Can I please share what's going on with my husband - (possible BPD)

Can I please share what's going on with my husband - (possible BPD)

So thanks to Mazarita for encouraging me to come to this side of the forums.

I know diagnoses cannot be made here but I wanted to share what has been going for my husband. He separated from me 7 weeks ago, quite unexpectedly. He told me to check the washing outside and when I came back he had gone!! I phoned him and he told me he couldn't do marriage anymore and wanted to be selfish and fulfill his dreams. He is the world's least selfish person. We have had a lot of grief and loss in our lives (my mum passed away October 2015) . Long story short, he has started a new life with possibly planning in March 2016 without me knowing. He is a rather "excitable person" who took up art in 2003 and he is brilliant artist. He is always a dreamer with big plans, plenty of energy, eats fast, talks fast, walks fast....and doesn't need a lot of sleep! Everything I am not!! Sometimes starts projects and doesn't finish them and sometimes goes into big plan that don't do so well. Has had some minor depression(nothing serious) Had a great job and is a terrific worker. Works at one hundred miles an hour.

Put on a lot of weight(possibly due to overeating) but started exercising like crazy this year. He was running excessively and weighing himself constantly. Concrned about appearance as well and bald spot(shaved his head) I guess typical MID LIFE crisis stuff. But one morning woke early to run and saw something happening in our street and phoned crimestoppers thinking neighbours had been murdered..

IN March he went on dating site(has not told me but I found it in on computer) and met a lady in another country. Went to meet up with her in April(It was my birthday). Stayed overseas for five days. Came back(he is currently living with his mum who has some major mental health issues).

Quit his long-standing job, took out lots of loans/credit cards, gambling again, and has gone to Japan in hope of starting a new life. Told me I had been a good wife and he gave me a rating of 97percent.

Doesn't seem to have any concept or understanding of what i am going through and an expectancy for me to accept all of this (with ease). Became irritable over last few weeks. WE had a good marriage, we are good friends..of course, we have the ups and downa like others have. He always wanted to travel and I was apprehensive about flying. So it looks like he has had to find someone else in another country. He has been applying for any type of job online (in Japan) and gets desperate and frustrated when they don't accept him because he can't speak Japanese or have any type of visa yet. He replies to their rejections with a photograph of himself or his new partner.

He sent emails to family members and people at work to tell them he has a new partner. when people looked up to him and our marriage of nearly 18 years. We were always respected.

Shaved his head, grew a beard as well. i also noticed he was receiving photos from a girl he worked with. I have not seen this side of my husband before. He isn't particularly flirty but when I had the garage sales for my mum, he was interested in talking with some of the young women and i caught him trying to sell my mum's house to some people. Very jumpy and agitated at the time.

Never ever dreamed he would do something so spontaneous and erratic...although I know people going through mid-life crisis can do things like this

He told me he was going to Japan to paint but didn't mention the girl. He said he had picked two countries - it was either France or Japan and looked like Japan won as he said it was too dangerous to go to France.

It appears that he does plan a lot and thinks about things intensely..and often obsessional.

His mum had many many relationships in her lifetime so maybe this is a learnt thing.

We are both christians and we hold to our marriage vows but it seems like these are not imporant now. My husband blames me for a lot of things that have caused him to do this.

He did this last year..he told me he was going to work, kissed me goodbye but he was on holidays and driving to another town. He sent me a series of text messages and emails with instructions in what I had to do. He went through a lot of money but came back when I persuaded him to do so.

This may be just a man wanting to start a new life, but it seems he doesnt have any care for the home we have put together, his garden, his vegetables and his

@Grace01, I would just add to @Faith-and-Hope's wonderful message that I think it's important that you speak to your doctor if you feel you are falling into depression. I would suggest scheduling an appointment to see them soon. Also, I wonder how often you see your counsellor. That may need to be increased at this time. Wishing you well.

