Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

So sorry @Adge, wish I could post a lovely Get well eCard for you (still can't do pictures). Sounds like your skin doesn't heal well and needs stronger (bigger) support strapping than steri-strips. Hopefully not so deep this time and will heal quucker. The universe isn't against you... just a broken world that burst at the seams where physical weakness is. It will pass, you know it 💙 Sorry I've not been around, just avoiding triggers a lot, but I'm good. Warmer today - get some sunshine 🌞

Hi @Former-Member Thanks, Good to hear from you.

Warmer weather, yes get some good sunshine.

Hugs (((EOR)))

I've goto curl up & cry now....

Mum’s words provoke fear, & feel (are meant to feel?) very threatening – triggers more severe dissociation (certainly feels like it does).

“You will be in deep shit, if you don’t go to see the Surgeon Immediately” - Mum’s exact words (on Answering Machine) this afternoon.

This is disempowering – Mum’s words make it even harder for me to take any action.

Provokes overwhelm - unsupportive, certainly not motherly (virtually ever).

Mum usually refuses to talk to me for about 2 weeks or more (does not pick up phone/ or hangs up on me) – after she has had an outburst like this.

So I will not hear from Mum for a long time now (if at all) – I certainly don’t feel comfortable talking to her, any time in the near future.

Biggest problem with open wounds is infection, that can get into the blood stream. Best to see a doctor regular 'till healed. Might need ABs. Hope you feel the benefits of getting rid of that stitch soon. Hang in there ,xox

Thanks @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51

Thanks everyone.

I finally got an appointment to see GP Dr for this afternoon.

No Doctor’s appointments were available yesterday.

My Steristrips (applied late Monday afternoon) had held most of the surgery wound split closed.

So only a smaller 1cm long split remained.

GP stitched remaining split closed – charged me an extra $25 for it (“Minor Procedure”)(that’s okay).

I have to go back in 7 day’s time, to have these (new) stitches removed.

Dr said to keep a waterproof dressing on it, not get it wet for 7 days.

Which I had guessed, & was already doing – since it split 2 days ago (Monday afternoon).

I'm getting there - Yes will be okay (I think/ Hope) @Former-Member Thanks.

Encouraging & motivational - Thank you everyone.

As several people said "I should not have to be so Pro-active, should not have to follow-up from Surgery complications" (Stuffups).

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Possible Infection - Tried to bring it to Doctor's attention (he was too busy)

Surgery wound is sore & a bit red -with some fluid discharge.

That's why Medical Centre Nurse thought it was infected - I thought it was (possibly) too.

I had the shivers then felt hot flushes (past few nights) in bed when rugged up comfy - I thought that was a sign of infection.

I remember having shivers & hot flushes when I came home - after one or two of my major surgeries.
