Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Hello @Shaz51 Thank you so much for making me aware of this thread. The poems are terrific. @Silenus is talented and prolific. Most of my poems are a little different. They are really stories with really bad grammar. I simply just let my subconscious take over and let it all hang out there. For better or worse. Some turn out to be structured, rhyming poems. But most are not. I have Schizoaffective disorder and all the anxiety disorders under the sun, so I have heaps of material to work with. I hope it is ok if I share one that I wrote not long ago about my mania. (Sorry, I changed the poem. Thought the other one was too depressing).

The Fire Within

The fire within is burning,

The mind is frantically turning,

I cannot stop the words or thoughts tonight,

The head is getting confused,

Those surrounding me seem bemused,

Something within me doesn’t seem exactly right,

So I withdraw from communication,

Try to stop the unwanted elation,

Try to calm the nerves and put this fire out,

I’m not succeeding in my desire,

To quell this burning fire,

A boxer defeated within his final bout,

So I turn to God with my dilemma,

He knows of my agenda,

To survive another episode of this disease,

He doesn’t seem to do too much,

But through others I see his touch,

Calming my oceans and internal stormy seas.

Bit more uplifting 🙂

Many of my poems are about mania or depression and so they aren't all that nice.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @Sans911 Thanks heaps. I changed the poem I put up as it was a bit of a downer. It is hard to find something a bit uplifting as my poems are mostly about my struggles. I have a few about when I am going through a period of euthymia that are a bit more happy. What do you think of this one?

A Sweet Melody

At this hour, harmony resides within my chest,

My illness has given me some respite for a moment,

I start noticing things around me that I don’t usually,

The smile of the cashier at the supermarket,

The lyrics of a song on the radio,

The heat of the sun on my back,

So all consuming is this illness that everyday things disappear amongst its confusion,

This temporary feeling of wellness is just so welcomed,

Soothing rain in a long, harsh draught,

Food for the starving drifter,

But how long will this relief last?

You know, I would rather not know,

I just want to bask in the momentary delight of the sane,

However, of course, I do wish it could always be this way,

No anxiety,

No fear of losing ones mind,

No lengthy hospital stays,

With white rooms and plastic knives,

Don’t think of such things I tell myself,

Just allow this peace to reside within your soul,

Like you will never find it again,

Harmony is never something to be overrated,

It is the heavenly dream of the mentally ill,

It is their holy grail,

Just one night and day of sanctity,

Without fear,

Without delusion,

Without prejudice,

Just a sweet melody to sing to break the silence.

Another one off the top of my head... Too great the morning with open arms and acceptance of the suffering that lie waiting... In each day for me...

So close to home

What a blessing it would be. Too experience. No more suffering. What a blessing it would be. To experience. Reality. Without tears of sadness. And tears of joy. In my eyes...

My eyes that have seen. Far to much pain, suffering and anguish...

A lonesome man. Sitting on his chair. Listening. Too the heartbreak. Of another love song. Which he so badly. Wants to experience for himself Again. So he can know he had the privilege. Of being able to love. And to let go free. Just one more time...

A black dog. Quietly rests outside the door. Waiting for his. Master to let him inside...

The darkness of the night. Has been welcomed bye the morning light. Once again... The birds are singing... And one lonesome man... Searches for his love song... So he can finally. Not feel alone. In his world. That is dying around him... Like a shooting star. In the sky. That is seen bye nobodies eyes...

If there's one thing he has learnt... It's that... In the moment... Time has no ending... He's alive......

Eude.

Love the poems, @joeblow

I didn't think the very first one you put up was negative. I thought it was very real and connected with the things we go through.

Thanks for sharing... 🙂

Hugs and happy vibes beaming your way...

My worst fears. Have just come upon me. Like a stormy cloud. That was throwing my worst fears at me. Through the form of. Thoughts in the form of lightening bolts. It was paralyzing. And my conclusion. Is. That I'm helpless against my worst fears. And I might as well. Surrender against them. The traces of paranoid thinking. Always find me. When the storm clouds come.

Everything I have done wrong. Was on a plate. And the voices. Attached and picked to pieces everything I've ever done wrong. It made me think. People wanted to get me back. For every mistake. I had ever made. It is one of the most scariest things. I have experienced. The voices were angry. They were judging me. And planning to punish me. And it made me feel very afraid. And it was like I had to bargain and reason with them. Because after all. They were my worst fears. Which I could do nothing about. But I still had hope. And unfortunately it is so meaningful...

Poem - Amaze

Amaze

Life is a journey through a maze,
Each turn has the power to amaze;
Open your inner eye to new ways of seeing,
To finally arrive at the centre of your being.
