First Job Application In 2 Years

First Job Application In 2 Years

Hi all. 🙂

For 20-odd years I worked as an electrical engineer and technical writer. The stress and long hours were great for someone like me with bipolar - I could cope very well...

Until I would crash and burn into a major depression, that is...

For 20 years I repeated the same pattern - hypomanic high for about 2 years, then depression for about 6 months, hardly able to leave my darkened bedroom...

Repeat until life gets totally screwed up by a 2 year long depression and failed marriage (which finally led to diagnosis and treatment).

I've hardly worked in 5 years. Perhaps 5 or 6 weeks of technical writing (it's been dead since the global financial crisis) and a couple of months of bar work, pulling beers and making cocktails...

I was on Newstart for a year or so. I have a special hatred for how heartless the Centrelink system can be, how terrible it makes you feel. During that time, I applied for over 200 jobs. I did all in my power, but achieved exactly nothing... only 5 or 6 bothered to even send me an automated rejection email. The rest? A vast deafening silence, so that I never knew if my job applications were good, bad or indifferent. It was brutal...

I had to sell my house. When I converted the bricks and mortar to dollars in the bank, my Centrelink problems went away - no more support, and thankfully no more rubbish of theirs to deal with...

I've been self-funding my unemployment for 2 years now, travelling around Oz in a motorhome with my lovely partner.

But reality awaits. The party (and the money) never lasts forever. The rolling wheels have to stop sometime.

So, I've applied for a job. First time in 2 years. There's a bad taste in my mouth from my previous experiences, but I hope it will be different this time. The job is perfect for me - suits my experience and skills 100 percent.

It's a full time position. I haven't worked one of those since 2006. For 10 years, I've been doing contract consulting work through my own business.

I've learnt a lot about my bipolar in the past 4 years... I believe I'm ready...

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you all... 🙂

Heya @Silenus

University can be so frustrating! My background is in teaching and I needed that piece of paper to enter a school - but did my real learning about the job as I was teaching.

Here is a link to the Cert IV in Mental health peer support work. Looks interesting.

Also as a FYI, this week's Career Chat is about interviews, if you're interested!

Hi Silenus,

I know what you mean.

I studied clinical psychology for two years, (after gaining a bachelor degree with honours in sociology, a total waste of time, except that I learned how to write English a bit better :)) but abandoned the studies because I did not see the relevance, it was mostly about science, medication and the brain as a machine 🙂

As you probably know, I am mostly for the kind of psychology of Freud, Maslow, and Carl Rogers, and those who believed in the person first and second the mental disorder. I do understand the importance of biological issues, the environment and the psychology of the mind all working together when it comes to a mental disorder. But what I studied was irrelevant to making people feel better, feel like people. In my opinion that is. Perhaps that is what they teach in the first three years in psychology and even so I think it is wrong.

But at the university I was at, a science driven University (increasingly the trend in all Universities) psychology was more like a doctor's degree as general practitioner than psychology as it should be.

The subjects that were most useful to me, were Philosophy, history and education, when I did the bachelor degree that is.

But as you say, education does not really prepare you well for a job. Everything is constantly changing and Universities are more like businesses, after money, than places that prepare people well for a better future. I think that somewhere along the way corruption has affected all areas of life. It is all corrupted by money and greed with a bit of good things here and there and good people, of course.

I agree that you have an ideal disposition for helping people, Silenus, you would be much valued in a mental health job.

I'm doin a cert iv in mental health with an aim of bein a peer support worker as some may know

the hardest thing I'm finding from case studies is when and how to detach

like we cant take on everyone problems and make them our own we just need to empathise and sympathise I guess

its not particularly hard for me but I can foresee it being a problem for others

Re: First Job Application In 2 Years

@GonePirate good luck in your thinking about case studies ... some of the problem can be that the needs are so great that some people find it hard to put a boundary up .. so the peer worker .. might need to .. dunno .. never worked in the field, but read a bit ...

I applied to become a psych nurse when i was about 20. I passed a lot of the processes but told at the end that I would not be able to detach from people's issues as I divulged that my father had schizophrenia. I was very young and it was probably the right call, though I was devastated at the time. The truth is it has taken me 30 years to disentangle the medical words from the real life experiences of my close people.

I hope you get work .. Its a worth while challenge .. and very necessary.
