Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Maybe your family just don't know how to be kind @BlueBay ....... maybe nobody has ever shared the recipe with them and showed them how great it tastes, what it is worth ........

That is what is just so special about what you are doing ❣. Can you see it now @BlueBay ?? You are going to therapy ❣ You are actively seeking healing ❣ You are so loving, forgiving and accepting of your family, warts and all, that you are still seeking their love, affection and attention after all you have been through ...... ❣

You are breaking a cycle that doesn't nurture and heal you, and replacing it with one that does ❣

You can't heal them @BlueBay ....... it is for them to reach out where healing is offered and choose to take it in, as you are doing, but as far as it is within your power, your ability to cope, you can leave the door open for them, and wait for them to come to you to receive the gifts you are holding for them.

It will be sad if they never come, but it is their choice at the end of the day ...... and do you know what ?? You will survive if they don't ..... ❣ It is their loss if they don't, because you are beautiful ❣ Even as a wounded 9 year old, your inner child has grown beautiful in a way they can't even understand at this point in time ......

Wait for them @BlueBay, leave the door open to them to see if they will come, if it is in your heart to keep doing so, but don't hold up your life waiting for them ........ don't let their lack of response steal joy from the beautiful new family you have made with your husband ❣

Live for your new family @BlueBay, and send good wishes to your birth family, light candles for them, say prayers for them, but look to the future you have before you, and if they choose not to come forward into that with you, leave the door open in case they change their minds, but keep stepping forward into your poetry, and your art, and your children's bright futures.

❤️

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

i wrote these two poems because im angry as fuark

all this talk of childhood sexual abuse brings up demons i thought long dead

see i too was abused kept it secret for years

female to male sibling sexual abuse is a rare one but whatevs doesnt mean it doesnt happen

im not going to go into details

just need to vent my spleeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

Hey There...

hey there abuser

this adversary of mine

the destroyer of innocence

the corruption of mind

i have burnt bridges

for a peace i cant find

family ties

the ties that bind

the fake charade

starts to ravel and unwind

i cant keep it in

i must speak my mind

wait now just wait

it is not the right time

one day there will be peace

that i hope i can find

Silent Scream...

you f@#king putrid peace of shit

how i long to watch you burn

i suffered by your f@#king hand

and now it is your turn

you disgusting dispicable excuse for a human

how i long for your demise

you were the one blessed with forgetfullnes

i see in the look in your eyes

i long for you to remember

but my recovery is not dictated by it

i wish for you to suffer

to suffer as i did

see i have grown older

much stronger than you

i dont mean just physically

but mentally too

your lies seldom bother me

your deceit is your mask

i will bury you in memory

a shattered but whole past

i can play your games

of lies and of blame

but id rather play

with gasoline and flame

you spit your venom

i spit on your grave

and laugh as to guilt

you become slave

there is so much i wish

and of so much i dream

but ive said all i am ready

the rest is a silent scream

I'm sorry too @BlueBay, that that happened to you. Like @Faith-and-Hope, i want to hold your 9yr old self until she cried out the pain & feels safe again. You're a great mum. I think this history makes us more vigilant as parents. It happened to me when I was 4, 11 & 17. I don't trust men or authority figures because of it, and wonder where my parents were, but i never for one minute believe it was God's will. It wasn't our fault. I don't know why God doesn't strike these predators dead to spare us,, but, i do know the Lord experienced the trauma with us, & cries with us & understands every little detail & will settle the score for us one day & help us through till then. Never stop talking with God, the tears in prayer are spiritual healing. Don't give up.

I have had a lot of angry conversations with God. Now I also realise that when it is truth, they are prayers.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

I'm sorry @GonePirate

I never meant to write anything on here to upset or hurt anyone. If I have I am sorry. It was not my intention to hurt anyone. We are all suffering as victims of abuse.

@NikNik pls pls message me or email me.

@GonePirate tears are flowing for you. I am so sorry to read what you wrote. This is just too raw for me and I can't deal with it right now.

I am sending you a big hug. pls take care xxxooo

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Ahoy again all @PeppiPatty @Former-Member @BlueBay if i missed anyone sorry

first and foremost thanks for the replies peeps

secondly @BlueBay allow me to elaborate im not upset im angry

and not angry at you either

no im angry at myself

see i know it wasnt my fault

i know i wasnt weak or deserving

i was a victim

im angry because ive done 52 sessions over the course of a year with a SAS sexual assault service

and yet still i find myself caught up in the same thoughts youve expressed yourself

the repeated assessment and returning to the abuse

ive reached a point where i can talk about it in detail without falling apart

but i guess i havnt reached a point where it has no influence or power over me

maybe i never will

this is what angers me

and my anger is a violent storm...

but all is well the venting helped greatly and i have a psych appointment today good timing i guess
