Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

When I use... I go into a state of severe paranoia... In my thoughts... Lots of people are coming against me... For everything I've ever done wrong... And it all based around worst fears that my mind has concocted... Too be judged for mistakes made... And too fear the punishment for these mistakes... (it's how my mind works when I'm high)

This scenario is always there... It is always lurking around in my mind somewhere... And wanting to consume me and devour me... And I think it is... A huge motivating force... Behind all the positive thoughts in my mind... (which are technically classified as symptoms)... Which I try to live up too and get hooked into... Because they are they opposite... They are rewarding me for good behaviour... Which I love...

It becomes a storyline of totally delusional thoughts... Which jump from persecution to grandiose so quickly...

Really liked your poems @eudemonism @Mazarita @Silenus

Really talented. Poetry kind of shows your inner most thoughts and desires doesn't it. Your subconscious streaming sentences alive. I think, because our minds and souls have been to other places, our poetry will be truely unique and reflect this. A real blessing I think. Our poems will be truely magical. I try to practice the craft every day and see what the collective consciousness has to offer me, which is what I think we are tapping into. I think and hope that by being aware of my greater awareness I can be more mentally stable and well. But it is always a battle and I think humility and modesty are amongst our greatest defences against becoming unwell.

I will continue to read more of what you have said @Silenus

Your insights are really helpful.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Thanks, @joeblow. I liked reading yours too. I agree we seem to connect with some kind of collective consciousness through creativity. I sometimes feel like I am being a 'medium' for something greater than me. I'm not religious but mystery seems to me to make up a large portion of reality still.

I think it's great that you practise every day. As you say, there is craft to it, of which I know little. Mostly I like to be as free with it as possible, with some kind of form. I've only started writing poetry semi-regularly here in this discussion thread, started by @Silenus a long time ago.

Do you read much poetry? I find it haphazardly on the net and have made net friends with some writers, mostly overseas. We don't talk to each other like at the forum. But it's nice to see what they are doing in social media feeds. I probably read some poetry every day.

Your sense that connecting with a greater awareness may lead to greater stability and wellness, may be on to something. Creativity has been a lifeline for me, for survival and wellbeing.

Humility and modesty, I have much to work on there. A noble aim.

Best to you, Maz.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

The essence of suffering. Is upon my soul. From dawn till dusk. It has become my friend. It has become something. That will probably never leave me side.

Am I a sensitive person in a cruel world. Or a cruel person in a sensitive world? I've practically lost all hope of ever returning. Too the prior being. That was once within me. Science says. It cannot happen.

I wonder what I've done. Too bring so much. Pain, suffering and anguish upon myself. I wonder why I'm so miserable...

Within my mind. The world and the rest of the human kind. Are literally the enemy. The source of fear. Too an extent. That makes. My worst fears control me.

Governed bye my own mind. Governed bye. Interpretation of right and wrong. Pleading for the innocence that does not exist. Pleading my case you too the world around me. And too the rest of human kind. It is. The torture chamber of my mind. Why has this happened to me?

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

We are in a world. Where we have to fight everyday. Regardless if we want too or not. Reality is the stage. Of every battle we must face. Everyone will essentially do the wrong thing toward you. It's just a matter of time. When it will happen, how it will happen, why it will happen and who it will involve.

Some people get tired of fighting. Some people realize they've had enough. Perhaps the biggest battle. Is within ourselves. But the eternal questions. Of who is right? And who is wrong? Remains.

I understand what would drive a human being. Into the the abyss of being a recluse. Or a hermit. Or living the most sheltered life possible. And it's an act of bravery. It's an act of spiritual preservation.

A circle of innocence. Can cause so much destruction. For a corrupted world. A circle of forgiveness. So they can judge the world. A circle of corrupted beings. Who think they've done no wrong. A circle of Insecurities. A circle of angry victims.

We live in a world. Where the majority. Deny themselves the dignity and respect. Too learn from their mistakes. While they crucify. Everybody. Who ain't ever ticked their boxes of what it takes to be a hero.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @Mazarita Yep, that is what I think. We are tapping into the collective consciousness, or the spirit realm, or heaven, or hell, or the fourth dimension. Whatever you want to call it.

You see, I have a theory about all this mental health stuff. Why we get ill. @Silenus it would be good to get your ideas on this one.

We simply have a Neurotransmitter chemical problem between the Synapses in our brains. Our brains are made up of a whole heap of microscopic wiring and the Neurotransmitter chemicals (Dopamine, Serotonin etc) allow the electrical impulse flow of information along that wiring. We simply have too much Neurotransmitter chemical. It makes our brains create a "Mind" that is different or unique or what could also be termed as unhealthy. 1 or 2 in 100 people have this problem.

Now, this "Mind" that is created behaves differently because of the overabundance of Neurotransmitter chemicals. Our "Minds" are simply able to tap into the collective consciousness, or spirit realm, or heaven or whatever you want to call it more than a "normal" person because of the chemical oversupply causing our brains to fire differently. Now, there are freaky things going on there in this spirit realm which are hard to understand. There are good and bad spirits and indifferent spirits and all sorts of things. Who knows how this realm operates. Only God.

