Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Oh @Former-Member I'm thinking of you - with your move, your test results, & your health concerns.

I'm thinking of you @Shaz51 With your kidney & needing transplant.

I've tried many times to post photos, in the past week or or - with no success.

So everyone missed out on my intentions to add some cheer (funny pictures) for myself & others.

A phone call from Mum (this afternoon) dragged me down into the gutter - she is always very negative & critical.

It's emotionally (& physically) draining to talk to her - always has been.

It's commitment or affection (on my part) that keeps me in touch - yet it costs me.

That's why I live on the other side of the country (from them).

Hi @Adge, my mum was the reason I had to distance myself from the Sydney family years ago. I use to pretend the phone went flat or someone was at the door... and had to go, to keep calls short. They can hook us in.

It's so hard to keep healthy boundaries @Former-Member With relatives who respect no boundaries.

Isn't it?

I'm sorry that you had that struggle too (with relatives).

I have not been able to resolve mine.

Is it something about Sydney (I'm from there)?...

Just kidding....

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Yeah, let's blame Sydney @Adge... How was your day? I dropped of a van load of stuff at the top shop today, another load to load for Vinnie's tomorrow. Stupid how i collect all this stuff :face_with_rolling_eyes: bought back a teapot & jar (can't help myself 😗) Feeling a bit jumpy since but fine. New Tennant inspection tomorrow. Too bad if they want tidy lol

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member I hope your tennant inspection goes well for you.

I love ceramic (glazed) teapots - so if I was in your situation, I would have collected it too.

Today was hard (physically & emotionally) - I got all my aviaries & cages done, re-stocked.

A Fischer's Lovebird forced the cage door open, squeezed out - then was happily flying around my laundry & kitchen.

He didn't want to go back in, but he had to (used bird net) - that's where his food & water is.

My ex-work would not produce (send) my Redundancy Payslip (from 4 weeks ago) - despite my asking for it several times.

They finally sent it to me this afternoon - only because I got the Union Industrial Rep to ask them for it.

Ridiculous, to have to fight for a Payslip - when they had a legal obligation to send it to me (as far as I know).

@Adge, do NDS like your workplace are so unprofessional... incompetent and just hopeless!!! You don't need that rubbish, bur hope you can stay afloat re $ somehow. How many teapots have our collected? I'm different, I'm liking together sterling silver kitchenware... almost complete. Think it started for the campervan..maybe if I entertained more I'd be me 'fancy' Do you drink a lot of tea? I love zenglish breakfast 😊☕

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member What is NDS, what does that stand for?

I only have two ceramic teapots - One brown, the other white with blue leaf designs on it.

I like those old styles.

I use teabags, I've rarely used those teapots.

I never had any Stirling Silver Cutlery - my parents had some.

I like tea, yet I rarely drink it.

Having daily fatigue issues, I need the caffeine in Coffee (to keep me going).

Earl Grey tea (with Bergamot in it) is my favourite - I love that taste, although some tea-drinkers cannot stand it.

Tea is much more relaxing to drink, than coffee.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member

Hi everyone.

I now have an Air Purifier thingy.

My Allergies have been intolerable (despite antihistamines) - so my Psychologist suggested that.

Unusual for me, I went out & bought it Before my Surgeon appointment - soon after Psych appointment.

Often I would find that too hard (feeling tired & overwhelmed), & would postpone it until another time. So we shall see if that helps.

Yes I now need another Surgery - something I wanted to avoid at all cost.

The Stitches/Sutures are Permanent (not dissolvable), the Surgeon confirmed - they would never have dissolved.

So he needs to open me up again, to remove them & hopefully resolve the pain & inflammation issues.

Surgeon wants to do the operation in about 4 week's time (if available).

Fortunately for me, it's a Day Surgery (procedure) - so I won't have to stay in hospital!

I get to go home that day - Yippee....

My Low Income Health Care Card came in very handy - instead of charging me $ up front, they Bulk Billed me Medicare paid for it.

So tired, it's been a very long day.
