First Job Application In 2 Years

First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi all. 🙂

For 20-odd years I worked as an electrical engineer and technical writer. The stress and long hours were great for someone like me with bipolar - I could cope very well...

Until I would crash and burn into a major depression, that is...

For 20 years I repeated the same pattern - hypomanic high for about 2 years, then depression for about 6 months, hardly able to leave my darkened bedroom...

Repeat until life gets totally screwed up by a 2 year long depression and failed marriage (which finally led to diagnosis and treatment).

I've hardly worked in 5 years. Perhaps 5 or 6 weeks of technical writing (it's been dead since the global financial crisis) and a couple of months of bar work, pulling beers and making cocktails...

I was on Newstart for a year or so. I have a special hatred for how heartless the Centrelink system can be, how terrible it makes you feel. During that time, I applied for over 200 jobs. I did all in my power, but achieved exactly nothing... only 5 or 6 bothered to even send me an automated rejection email. The rest? A vast deafening silence, so that I never knew if my job applications were good, bad or indifferent. It was brutal...

I had to sell my house. When I converted the bricks and mortar to dollars in the bank, my Centrelink problems went away - no more support, and thankfully no more rubbish of theirs to deal with...

I've been self-funding my unemployment for 2 years now, travelling around Oz in a motorhome with my lovely partner.

But reality awaits. The party (and the money) never lasts forever. The rolling wheels have to stop sometime.

So, I've applied for a job. First time in 2 years. There's a bad taste in my mouth from my previous experiences, but I hope it will be different this time. The job is perfect for me - suits my experience and skills 100 percent.

It's a full time position. I haven't worked one of those since 2006. For 10 years, I've been doing contract consulting work through my own business.

I've learnt a lot about my bipolar in the past 4 years... I believe I'm ready...

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you all... 🙂

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

I got a reply back from my query email about the first job. Apparently there were a lot of applications - so they're still going through them. They'll let me know if I advance to interview stage...

Hi SIlenus,

if you do not get the job you can make a couple of hundred flyers and create your own editing home business. Then you go to a few Universities and leave the flyer at the libraries after asking for permission to do so, which will not be negated. You also put a few flyers on Noticeboards and sometimes Universities will give you permission to give some flyers to some students.

Then you make your own editing website where you provide the service online and make sure there is a credit card through PayPall so that you can get paid for the work that you do. Prices vary, some charge 10 dollars for 1000 words just for correction or about $15 for content and corrections and so on.

You have to sell yourself in this world, SIlenus, humbleness is good but not in business. You have the talent but as you rightly said you need the business side of things. I am sure that you can do it if you try to sell yourself, you have done some pretty increadible things like learning all about your condition and finding spirituality and coming to accept your bipolar. Developing a business sense is going to be easy compared to what you have done. As I said, you have the talent and you are a very intelligent, above average, person.

The work of the future, for many people that work as writers, will be mostly on computer, and from home.

May the Light be with you (sounds like a new, modified, version of Starwars)

I still haven't heard any more from the 2 jobs I applied for. Being patient, and ever on the lookout for more jobs to apply for...

Hugs...

Hey @Silenus

I am not sure if I have missed it - but - have you heard any more about your job application?

Hi @BlueBay

Thanks for thinking of me. 🙂

You get double hugs today...

Nope, not a peep. But these are technical writing jobs - fairly propellerhead stuff. And it's public sector - state government stuff too. Lots of hoops, I imagine...

I was informed by e-mail from the first job that there had been a lot of applications and it would take time to go through them all...

So, I'm relaxing doing some gardening... dirt under the fingernails AND by the sea... how lucky am I?

It's been a very Zen day. Fixed a small retaining wall for a raised bed in my lovely partner's sister's garden. We're staying with them at the mo-mo...

Hey @Silenus

I'm okay I guess, not 100% but okay.

I'm seeing my psych this afternoon, need to talk to him about my stuff. Finances are really tough and i hate talking about things like that because i feel so embarrassed and ashamed, but i need to talk to someone.

Thanks for the hugs, it's so nice of you.

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

Finances are, unfortunately, a very important part of life. And lots of peeps, through no fault of their own, are struggling. Times are tough...

Talking about it often helps, so try not to get too caught up with shame or embarrassment. Financial stress is one of the most damaging to our mental health...

I hope the session goes well...
Huggety huggy huggles... 🙂

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

hi @Silenus,

How is your job hunt going? I hope you are getting some replies but please don't get disheartened if you don't. It's a cruel world out there where you don't always get replies. But keep asking for feedback, you may be lucky.

With publishing your own books, is that an avenue you can pursue further? You said you were an electrical engineer - writing technical documentation? Which state are you looking for a job!

Keep faith in your abilities Si! Big hugs xoxoxo

"propellor-head" what a fabulously apt metaphor to describe a certain nerdy mentality ...
