First Job Application In 2 Years

First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi all. 🙂

For 20-odd years I worked as an electrical engineer and technical writer. The stress and long hours were great for someone like me with bipolar - I could cope very well...

Until I would crash and burn into a major depression, that is...

For 20 years I repeated the same pattern - hypomanic high for about 2 years, then depression for about 6 months, hardly able to leave my darkened bedroom...

Repeat until life gets totally screwed up by a 2 year long depression and failed marriage (which finally led to diagnosis and treatment).

I've hardly worked in 5 years. Perhaps 5 or 6 weeks of technical writing (it's been dead since the global financial crisis) and a couple of months of bar work, pulling beers and making cocktails...

I was on Newstart for a year or so. I have a special hatred for how heartless the Centrelink system can be, how terrible it makes you feel. During that time, I applied for over 200 jobs. I did all in my power, but achieved exactly nothing... only 5 or 6 bothered to even send me an automated rejection email. The rest? A vast deafening silence, so that I never knew if my job applications were good, bad or indifferent. It was brutal...

I had to sell my house. When I converted the bricks and mortar to dollars in the bank, my Centrelink problems went away - no more support, and thankfully no more rubbish of theirs to deal with...

I've been self-funding my unemployment for 2 years now, travelling around Oz in a motorhome with my lovely partner.

But reality awaits. The party (and the money) never lasts forever. The rolling wheels have to stop sometime.

So, I've applied for a job. First time in 2 years. There's a bad taste in my mouth from my previous experiences, but I hope it will be different this time. The job is perfect for me - suits my experience and skills 100 percent.

It's a full time position. I haven't worked one of those since 2006. For 10 years, I've been doing contract consulting work through my own business.

I've learnt a lot about my bipolar in the past 4 years... I believe I'm ready...

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you all... 🙂

Hey @Silenus

I can't remember - how did you go with your job application??

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi @BlueBay - I haven't heard anything from them yet. There was no phone number to call, but I did receive an email confirming my application, so I will email them tomorrow asking about it...

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

I sent an email to the agents that are handling the recruitment of the role I applied for, asking them if any progress had been made. I hope to hear back from them soon.

[/Start Rant]

I have a long and jaded history with recruitment agencies, both as an unemployed person applying for roles, and as an employer seeking the right person for a role. On both sides of the fence, I have seen spectacular and regular failures from recruitment agencies. I really can't fathom why an often inept middle man is paid so much to do so very little, and poorly at that...

[/End rant]

So, here's hoping that something actually happens regarding this particular role.

On the plus side, I just spent 3 hours making my cover letter and my resume prettier to look at, and less cluttered, and I applied for a second technical writer role, this one for a short term contract with a not for profit organisation.

It's easy enough getting back into the "looking for work" swing of things. The difficult thing is dealing with it once again turning into an "applying for hundreds of jobs in this impersonal email world, and getting no feedback at all ever" swing of things...

Dum spiro spero... While I breathe, I hope...

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi Silenus, why don't you proof read essays of University students? There is a bit of money in that. If I remember correctly, I did tell you about this. Also, proof reading for booksis good and you can work from home. I have two friends that do this and they have established a good business. Editors of publishing companies are always on the look out for goos writers that can correct written material.

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi @theaveragejoe - yes it was good advice. I managed to proof read one thesis, and sent my details to the university I graduated as an electrical engineer from. They never got back to me, and after hounding them for a few weeks and never getting a reply, I became somewhat disillusioned by that avenue of work...

I'm good at what I do. Heck, I'm even great at it. But I'm terrible at being a salesman. I've owned a proprietary limited company for 10 years, and times were good when there was so much work around that I was knocking work back. In this somewhat more austere time of slow economies, I've found it difficult to procure contracts...

It's a limitation of mine that I've not yet succeeded in improving much. I'm naturally a humble person who is uncomfortable around compliments from others. This also manifests as me not being good at tooting my own horn. I undersell my experience and skill rather than make a big noise. Alas, that is not the favoured tactic of advertising and sales.

I like that difference, but it doesn't do me any favours in business, trying to procure work, either contract or ad hoc...