So, this is why we have the weird interactions the way we do with this realm. We hear things and see things and have all sorts of interactions with the occupants of this realm. Now, it is hard to create a dialog with academics and psychiatric professionals about all of this stuff because most of them don't believe in good or bad or heaven or hell or even God. So what to do. I have spent the past 30 years trying to figure this all out because no one has a bloody clue what is going on with us. It is only when you use the context of a spiritual world that any of this makes sense. I am not an overly religious man. I believe in right and wrong, in a heaven and a hell and an all powerful God that controls it all and thats about it. If you examine just about every living culture on earth, they all believe in these things too. The Jews, Christians, Muslims, Australian Aboriginals. They all believe in something.

@eudemonismmay be experiencing a bit of inner turmoil at the moment. My theory is that the bad forces in this realm get a hold of you and try to deceive you. They say "You are better than everyone else" and "You are the best at everything" and "Come and join us". They are trying to make you unwell. This is why we end up with grandiose delusions and such. The only way I have found to combat these thoughts that lead to psychosis and hospitalisation is to counteract them with modesty and humility and down to earth thoughts and behavioural patterns. Tell yourself "I am just OK" and "I am just your average Joe Blow going about my business" and "I don't want to be special. I am just me". By being humble, the bad forces stay at bay and you can minimise the effects of a psychosis and mania. Trust me. It is more difficult than it sounds. Don't get me wrong, I take all of my medication diligently. The medication treats the level of the Neurotransmitters which are causing all of this after all. I am simply using all of the arsenal at my disposal to beat the demons.

You see, you are striving for balance and harmony and peace instead of mania and turmoil. So you must think and do things that will create this atmosphere. Put on a tranquil CD. Make yourself a cup of warm tea. Have a nice hot shower. Relax on the couch. Have a snooze. Now, I have Schizoaffective Disorder which is different to Schizophrenia and I know the symptoms are different. People with Schizophrenia seem to see things and hear voices all the time which is different to me. I mainly have delusions and hallucinations when manic. I sometimes think people with Schizophrenia communicate with all types of forces, not only bad ones. Maybe they can make friends with some of the voices and tell other more nasty ones to go away. I don't know. I am still observing and learning. I have two friends with the condition.

So basically to summarize ...

Too much brain activity, leads to greater connection with unseen world, leads to illness if not managed.

Anyway, that is a few of my thoughts and insights. Sorry for being so long winded. What do you guys think? Am I on the right track? I would really appreciate your comments. Good or Bad. Feel free to tear me down if you think its all rubbish. I am beyond being offended. Talk soon.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @joeblow

I'm hearing you loud and clear. That makes perfect sense. But I figure it is 'normal behaviour' I like the way you explain the grandiose side of things. Bye a simple quote. 'You are the best at everything' and 'come and join us' and defusing it with 'I am OK' & 'I don't want to be special.'*That's great thinking. I really like that... The thing is... There is the persecution side of things. Which fuels the grandiose side of things. AND VICE VERSA... Does that make sense? I've been desperately trying to defend and justify myself toward the persecution stuff... Through verbal or written words and explain myself to it. So I suppose that is reasoning with my thoughts. Which is a bad habit. Then, the grandiose side of things comes along. And I'm desperately trying to live up to these thoughts. Which brings euphoria and mania upon me. Because it's like I'm defeating the persecution side of things. And I figure. It's normal. Everyone goes through it. Why not put my thoughts in to verbal or written words. Tell my story. Become recognized. Give myself meaning and purpose. (It's a trap.) It's like the theory. A little bit of love. In a lot of fear. And a little bit of fear in a lot of love.

But yea. I'm hearing what you're saying. And like how your saying it. Because I do crave that sense of peace. That sense of having everything I need. That sense of being at one with the present moment. And getting what I need and want from it. Because I do feel like a goose when I'm getting swung around bye my delusions of persecution and delusions of grandiose! But what else is there in life?

I've showered. I've had a cup of coffee. I've listened to some music. I'm written. (writing is apart of the grandiose delusions) so is music) fueled bye the persecution)

My reality. My physical world around me. It gets boring. It's so easy to have a simple thought. A simple symptom. A delusion or grandiose. Or a delusion of persecution. A little bit of grandiose in a lot of persecution. And a little bit of persecution in a lot of grandiose. Don't tell me we don't all go through it? And yea, I've tapped onto it big. Time... And start expressing my thoughts in to verbal OR written words... Either defending myself against it. Explaining myself against it. Justifying myself against it. Reasoning with it. Or, bye putting my thoughts in too words as a coping mechanism...

I'm a broken man. With a broken mind. Either way... Who can help me?

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

@joeblow

My senses are constantly perceiving love or fear all around me. Noises, sights, smells, tastes and touches. Then my mind goes into the interpret mode. Use my perception mode. And the symptoms (thoughts) become like a raging river.

I am very sensitive toward. My self perception. My self actualization. I'm trying to gauge what others responses are.

So easily. I slip into think mode... And it really is a crushing weight upon me. It's devastating really.

Eude.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Thank you, @joeblow. Very kind of you to say.

Like a lot of us on here (by the sound of it) we feel that we are channeling something when we write (or otherwise artistically create)...

Me? I look upon it with slightly different terminology, but the same end result... I believe that truth is a pathless land, and we are all eminently capable of entering that land, and learning universal truths from it during our time there...

Then, oh then, the fun starts... sharing it with others, in the hope that our words live up to the truths that we have been focused and attentive enough to try to capture...
