Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Hi @Adge, looking for you, how are you?

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member Thanks for looking for me.

I hope you are okay, with your big move.

As much as my neighbours (on both sides) take advantage of me frequently, & throw rubbish over the fence etc - I do not want to have to move.

It took too much sweat & tears to set this place up, & to grow my whole garden from scratch.

Disrespectful rude & nasty people should have to move (they don't belong here), not me.

My Mum is at it again - leaving self-centred & invalidating messages on my answering machine.

I will not phone her back, until I feel in a stronger state to deal with Mum's negative stuff.

If I am lucky (& things work out) - I will be back in hospital in 3 to 4 week's time - to get rid of the Rupture caused by these internal stitches (from last surgery) poking out.

I saw a lovely Art Exhibition yesterday (local shopping centre), the works of my Yoga Teacher's husband - it was the highlight of my week. I have not been to any Art Gallery in years.

I hope your weekend is good, or at least okay.

Don't know what to say @Adge, so much there happening for you... and can't post images anymore. You'll have to block your mum. Took me 55yrs before I could do that, really hard but we have equal responsibility to our own emotional welfare. And you deserve lots of TLC atm 💙 Sorry your neighbours are crap. Not fair. Ask God to deal with them. Do you rent (can't remember)
I'm nearly finished packing, 48hrs to go 'till truck. Just my wardrobe (cull), linen and kitchen to pack. I've sorted and tossed so much stuff. Really sore tonight. Gonna have to take something to sleep.
Please let me know (tag me here) how your surgery goes. Pitty they messed up - must be so frustrating. All the best with that btw, try keep chin up 💙

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Thanks @Former-Member All the Best to you - especially with your move.

We will get there - though it's not always clear where There (destination) actually is....

My psychologist was very affirming, which none of my relatives ever are - they minimised & dismissed my surgeries (as being nothing important).

Psychologist said:

"So glad you pursued the issue despite the challenges I know you felt in doing that. Hopefully it will be resolved. Day surgery is better!"

"Hope the air purifier does something helpful. Awesome that you just got onto it!!"

"You’ve achieved a lot" 😊

That really helped, as I'm not hearing that positive stuff from anyone else in person.

Thanks @Shaz51 You are amazingly positive & resilient (I think) - despite your having chronic pain, & worrying major health issues (& waiting for a kidney).

I know it's not possible to be positive all the time (not realistic either).

I find your example & your efforts inspiring ((( @Shaz51 )))

Ditto ((( @Former-Member ))) I find you insightful & amazingly resilient - despite many challenges & hardships.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi everyone,

@Former-Member @Shaz51 @ Sorry I cannot work the Tags - I'm so exhausted.

My Surgery Wound has split (again) - from last Wednesday's Surgery (5th of August)

It was suddenly painful – so I checked, & that’s what had happened.

The surgeons had not Steri-Stripped that half of the wound – there was nothing to hold it closed.

I’ve been given no follow-up nurse visits (after hospital) – I’ve been left unsupported, to deal with wound-care myself.

I’ve just done an emergency trip to the Chemist (for advice) - though they did not look at the wound Split.

-They sold me Steri-Stripps, to hold it closed.

When the Surgical wound Split (2015), which happened after my 3rd major Bowel Surgery (Reversal Op) – it caused a major Hernia.

The Hernia meant I had to have another (4th) major surgery (insertion of mesh) – so this scares me, it’s very triggering.
