Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Hi @Shaz51 I haven't chosen to have less birds, sadly they diminish in numbers over time.

Expensive to purchase/ replace - Not individually, but collectively.

Home Dialysis sounds like a better option than spending 4 to 6 hours in hospital for Dialysis, several times each week.

I've known a few people who had to have Dialysis, & that's what they had to do.

That fistula does not sound pleasant or nice.

I had a Support Worker come this morning, & we managed to get some essential things.

I found 2nd hand new Shoes, to replace the pair that I'm wearing now, which have holes in their soles.

I bought some new pillows, because 2 of my pillows were so old that they were disintegrating into pieces.

Next I need new Towels, because nearly all of my Towels have huge holes & tears in them, & are worn thin & thread-bare.

Plus need new Pillow-Cases too.

This time of year is difficult, as all of my Activity Groups & Supports have shut-down for several weeks at least - So much less social contact.

Even Sane Recovery Club is not running any of its Online Zoom CHIME Support Groups, until February I think.

So I don't have any of that Social Contact or support either.

How about you?

Hi @Shaz51 I love your picture of the Cat with the Flowers, it's gorgeous.

Yes well I've had a few emotional shocks this week.

My Support Coordinator (under NDIS) has been made Redundant.

In fact their entire Support Coordination Section (of organisation), including more than 20 people has been shut down.

So I'm hoping that I can still have my same Support Coordinator person, when she moves to a new organisation (new employer) in a few week's time.

So more adjustment & instability for me, when I've only been with the NDIS for about 6 weeks.

We have had some 40C days here, though less hot days than is usual for this time of year.

Mostly mid-30's C.

Summers are always dry & hot here, no rain at all.

I hope you don't get a cyclone.

No danger of any cyclones here, except in the far north of WA (eg Broome etc).

My Bengalese finches have a fully fledged baby Bengalese, just out of the nest today.

I'm so happy (excited) - My Bengalese finches have not produced any babies in quite a few years.

Hi @Shaz51 Sorry to hear about the lots of blood tests. I've had some blood tests too.

Hot here too, 40C on Tuesday, 38C or so the last few days.

I lost one Canary the other day - He was too inquisitive for his own good, hanging around at the Aviary door waiting for an opportunity. Then out he went.

Fortunately for me this Canary has missing tail feathers & cannot fly properly - So I Re-caught him with my Bird net. This was the first time that I have ever Re-caught an escaped Bird.

Rain & flooding sounds scary - None of that here on the West Coast.

Hot & dry this time of year.

I have a new Fridge - Rather exciting, as I have not bought a Fridge in 25 years, since I bought my small Bar Fridge in 2000.
