Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

mmm @Former-Member
I don't think anyone is to blame for getting overweight. there are so many factors that affect people in so many ways.

im sorry about the inflamed gallbladder though-do they need to give you ABX or anything for it?

if its dislodged don't they have to put it back in place like they would a dislocation?

I haven't found out my results yet. I have to wait till Friday arvo to hear back about all the tests ive done.
it keeps getting harder here now. they have told me I also basically need to pick whether I want what little fertility I have or if I want to get rid of my health symptoms. have to discuss what the next options would be so its hard atm as to what to do.

@outlander, yes - on ABs, and no,vshe didn't mention fixing patella, vindicated itsvanbold injury that's caused the cartilage under it to ware to the bone... when I get copy of results I'll research it further. She said only physio - and analgesia for it. Can't take anti-inflammatory re asthma...
That's aweful that you're told you might lose fertility. Can you put some eggs on ice? Or is it womb / Cx problem. Sorry I haven't kept up.
Your results are very slow coming back, tell them to get there finger out lol The waiting a hard. Blackdog always hasbus thinking worse case scenarios. Are you still caring for pop?

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

hmm sounds quite painful @Former-Member I hope at least maybe physio might help. they could help with taping. when I ride horses and things I have to tape my ankle and my knee up otherwise the old injuries cause more pain then what its worth riding for.

I have pcos and possibly endo. They have already said through the other tests they've run its unlikely I might have kids unless through ivf or something like that however with all the symptoms im getting I cannot handle it. so I currently have an IUD but 7 months in and its making things a lot worse then better so they've told me to try a med for 2 months on top of that, if that doesn't work then I take out the IUD (which I want to do anyway) but it also means I don't have other options in the contraceptive field as im at the highest amounts of everything they can try. I don't know what the next steps will entail til I speak with the gyno next time but she has already said the next steps will affect fertility.

the results are back now but the specialist only works in the clinic on a Friday, the rest of the time he rotates through the public and private hospitals doing procedures/on call for emergencies/ and treating people that way as well.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Thanks for asking @outlander - Liver ok, fatty changes and inflamed gallbladder do that's what's probably causing discomfort. Gotta watch diet a while. Also knee x-ray showed dislodged patella and trip two tendons worn down to bone, accounting for pain and weakness. So at least it's not in my head. Trouble is, that was my good knee 'till now. Not allowed to complain though 'cause I let myself get overweight. And they won't even think about knee replacement 'till I lose a LOT of weight, which is impossible for me. So, delegate balance of staying active and not overdoing it...
All part of getting old.
Are you doing ok?
I'M GOING OFFLINE NOW, TRIVIA POLICE AND BACKSTABBERS ON MY CASE TONIGHT . BYE

@Former-Member 💖👍:angry_face_with_horns: lol

Hope the knee and back pain has had a chance to ease for you a bit today? I know you have such a lot to do in preparation for your move. But I am worried you are trying to do too much. My concern being that if you push yourself too hard now, your physical health could become worse. Just would like to see you pace yourself carefully.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Thanks @Former-Member, I am pacing myself, resting throughout the day when I need to. Hiring removalist will help a lot, even Hough I'll only fill 1/3 of his truck for same price, is gonna help. Got the heat packs on and resting in. Really getting cold though, must put heater on. Just checked, gonna get to zero tonight.
Shaz, I'll try different threads but it seems across the board.
