Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

SILENCE

The silence hangs

like a dewy, misty morning

the silence envelopes and winds

it's quiet wings around your soul

whispering words of calm and serenity

to the hammering pounding of your anxious heart

to the screaming thoughts that rage inside

to the sorrows flapping broken wings

to a voice that cries out as a whisper

the silence is peace and calamity

in the same room and space, fighting to be heard

silence is the breaths we breathe, in and out

that keep us alive despite our greatest protests

silence is the sound when we have given in.

Noon

Blue day

interior darkness

cloudless sky

sun on the outside

white screen

draws me closer

to an imaginary

life.

Created from disillusion

even before I was born

a reckless start

to the first day

lifted from womb

forever asleep.

Wake!, they say

when my wiring

is so ancient

it can't take the voltage

of even a simple way.

A cryptic blue poem

in the middle of a day.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hello everybody.

It has been a while. My absence from the forum has been due to a rather frantic series of events in my life of late. I don't mean this in a bad way, by the way... frantic can be really good, especially when one decides to selectively release some of that good old bipolar spontaneity... hahaha...

So... we opened up a shop in the next town along from where we live. It sells fashion, jewellery, homewares, interesting furniture and other one off items...

It has been a vehicle to connect our family again... my Lovely Partner's sister has moved back down, and is managing the shop... she's a wizz with fashion, and her innate sense of style and amazing skills at visual merchandising are one of the main reasons that my bipolar spontaneity was let out to exercise itself a bit...

We were all talking one night about it over perhaps a glass of wine or two over the quantity needed to sate one's thirst... it was like a "What if we just open up a shop?"

Anyway, much laughter and wine later, sober minds came to reject the idea...

But bipolar I did not let go of that joking dream of a ship that was launched on a sea of wine the night before...

I pursued it... I nudged and gently suggested... we all had a sober conversation about it, and I did the risk analysis and business case and other boring stuff (my world at the moment in my current technical writing role... gaaah! Useful skills in certain spaces, but oh so dry and dull)...

Anyway, we took the plunge, signed up for a year's lease (the joys of rural Oz - you can negotiate on a level playing field with owners of capital), and the rest has been go go go go gO GO GO!!!

There are a million steps before opening a bricks and mortar shop... we walked those million steps, and now we've been open for almost a month, and the response has been nothing short of delightful... so much support and love from the community...

We judged our market and our area and our timing perfectly (and most of it was luck rather than planned timing)... we went with our gut, and our gut was right...

I love life when you take a plunge, and things work out...

I even love life when you take a plunge, and things don't work out...

You will never know if you never give it a go... or words to that effect... 🙂

Anyway, huge hours, as it is all on top of my 9-5 day job... I got to set up all the IT, the back end admin stuff, and the social media presence...

In the process, I learned a lot about the instagrams and facebooks and the hashtags and what have you, and have launched myself as a poet, writer and philosopher on there... once again, the response has been amazing... so many people in so many loving communities... and a great opportunity for me to hone my writing skills and my Photoshop skills... woot woot... win win...

It's all about reaching out...

Depression, anxiety, phobias, fears, all of these things isolate us from society... it's like mental health issues are the savage hunting beasts, separating the weak from the herd so that they can sink their teeth into us...

When we connect with the communities around us (and there are many more options available these days, such as this fine forum here) we can share and grow together... it really is the most amazing thing...

So, anyhoo... lots going on... oh, and we bought a house today...

Bahahahaaa... I love the spontaneity of bipolar... it really does take you to the most amazing places...

Much love to you all... hugs and happy vibes aplenty beaming your way... thank you all for keeping me in a little piece of your hearts... it means so much... it is what community is all about... 🙂 🙂

Naawww... thanks, @Teej 🙂

You know that feeling when it feels like everything is going just that little bit too well, and the crash may be just around the corner?

Eeeeeeep!

Yeah... that's just good old-fashioned negative brain being a poo-head...

But the feeling still remains...

No surprises when I say still chaotic @Silenus 😆. I really hope that crash doesn’t come. It’s great to throw your passions into something that seems like it’s paying off in many unexpected ways.

I actually thought of you today. Did you ever have a plan that you worked towards recovery? How did you know you were on the right path. My head has been spinning all week problem solving but not achieving much.
