Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

And it is truly awesome that your world keeps evolving in what hopefully continues to be a positive way @Silenus. I’m always a sucker for a good news story. 💜🤗

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

I was wondering why my ears were burning... hahaha...

@Teej... oooh... I do love chaos... 🙂 ... let's get one thing out of the way about chaos... sometimes, once the fear of it has been overcome, and once the illusions of control that we drape over everything have been removed, we come to realise that chaos is just life, and a healthy response to it is not always to sit down and dissect it into a million pieces to study it from every angle possible...

By that time, life has passed us by, and we have invented a whole world full of suffering, grief and conflict through our overactive overthinking minds...

You ask me if I had a plan to work towards my recovery. Yes! Definitely...

I was at the bottom (but there is always lower, isn't there?). My initial plan was to climb until I was able to reach a point where I could stand on level ground instead of constantly falling deeper into the bottomless pit that was the darker parts of myself...

I at least got to a point where I could gather my thoughts and calm my emotions enough to further refine my recovery plan... call it a craggy foothold on the sides of my bottomless hole if you will...

My plan towards recovery became very simple, because you cannot follow complicated plans when you are hurting and desperate...

My plan was to survive long enough to be able to get to know myself better... to come to understand what made me tick and tock the way that I do, so that I could understand how to adjust my life and my self, my surroundings and beliefs and value systems and prejudices, all of the scope of what was good and bad within me, all of it was open to a fierce inspection...

What grew from it was a realisation that I hated myself so very much in so many ways, and it was not my fault... it was nobody's fault... it just was... who was to blame was totally beside the point... what remained was the truth...

I was broken... I needed fixing... the person best able to fix me was the person who knew me best... myself...

So, that became my plan...

Survive... and learn more more more about myself... self awareness is everything... it teaches us all that we need to know to navigate this most complex of things... our selves...

How did I know if I was on the right path to recovery? Shit hurt less than it did yesterday... I didn't respond with anger this time... I smiled instead of screamed... I came to nurture the watcher within, so that I could observe my thoughts and emotions and energy levels and lots of other things, dispassionately and without conflict... I learned that inner conflict is perhaps the greatest source of ill mental health... I practiced treating myself with love and compassion rather than hate and loathing... I came to still the inner conflict and brokered a peace within my own mind...

Then I slid back into my old patterns and screwed everything up again...

But I didn't give in to guilt or self reproach...

I kept trying... and eventually the new thought and behaviour patterns started to stick...

What we are trying to do is to rewire our brains, to change the patterns of a lifetime... this does not happen overnight, or with minimal effort... this is a lifelong goal of self improvement, of self evolution... I know I am on the right path because I am on a path... whatever path it is, I believe that truth is a pathless land, so as long as you are walking and striving, you will bumble into truth in your own way...

Just some idle thoughts, as always... much love to you, @Teej... may the spinning head ease, and may your problem-seeking mind solve those problems, or at least absolve you of the guilt of not solving them... huggles... 🙂

Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much @Silenus for your very considered response. It was very much what I needed to hear. I think I’m at the I hate myself very much stage. It’s so hard to navigate with that much anger and pain at oneself. Thank you it has really helped me to drop the intensity a bit. Take good care of you and good luck with the new business and house. 💜🤗

Deep breath, in and out
Trying to keep myself in check
All around me people talking
But all I hear is noise
Can't understand a single thing
I try to speak and communicate what I feel
But my words betray me
Now everyone thinks I'm happy
Happy....
Happy....
But behind it all I'm crying
So much build up
Don't think I can keep going on
I feel like the real me is fading
And soon I will be just a meer memory

I wonder what it's like to feel normal
To be just a everyday person
To only worry about normal day to day life
And not feel trapped but demons of the past
Is it possible to be something more than a damaged person
Who has a future with bright prospects
Or am I forever bound to my torments
Is it possible for me to be free

I feel like the walls are closing in
It getting harder for me to keep fighting
I know that people need me
And for so long I have kept myself going
But I feel that time is running out
And I might loose this fight

@Silenus, my writing often is the only way to express how I truly feel I always feel unable to express what I'm feeling and often hide it writing gives me freedom to a degree

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @Silenus,

Great to hear of your current fantastic projects, shop, house, wider internet presence for your creativity. And keeping your other job at the same time. Respect for achieving so much, and in a short time. May blessings shower your endeavours.

I love how you don't give in to guilt or self reproach. I've been doing a little ritual to myself (and sharing it with some others), since the end of last year. Hand on the heart, saying out loud to myself, 'I forgive you'. Helps me. A gift from my psychologist, someone I respect and appreciate enormously.

Anyway, huggles! Always a good moment when you drop in for a visit.
