Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Hi @Former-Member ... just a quick one ... wanted to wish you the best with your appointment today to get your test results.

Understandable to be a little worried, but hopefully today will put your worries to rest. And enable you to continue to tackle the big move.

Hi also @Adge @outlander @Shaz51 @Owlunar ... sorry I've not been around in the last week. Trying to find a way to come back, and feel safe, without making others uncomfortable. It means I am very limited in where I can go. Will try to get in touch with you all soon. @Owlunar ... you have been in my thoughts very much over the past few days. 💕

Hi @outlander

Thanks for updating me - that sounds pretty horrible really - I really care about that and you - and I have no idea of what it could be in spite of my slightly greater knowledge of anatomy. Mostly I know bones, muscles and tendons etc - internal medicine is not something I have looked at that much

But I would love to know - and for more than an intellectual insight - but how you are - I will keep you in my thoughts and follow you in the forums -

Yes - you have had a really bad run of luck with your health in the 3 or so years I have known you - the first time was when you had an infection of some kind in your breast - yes - that was something puzzling and scary - and since then one thing after another

#Life is what happens to us when we are busy making other plans# (John Lennon) - I am sure you have other things you would rather be doing - wouldn't we all - but you are so young to have so much happening - and you are so mature - or you come over that way with your writing -

Are you well enough to work wrangling the horses and Pop - who needs wrangling too I think - I hope you can but certainly understand if you cannot

Sending my best thoughts

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

I would not say that things have settled @Former-Member Just surviving, putting one foot in front of the other.

Despite my Post-Grad qualifications & long working experience - I have tremendous trouble obtaining any new job (in recent years).

I just have not been able to keep pace with all the fancy software presentations & printing layouts - that are the only way to "Get across the Line" (Get an employer's attention) these days.

Plus right now is the highest unemployment rate in 25 to 30 years.

It is being vastly underestimated (under-reported), & is most likely 15% to 20% at least (I'm told).

I see the Surgeon (new Referral) next week - to see if he will operate.

To remove the internal stitches (sutures), that have been sticking out through my tummy (for 14 months) - since my last bowel/ hernia surgery.

Yes they do hurt - every day.

My GP Dr could not deal with it (he tried to).

How did you go yesterday? @Former-Member

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Thanks for asking @ outlander - Liver ok, fatty changes and inflamed gallbladder causing discomfort. Gotta watch diet a while. Also knee x-ray showed dislodged patella and trip two tendons worn down to bone, accounting for pain and weakness. So at least it's not in my head. Trouble is, that was my good knee 'till now. Not allowed to complain though 'cause I let myself get overweight. And they won't even think about knee replacement 'till I lose wt++ which is impossible for me. So, delecate balance here, of staying active yet not overdoing it... All part of getting older.
Are you doing ok?