Re: Can I please share what's going on with my husband - (possible BPD)

Good morning @Grace01

I was concerned this is what would happen - I wish I could be there for you to hold your hand but I extend both arms with a warm cyber hug.

How you are feeling now given your circumstances is normal @Grace01 - you are experiencing and entering into "grief". And it's a extremely painful process. Allow yourself to express it without reservation (don't hold it in) and keep reaching out for support in all areas.

You have experienced a huge loss/abandonment/trauma my friend with the added hurt and pain of how it was done; and no, you can't just shake that off. I am surprised by the attitude of your church friends. Yes, we need to accept the situation as we can't change or control someone else's free will/choices, but we also need love and support at these painful times in order to move on and not go down too far. You need friends around you. Know you have them here and that you are not alone.

I am glad you are expressing yours needs for help in the home and here. I do understand more than you know the pain of being alone in these times - that feeling of being lost and the days are long. Not wanting or being able to get out of bed, having no motivation, no light, no purpose - the soul/spirit being oppressed by hurts, trauma, fear and grief. It's a dark place. But it does get better - hold onto this hope. We will support you through this every step of the way.

Although all grieve at their own pace if grief lasts for too long depression can develop. That's why it's so important for you Grace to look after your own needs now seeking help for yourself. Focus on your healing and well being.

I am not sure what church you attend but is their a pastor/priest that you can contact for help? Expressing to them that you need support in the home right now? Also it may help you to seek out face to face support groups (you can google this or ring around) - expressing to them what you are going through and your needs at this time and either they can help or will suggest a group that can. Some local community centres (I work for one) can offer counselling free of charge and community support - maybe worth investigating.

Also speaking to a caring GP who may be able "to refer you to a grief/trauma counsellor" or one who specialises in grief/trauma (may have a better understanding of what you are going through). If you believe this may help, you can request a referral. Keep looking for help my friend and God will help guide you and bring the right people to you in your personal life as you are helping yourself. Keep the faith. Don't give up trying. Do you have family members you can call on?

I also suffer from the autoimmune thyroid disorder "Hashimotto". Have you had your thyroid levels checked recently? The disorder can worsen under stress but if your blood levels are correct this should be controlled satisfactorily. The worry, stress, hurt and grief can be the most draining and is what is more than likely making you feel very tired at the moment. You need emotional support my friend - keep posting here as much as you need to. I wish I could do more.

Hold onto hope my friend - it is hard but gradually it will get better. In the meantime keep looking after you and your needs, allow yourself to grieve - keep reaching out and good people will come to you and help. One day at a time. Sending lots of love 💐❤️

Hi @Grace01 🌷

How are you travelling ?

Have you managed to see your GP and ask about treatment for depression ?

My son has just been put on a short course of medication yesterday to help him get back onto his feet, and I am so relieved to see the difference in him already.

Ask for the help you need. You have been so strong, but even the strong need support. Sometimes people see you as so capable, they don't ask, so you have to ask.

Keep reaching out. You can do this.

❤️

Re: Can I please share what's going on with my husband - (possible BPD)

Thank you so much Overtheedge for checking in on me and others who are concerned.

I had some counselling yesterday but it was terribly painful and inappropriate. The counseller pretty much said it was my fault for my husband leaving me for a younger woman. And she didn't respect my Christian views. She said that we were not suitable or compatabile for marriage. We were married 18 years and knew each other 20 years. i was insulted and intend on reporting her.

She didn't show much empathy. I left feeling appalled and hurt.

I have since heard from my husband, He sent me a photo of his latest painting "Mt Fuji".

I asked him if he had a television or radio in his apartment and he said, 'no, he didn't need it as he has his creativity".

I have made mention about "State of Origin"but he has no desire to follow it anymore. That is SO out of character for him. He has been a "crazy" avid League follower since the age of 5.

I am doing ok, considering.

I have a friend coming to visit tomorrow (who is also a good friend of my husbands). So that should be good.

