First Job Application In 2 Years

First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi all. 🙂

For 20-odd years I worked as an electrical engineer and technical writer. The stress and long hours were great for someone like me with bipolar - I could cope very well...

Until I would crash and burn into a major depression, that is...

For 20 years I repeated the same pattern - hypomanic high for about 2 years, then depression for about 6 months, hardly able to leave my darkened bedroom...

Repeat until life gets totally screwed up by a 2 year long depression and failed marriage (which finally led to diagnosis and treatment).

I've hardly worked in 5 years. Perhaps 5 or 6 weeks of technical writing (it's been dead since the global financial crisis) and a couple of months of bar work, pulling beers and making cocktails...

I was on Newstart for a year or so. I have a special hatred for how heartless the Centrelink system can be, how terrible it makes you feel. During that time, I applied for over 200 jobs. I did all in my power, but achieved exactly nothing... only 5 or 6 bothered to even send me an automated rejection email. The rest? A vast deafening silence, so that I never knew if my job applications were good, bad or indifferent. It was brutal...

I had to sell my house. When I converted the bricks and mortar to dollars in the bank, my Centrelink problems went away - no more support, and thankfully no more rubbish of theirs to deal with...

I've been self-funding my unemployment for 2 years now, travelling around Oz in a motorhome with my lovely partner.

But reality awaits. The party (and the money) never lasts forever. The rolling wheels have to stop sometime.

So, I've applied for a job. First time in 2 years. There's a bad taste in my mouth from my previous experiences, but I hope it will be different this time. The job is perfect for me - suits my experience and skills 100 percent.

It's a full time position. I haven't worked one of those since 2006. For 10 years, I've been doing contract consulting work through my own business.

I've learnt a lot about my bipolar in the past 4 years... I believe I'm ready...

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you all... 🙂

Bugger. Sorry to hear that mate. As you say, at least they had the decency to (eventually) let you know the outcome.

Oh well, their loss.

Heyo @Silenus

Shame about the application, impressive state government responded in less than 3 months

Job rejections suck, they never really highlight that everyone but one applicant would have received one, I think I have a few filed away. Also probably doesn't help that government positions are regularly already filled internally but the position still needs to be advertised.

Did you think about giving them a call to discuss? I've noticed that I had better luck getting to an interview by calling after submitting an application. I was in contact with my current employer after a rejection and they offered me an identical position.

Sorry to hear your news @Silenus. I was just thinking today about that 'sliding doors' concept. Or was it just a movie? Anyway, about how our life is shaped by the doors that open for us. So many times I've banged on a door that wouldn't budge only to find a different one slide open. And life then takes off in an unexpected direction. Often better than the one I'd envisaged.

Keep an eye out for that sliding door @Silenus. Whoever recognises your abilities and opens the door for you will be very pleased they did.

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

I agree with what you say Suzanne but there is something cthat I could say to Silenus in all honesty.

I would like to add that being good at your profession is not enough, and I have found out the hard way. You know, I often read that having a Mental Disordr is not a personality problem. I find this to be totally wrong especially if the mental disorder, as is the case in the great number of cases, comes from trauma, especially childhood trauma.

In childhood trauma it is the personality that is affected. Emotional developement is often stumped or arrested as the person becomes more and more affected by erratic emotions that also have an impact on personality.

There is no doubt in my mind, Silenus, that in our case, due to our childhood traumatic experiences, we have a personality that is somehow problematic and that can prevent us from doing many things. I don't know if you go to therapy but that, I believe, is essential in order to work on our personality. You have a stong personality, Silenus, and I can tell that you are set in your ways and would not budge easily if asked to do things differently. IS this correct?

While you are a brilliant writer and you know your job, and would do a great job, your personality, just like mine, may need attention.

If you agree that your personality may be a bit difficult or that it needs to be worked on then start doing this just as I am doing now. Because a difficult personality can prevent you from getting the right job no matter how good you actually are at your job.

Don't know if this makes sense to others, it makes sense to me.

So yes what we cakll Mental Disorders (or Mental Illness which I don't like ), in PTSD, has mostly to do with a personality that needs attention.

I can be really difficult and really unusal at times. This can put people off. This may not be your case Silenus, I don't know, all I know is that Mental Disorders do affect personality. We often become bitter about life partly due to Stigma.
