Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Hi @BlueBay,

Fantastic that you went ahead and took on the art therapy today. The inner critic is one of the biggest blocks to artistic expression. You faced up to it and won. The more you can now ease up on any judgement of what you are doing, the freer your creativity will flow. I wonder if there are things that you do in your life that you do not exercise self-judgement on while you are doing them. For example, gardening, going for a walk, watching your dog play. If you can remember how you feel when doing things like that and bring that attitude to your creativity, you may have an easier time of it as time goes on. Really, creativity is just another thing that anyone can do, like absent minded doodling when you are on the phone to someone. Especially when it comes to art therapy, it really doesn't matter whether what you do is 'good' or 'bad', those ideas just don't really apply. But the main thing is that you have started now and, as @Faith-and-Hope has already suggested, it's likely to get easier as time goes by. Big congrats again on being brave enough to take on this challenge. My favourite lines of your poem are:

I sat and looked back at today

and thought gee it was okay

🙂

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

So here we all are,
another day's done
Meandering travels
Work, play & love
Our minds stay alert
as our pillows call
We try to wind down
need to login once more
See what everyone's up to
Maybe help a friend
But am pleasantly surprised
that they help me in the end
So finally I'm sleepy
Have to turn out the light
Pleasant dreams to all
And to all a good night

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Thank you so much @Mazarita

Here is a poem for my youngest child, 20 yrs old and about to go on his very first overseas holiday on his own (leaving Sunday)

To my son:

As the day approaches

And you have been counting down

I know you will be excited

and so will i deep down

I see you as 'my baby'

but yet you are so mature

for you are set in your goals

from when you were a child

You always knew what you wanted

A builder, a carpenter, no an accountant

So off you went to Uni

and in a few more years you will be there

So as you fly this weekend

and take to the sky

You start your journey on your own

and gee I'm proud of you

I can't wait to hear all about

your trip

where you've been and what you've seen

and who you've met along the way

I wish I could have done this trip like you

at your age but then I was married

and I left home just like you

So all I say is I wish you luck

love, health and stay safe

for this is a once in a lifetime trip for you

and I hope you cherish it all

Stay safe, take care and just one

thing you need to do .....

pls remember to ring me too

I can't write anymore for I will cry

tears are welling up inside

so now I wish you all the best

on yoru trip, good luck

Bon Voyage!!!!

Love mum xxxxooo

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Thats a lovely poem @BlueBay, Do you find it helps to put it in words? I do. Will you give it to your son?

Do you have faith? It helps me a lot to pray & trust my son in Gods care & protection (God is everywhere). We have a lot of spiritual authority as mums. Sometimes I ask for extra angles to be with him too & picture them on bonnets of cars and walking beside him like glowing giant bodyguards, & I ask for the Holy Spirit to guide him away from harm, and toward the right people. I think your poem is already a prayer from the heart to God - the universe hears you.

While my son travelled overseas i made a crochet throw rug in his favourite colours to give home when he got home. Every stitch was a prayer and affirmed my love for him.

Keep writing 💕

Thanks @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Mazarita

You know @Former-Member I do pray to God and ask Him for help, support and love and to surround love and guidance for my children.

But after I remembered my childhood sexual abuse 5 years ago I was angry with God. I stopped praying because I was so angry because I wasn't protected. I wanted Him to protect me and then i thought i must have done something really bad in life to deserve the abuse. But i was only a child, 9 years old. Sometimes now if i pray i end up in tears because it brings memories back of when i was a child.

I think I will be praying a lot while my son is away.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

I am so sorry to hear what you had suffered as a child @BlueBay, and I can understand how that would affect your ability to trust in God.

It is a terrible thing when children are exposed to evil ..... I don't have any answers for situations like what you have gone through.

I can only hope that you have received many, many blessings in your life that help you to heal, such as your beautiful children, and I am glad that at least sometimes you feel able to pray God's protection over them.

I will light a candle for your 9 year old self, and pray comfort and healing for her within you, so she can grow past her pain and suffering through your poetry and artwork, and into the love she has found in you having a family of your own, where the children were kept safe ......

I hope it's okay to say that to you @BlueBay. I want to hug the little girl inside you who was so badly hurt, and I feel so proud of you that you have raised your children to adults, and you are learning to trust that they can be safe even when they are not right with you.

@faithandhope
I'm crying. No one in my life has ever done anything as beautiful as you have tonight. And just for me wow never thought I was that important.
I'm so hurting because I feel so much for my inner child sobbing for her. How helpless she must have been. How scared she must have been. And then to tell my mum after 35 yrs and to be yelled at. Like I'm the bad one. Am I? Why didn't she protect me or even believe in me.
From the bottom of my heart thank you so much. If I could meet you I would give you a huge hug. ❤️❤️Xxxooo
You are so kind to me.
I wish my family were too but they're nowhere near being Kind.

@faithandhope
So much more I want to write but I can't tonight. Need to get my head around the words I want to say.
I will tomorrow.
I love my 3 children so much. All I wanted was to be a mum.
I hate my mum so much. I can't go there talking about her I'll get really angry and upset. Chat more tomorrow. Xxxooo