Thanks for your support - it's very much appreciated.

Oh @Grace01 that is appalling !!

😳😧:face_with_rolling_eyes:😟😠😡 ❗️

And you are taking it in your stride ...

Maybe you were the one to see her because someone needs to report her, and you're the girl for the job !

Wow ! Shame about the fact that you went to see her for support !!!

I hope when you are ready you will try again, and find someone truly caring and supportive.

In the meantime, good friends, copious cups of tea, flowers virtual hugs from online friends are worth a mint.

Hi @Grace01,

I second @Faith-and-Hope's sentiments about how awful it was that the counsellor spoke to you like that. I am not a Christian myself but respect the faith of others. It would seem the least a counsellor could do would be to respect the value systems of the client they are seeing. My understanding of counsellors is that they sometimes do challenge us and our assumptions but this needs to be done in a caring, genuinely helpful way. Perhaps your GP may be able to suggest a psychologist you could see on a 'Mental Health Care Plan'. All Australians are entitled to 6-10 sessions with a psychologist per year on one of these plans and they are partly or wholly subsidised by Medicare. I am currently seeing a psychologist on one of these plans and I am finding it helpful for my current issues. Glad to see that you are continuing to post here and receive the support available from us.

Re: Can I please share what's going on with my husband - (possible BPD)

One other thought, @Grace01... perhaps it may be more suitable for you to specifically find a grief counsellor or psychologist who specialises in this. They may be able to help you more in your current situation and with the vulnerability you may be feeling at this time. I have the idea they may be a lot gentler in approach than the bad counsellor you saw yesterday. Just a thought. Always feel free to take or leave any ideas offered here, of course.

Re: Can I please share what's going on with my husband - (possible BPD)

Hi @Grace01,
apologies for coming in late, only just found this thread. Glad you're here, and so sorry your counsellor blamed you, she is hopeless at counselling - keep looking & praying for the right one. I found Psychologists best but Christian ones are hard to find.

Sorry to hear you are suffering at the hands of someone who is supposed to love you, after 18yrs (a lifetime). And losing your mum only 6months back as well. It all adds up on the stress scale.

Your hubby seems so lost. It does sound like typical MID LIFE crisis stuff, but extreme, like something else is going on. He "Lacks empathy, gets irrational, jumpy, agitated, lies, becomes obsessional", His lost interest in things that were important to him - you, sports, his christian value system... He's not taking responsibility, is blaming, deceptive, controlling. .. You sure here's no substance abuse?

You still sound extremely patient & caring toward him. I think the compounding anger would make me so irrational. You're doing really well. Remember, "forgiveness does not equate reconciliation"

I could not live with a partner that cheats & lies...
I agree that A relationship that lacks honesty & trust is not a healthy relationship & will eat away at your self esteem & mess with your head.. I'm glad you've decided to not tolerate being so emotionally abused. Drawing boundaries can escalate tensions & stress, its no wonder you've had a panic attack so bad you called paramedics - I feel for you. You must also be so worried about where your life is headed now, and who you can trust. Its good that you're looking for options & understanding. I'm glad you've come to these forums.

You seem to have insight, & in touch with you feelings. And of cause you're wondering if he ever really loved you in the first place (been there, thats a harsh place to visit & causes you to question yourself - there goes another piece of your self esteem).

Its good you are in counselling & have a good GP. Gather your support network close as this next 2 years will be hard. And look after your health.

Alarm bells are going off re his overspending. Do be careful, cover your back legally if possible.

I went through a painful divorce & major loss, I'm in recovery - anxiety, depression, bpd & complicated grief. My faith in Jesus keeps me going but I understand the conflict our faith brings into the equation ( that topic is for another day).

If you feel overwhelmed, deep breaths, mindfulness grounding, self-compassion therapy will help. Never hesitate to call lifeline or do chats. I found some good pages to follow on fb.

Hang in there, be gentle with yourself 💜💜💜
