Need time to myself

Need time to myself

Hi everyone

I've been suffering mental illness for a while (years) and have been doing everything for everyone over the past 30 years of my married life. If it wasn't for the kids (which I don't mind doing) it is for my husband or for his mum or for my parents (when they were talking to me). It was me for everyone else except myself.

So now I feel that I want and need to have time to myself. And not just an hour here and there. I would love to go away for a night or weekend just on my own. Wake up when i want, eat when and what I want and just do things that i want to do without worrying about anyone else.

But the problem is - how? How do I go away or even bring up the idea to my husband. He will think something is wrong, he will think I want to leave our marriage. We have always done everything together and that is probably my fault. Because I think that growing up I always wanted someone with me.

I would love to just hop on a plane and go someone on my own, just some time to myself to be me.

The only time this has ever happened was when i was admitted to a mental health facility and I was there for 2 weeks. It was heaven. I could do what I wanted (more or less), joined in groups, acitivies. I was allowed to go for walks on my own; I was able to stay in my own room during the day if I wanted to; I was able to just sit with a coffee at the cafe at the hospital. I was able to just be me.

That is why I so much want to go back in there. I can regroup myself, refocus on life, things that are important. I can just be on my own.

I'm not saying I want to leave my husband or children, that I don't think I want. I just want to be free a little for some of the time.

But I don't know how to get this across to my husband. Now I am feeling anxious and teary because I feel that I am to blame; that I should be home with him and the kids.

I just wish soimetimes I could just run away and be on my own.

Any advice would be great.

Hi @BlueBay,

Sorry to hear you are feeling so overwhelmed today. What sorts of things do you normally do when you feel this way? Is there anything that helps? Sometimes just being able to talk about how you are feeling can be effective.

Sending virtual hugs your way

Hi @BlueBay

I'm so sorry to read you haven't been feeling very good. It seems like you have made exceptional progress with your treating team though. What a huge step you have taken being so open with them. I hope that openness continues to benefit you.

You mentioned last night that you would call your psyc today and let them know about your negative thoughts. Have you done that yet?

Thinking of you,

Nik

Haven't called Pysch. He is not in today. But I will call later if not tomorrow. I'm so down. Nothing is helping. I'm at work and it's hard to put in a happy face. When all I want to do is run away. I need to ring my psych now. I'm not good. I don't know what else to do.

Re: Need time to myself

I did ring my psych and told receptionist I was not coping and having negative thoughts. I told her i need to speak to my psych. She said I was brave for calling and that she would send an urgent mess to him. He did call but I missed his call. He left a message to say he will call me tomorrow.
Just want to curl up and do nothing. Hate being so depressed.

Re: Need time to myself

I was not well again last night. I think this depression, emotional feeling I am having at the moment is affecting muy physical health. I just feel like I want to stop everything, my life, my world.

But ....... today is another day and I have to fight it; as much as I feel I can't I just have to. Tears are flowing and I just want to be cared for like a child. I so miss my dad.

I hope I can have a chat with my psych today. Wish i could take today off work but i can't we are already short staffed. So many mixed emotions right now - i just have to keep going; there is no other way is there??

Wish i could stop crying.

Hi @BlueBay

I'm really to hear you had a tough night. You do an amazing job at fighting these lows and an amazingly resilient attitude.

You mentioned you have called Lifeline before, are there any other strategies you find helpful to get you through these nights?

I'm not sure if you've seen it before, but there's a great discussion called Coping Box, which was started by @Crazy_Bug_Lady. It's a thread full of strategies and distractions people use when they feel like they aren't coping. The idea is that all the strategies and distractions are in one place and it's easy to refer to when the low moods hit.

Perhaps you might get some ideas or could add your own?

I hope your psych is helpful today - he/she sounds very responsive. And I hope work provides some distraction too.

We're here if you need us today.

Re: Need time to myself

Hello @BlueBay. I empathise. There are charity organisations who have 'respite' facilities; often in coastal areas, which can provide the break you need without breaking the bank.
I also take walks with my pooches (or just my iPod and headphones) and leave the children in the care of neighbours just to get some space. I'm a single mum, and have not had a holiday of any kind for 14 years. And I have had hospital stays following surgery that have been blissful even though I've been in pain. You are most definitely not alone. I like the Mother's Day/ birthday request. It may be the easiest way to broach the subject.

Hello @BlueBay

I have been curling up in bed a bit which is my way of recovering and facing the next day or task.

I think you are amazing: working, looking after family, MIL. Glad you have good therapists working with you. Hang in there.

Re: Need time to myself

<my phone won't let me link anyone directly, and for this I apologise >
I recently started going out of an evening (with a support worker because of my issues) fortnightly.
My kids are younger: primary/middle school. But my eldest told me that although he doesn't really like it when I go out, and he is unable to get to sleep while I'm out, that he's noticed that I'm a much happier mum as a result. Your children are likely to be aware that you are not in a great space. They will see that change when you are able to take your life into your own hands- or, in other words, when you make choices/changes for you.
Much love and light for your journey. Xx

Hi @Former-Member@NikNik@Appleblossom@GothMum

Thanks all for your posts and support. My psych did call me back and I told him i am not good. He asked me what do I want him to do and I told him I need to go back to hospital and he said why. I told him I need time alone to think, to let my body rest and get my thoughts together. He said i can go in but for only a week.

I have to let him know by next Tuesday if I change my mind, otherwise I will go in next Thursday. After speaking with him (on my lunch break) I broke down and couldn't stop crying. A close friend who works with me asked how I was and I told her that i may be going back to hspital and that i want everything to end incl. my life. She was upset and said pls don't do anything, i promised her i wouldn't because i love my kids far too much. She said to me she wished she could take all this pain away from me and that she understands what it's like as she has suffered depression before.

Tonight I am home and feel exhausted.
