don't stay in the role long term. I only wish I had been able to secure another position however my age is aginst me.
