Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

@BlueBay, @Former-Member, @GonePirate, thank you for sharing. As others have said, your writing is so vivid and real. I can understand why it might be difficult to read one another’s stories, but I hope the sharing has also been valuable. It’s not easy to talk about past trauma but it can also be therapeutic. I hope it helps to know you have all had some similar experiences and have processed them in your own ways.

If any of this has brought up difficult memories and emotions, please remember there are support services available to listen and talk things through.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

it may be hard to talk about at times yes
but it is always beneficial
I find the more I talk about it the less power it has over me
so I explore it
ive also done a few excersises
such as writing a letter never to be posted and then burning it after I read it
this letter was addressed to my abuser
another to my parents
both were heated and ugly but that's how I felt and it was good to be rid of it

a lot can be learned from our fellow sufferers and a lot can be gained through talking

PIRATE PRAYERS

Dear lord, i beg of thee

if you even know of me

then please hear my prayer

if you’re even out there

you gave me so much pain

within a twisted little brain

so much it makes me want to die

and I would like to ask you why?

and I don’t want an interpretation, a suggestion or idea

I don’t want to know what others think I want the answers loud and clear

what id like is for everyones little imaginary friend to show his face

so I can show him his masterpiece is a despicable disgrace

he’s a flawed being to begin with a hypocrite and a fool

and one whose lead by example and broken his every rule

and even though I don’t even the slightest believe your there

if you are id appreciate it if you admitted you don’t care

well that was just a little something that I felt if had to share

and if you say so then its true I think that constitutes a prayer

amen

dear lord hear my prayer

if your real or not I do not care

its just something I must say

and you know that I do not pray

but I will try again in vein

because I am in so much pain

and I am trying my best to heal

with no real way to deal

other than to let it out

the occasional shriek and shout

faith long ago has left me

and on this day I do see

that it was in fact I who left it

because I think its a piece of shit

a crutch for those who need it

formed by beliefs so deeply seeded

I do not believe in you

nor in anything you do

but I hope you believe in me

and I guess only I will see

I need strength to keep on fighting

I need patience to stop from biting

I need so much and I finally cave

give me something so I can be brave

prove to me your real

prove to me you feel

cause if you share my pain

then you are equally insane

and if not I guess I never mattered

my life is so torn and tattered

why did you make me this way

that's the question I have for you this day

amen

dear lord up above

why don't I feel your love

why do I feel an absence of all that you are

why do I have a feeling that your neither near or far

and if its true what they say

that you work in a mysterious way

then I don't much care for your act

and I say this is a fact

I’m quite sick of this life

all the trouble and the strife

and I know I shouldn't blame

but this after all is all your game

do you want us to feel alone

is my pain something you condone

or is it punishment for a past misdeed

give me the answers that I need

amen

dear lord you know its true

that I don't believe in you

I don't even know what’s real

all I know is what I feel

and its a deep sense of emptiness

one I try to express

when no one else is there

and it just comes out as prayer

truly funny and ironic

as your presence is iconic

but your presence isn't felt by me

nor seen in anything I see

is it all just a lies

so we have something to live by

we don't need a god to be a decent human

you don't need a god to be thankful for flowers blooming

you don't need a god to wait for you after death

just accept that life ends and make the most of what’s left

and I know you know its true

that I don't believe in you

and I don't really care

I hope this constitutes another prayer

amen

Hey @GonePirate

Thank you so much for sharing with us that you are feeling okay this morning, and you benefit from hearing the experiences of others shared here ......

Even if she is not ready to read it right now, I think when @BlueBay reads this later she will realise she hasn't hurt you - she has helped you by sharing the way she did.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

@GonePirate, wow, think you just 'gonepirate' at God, Sounds like some venting i read in the holy bible - Job, king david in psalm, prophet in Jeremiah, king Solomon in ecclesiastics... & Jesus in the garden of gethsamane. all brutally honest with God & self, yet each one concluding they had accept what is & move away from it to the bigger picture. Still learning this myself, every day, its the human condition in a broken world. So much anger to it blocks compassion & perpetuates evil. When I pray I trust the bigger picture of agape & be thankful for it. Then when i open my eyes i see nature, the beautiful sky, safety and warmth overnight, and my affectionate doggy beside me, the birds chattering, good people here who care, and the hot cup of tea in my hands, and i am thankful.

Dear @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @GonePirate

Thank you to each and everyone of you for your thoughts and kindness.

@GonePirate I am okay; to be honest I was a bit traumatised this mornnig but only with my own stuff. I thought I had upset you when I spoke about my abuse as a child. I am glad you are not angry with me 🙂

And I just want to say that i am very very sorry that you had to go through so much trauma and abuse. My heart goes out to you. Sending you a big hug.

I also like what you wrote in your poems; I can relate to it. In a way I hope that I have helped you release some of your anger and able to share with us; and just knowing that we all care about each other. That is a huge positive.

@Faith-and-Hope thank you so much for your love, lighting the candle for me and my inner child. When I read this morning what you were doing I broke down. No one has ever been so nice and kind to me before. I feel you really understand me; thank you. You know, you wrote about leaving my door open for my parents; at the moment I can't because I've been hurt too much. The pain is unbearable especially by the words my mum said to me. It is still too painful. As for the abusers - well once has passed away, the other is not in my life at the moment and the other I haven't seen for over 30 years. And I don't want to see them either.

@Former-Member thank you for emailing me today and checking on me. I am okay, still a bit fragile but ok. i ended up staying at work all day, tried my hardest to stay busy and now i am home.

@Former-Member thank you for your kind words as well and for lighting a candle.

It got me thinking that maybe i need to light a candle for 'my inner child' and say a little prayer for her. Even maybe talk to her at times. Trouble is if i do i will cry. because there is so much i want to say to her but don't know how.

Sending you all a really big hug from me to you. xxxooo

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Baby steps @BlueBay

It is enough to think of caring for 'your inner child', if that is all you can manage for now, and I expect all the tears are grief-based for what 'she' suffered so horrendously ...... it is you nurturing 'you', and tears are a part of the healing process ........ go gently with yourself, light a candle, and just that for now ........and the tears will slow after a while ....... and then maybe you can say a small prayer for 'her' ....... and then the tears will likely flow again for a while .......

There will be a process to go through @BlueBay. Take the time you need, and be gentle. And we are here for you ....... 🌷

The door to your past is yours to open or close as you see fit .......

You have the right to let people in, or close them out ....... and at any point if you change your mind, you can open or close it at that time too. It is important that you feel your personal authority to do that ..... it is part of you reclaiming your life, and your future, for yourself and those you love, and who love you in return.

Be well @BlueBay. Take the time you need on your journey to being well, and keep stepping forward on that path.
