Failed ECT

Failed ECT

I've had electro shock therapy as a final resort after a failed suicide attempt.

The ECT isn't working. Should I just throw the towel in.

Re: Failed ECT

Happy to be here @Jennifer_waugh. I don't know your situation well enough to advise about moving but in my case I am not prepared to take on a major life change when I'm still working hard to be reasonably stable. I have bipolar 1 and cPTSD. It would mean finding a whole new medical/psych support team for a start. And I'd no longer be near the few close friends I do have. Would have to risk a lot more anxiety triggers getting used to a new place. I'm just not ready to face all that yet.

Have you tried talking to the uni counsellor? You might be able to put some or all your degree on hold for a time without penalty so you can concentrate on developing a support team and strategies for coping.

If you read back over this conversation you will see we asked you several questions you didn't respond to. Please do feel safe to share more. Looking forward to getting to know you better. You can ask me about myself too if you want.

Re: Failed ECT

The Uni have been pretty understanding. The reality I hate my degree and need to move interstate towards my dream qualification, which is scary.

Re: Failed ECT

@Jennifer_waugh That sounds like some healthy hope to move forward to me. A great motivation. Will you get some credit for the studies you have already done?

Re: Failed ECT

I can get up to a years credit for my masters. I've officially given up on my dream of being a doctor.

What is it you do want to do if you move interstate?

Re: Failed ECT

Hello @Jennifer_waugh

Decisions about study and career choice can be so difficult: getting the skills and finding a fit for our personalities. Sometimes we study something and find that we are not cut out to pursue it long term. Can you make good choices for you that respect your whole person and not label a slight change in course as a failure.

I did not find lifeline helpful either. We all need different things. Take care.

Re: Failed ECT

I always wanted to be in the media and chose to pursue a law/health degree.

Re: Failed ECT

Sounds like it could be an inspiring new adventure for you. Do you have any contacts in Melbourne? It's a very good place to be for MH support too as far as I know. I have lots of relatives there, several of whom are in medicine one way or another. They've told me about services there.
