Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Yes @outlander, the scans were for those tummy pain. All a slow process but I also waited extra week to see if dr duty of care kicked in re results needing more treatment, took her a week... but that kinda confirms my fears. Then again, never know.
Your mass sounds serious, hope not. Feel free to talk about it here. I've not told anyone irl about my scans.

Hi @Former-Member I hope your test results are reassuring, not stressful.

You caught as I'm logging off & going to bed.

I never have time for anything on Thursday nights (after Yoga class) - it's eat dinner in a hurry, then go to bed.

F&H Gave me some other options (instead of Swimming), on other thread -

So I can "Keep on Skiing", "Keep on Bushwalking", or maybe "Keep on Yoga-ing"....

More achievable for me than swimming.

This whole Redundancy business (repercussions of), has been stressful.

My Union lodged Unfair Dismissal Claims for up to 70 of us (70 staff dismissed) - which resulted in a compromise.

Ex-employer produced a Statement of Service (requested by Union), which will be helpful.

Plus a small amount of extra $ payout.

This has gone on for almost a month, so I will be relieved to see the end of it.

I've got places to go, things to do, people to meet (in theory) - well that's the romantic view (hope).

Actually I have energy (at all) to go anywhere - but we've goto have hops & plans....

Golly @outlander

You have rotten luck with health problems - what's this new mass? Like a hernia ? or what? or don't you know?

I have missed out on so much taking time our for health problems of my own - obviously I am feeling better tonight though I am going to bed soon so I don't overdo things

I really wish you the best and think that your life has to have been turned up-side-down and this is never good

Sorry Outlander - I will be watching for your post now - knowing this much

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

hello @Owlunar no I don't have very good luck with my health, between my stomach issues, the pancreas issues and now more ladies health issues its getting very hard to manage to say the least.

I have some really tough decisions about the future with the womens health things. not really sure how to make them yet though.

the mass isn't a hernia. they have done the mri scans and blood tests that will check to see if its more of a cancerous mass or maybe if its a cyst. the rest are to check for blood clots or blockages in the stomach and pancreas and surrounds because im struggling to eat one standard meal in a day. or even just to have any more then a few sips of water because I get severe stomach pains. when im not eating its more of an ache that radiates from the centre upwards in my chest and out towards my ribs, sides and back. not very nice atm and has been constant for more then a month now so im under the care of gastroenterologist/hepatologist combined to hopefully find out what it is. I get the results back next Friday from all the tests and hopefully by then I will know when I will be going in for gastroscopy as well.
