Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

Hmmm. Where to start? I’m not sure starting with a metaphor that brings mixed emotions is perhaps the best way to title a new thread, but just now it feels apt.

@NikNik has put up her picture of recovery up in the past. At first I hated it because I wanted that nice straight linear line (expectations) ......the one where the magic wand comes included 😯😝

So now that I’m finally accepting the reality that the road to recovery doesn’t exist on google maps (and there isnt a magic wand), I'm left with having to make it up as I go along.........and if there was one there wouldn’t be a measurement of how long the road was 😏

Please feel free to join in and tell your stories too of the good, the bad and the ugly of recovery.

😊💜

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

So glad to read this @Teej 💜

I have WA visitors this weekend, but I will find a moment to have a watch of this TED talk.

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

Hey @Teej. Wondering how your last night was and whether you kept on the path you were on when you posted.

I have just finished watching the TED talk you shared. While I was watching it I was thinking of it less in terms of opioid addiction specifically, and more in terms of the things many of us do here when we're pain. It makes a lot of sense when it comes to SH and SI, and other self-destructive behaviours. I was thinking of the forum also and how, so many times, the genuine connection I have felt here has helped reroute my self-destruct mode/path.

It was a really interesting talk (love TED talks). You have such a great ability to look inside and work things out, and make connections and new understanding.

Hope the day ahead is one with good in it for you.

❤

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

Thanks @CheerBear. That was exactly the same take that I got from that talk. I’m kind of happy you did too. I think that although she talked about social media not being helpful because you rarely get to the kind of deep and vulnerable conversations, I was thinking that the forum was different because it’s a place where we really do do those things. I think I use emoticons instead of eye contact or body language to help convey that meaning too.

Hmmm last night......well yes and no. I would say that I mostly did. I did keep pushing myself to stay on the path but I also very mildly and safely did something that I knew would help me sleep through the night so I could start today in a much better place which has worked 😊.

My muddle of the last few weeks doesn’t feel so big just now. It began when I was told that I was dropped from cmh and therefore wasn’t eligible for any more support or programs. It was the pain that I had failed and was deemed unfixable that has had me very distressed. The reason I was given was that the psychiatrist was taking me on privately so I no longer qualified. I also was feeling very insecure as well and thought that she would retire and therefore they had got rid of me through a back door so to speak.

On Wednesday I learned that that was not true at all from the psychiatrist. I am not private and technically still part of cmh. It’s just that the funding model for her to see me is slightly different. The service now bulk bills me through Medicare but that money doesn’t go to the psychiatrist but the service which is technically the public hospital......I think. Long story long I broke down and let everything out to the psychiatrist and we talked about lots. She does want to help me and made some commitments to me that helped me feel like she had my back and that she genuinely thought she could help. She committed to the next 5 appointments fortnightly which was something I could hold on to and it felt like hope. She was also going to go in and bat for me to continue the support groups. I told her that I was ok for 6 months more of them and then understood that hopefully I will be on my feet a bit more to be more involved in community based things.

I think that renewed hope and learning more more about my brain from that TED talk and making those connections to what really happens for me helped lots get through something that only 3 months ago would have tipped me right over.....although having said that if it hadn’t been my sons biggest few weeks of his uni I may have pushed it too far too. I’ve had a big protective factor to stay safe in the last few weeks.

Thanks for being you through all this too @CheerBear, @Faith-and-Hope. I’ve been in a really strange headspace on the forum over the last few months. I should say in real life too. I’ve been grateful for your connection and support. You’ve both been and integral part of my growth and I always learn and am inspired by you. And @Appleblossom, you too. I can see how much you’ve grown over our time on the forum as well and that inspires me as well. And there are many others too, and that is forever evolving.

Much of the above I’ve got from the forum. 💜🤗

@Teej I am so happy to read this post this morning. It sounds like you have done a lot and achieved a lot through it in this last little while, and are feeling much more secure in your situation. Bravo ❣️

I have found my moment to watch the TED talk ..... back shortly .....

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

Ok .... back again .....

Wow.

That goes to the heart of our problem, for sure ..... my mr. has been wired from birth to restrict his social connections to a very limited few, and that is absolutely what we are witnessing now. It has done an over-ride on all the connectivity I had been trying to put in place across our married life, and has basically reduced it all to my interconnectivity, while he has taken himself out of the arena.

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

I agree that the forum is different @Teej. That share vs compare, the reducing stigma, the connection over the tougher times/stuff... it is all here. I know the speaker mentioned eye contact as being important, but for some eye contact can be scary and doesn't help (I almost always drop my eyes and can't look at someone when I talk about hard stuff). The forum to me is like those rare gems of FB posts that show the 'real' side of things.

What happened with the psychiatrist and CMH sounds horrible. I think I would have flipped with that. It shouts of instability, insecurity and hopeless causing 😏 like @Faith-and-Hope, I too am really happy to have read your post this morning.

Thank you for your kind words Teej. I've been giant sized grateful for you and what you have brought to my life. So many times you've caught and redirected a potentially very wonky path for me and you consistently show courage and strength when you ride out your storms. It's a privilege to get to walk alongside you on you road to/through recovery ❤

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

@Faith-and-Hope. I think that the TED talk demonstrates that addiction is many different things and everyone fills that need through so many different ways. It was good to see the physiological/psychological side as well as the social.

I think it made me realise that often when I need that hit of something to make me feel good my underlying need is probably connection. I think the thing that has got messy for me is that I’ve tried to deny that because of my dependent label, although I think it is a little more complex for me as well (I need to develop more intrinsic skills too).

There is is a big me too with eye contact @CheerBear. I’m much better now. I used to be so bad I’d wear my hair over my face in sessions (one psychiatrist asked me to remove my curtain from my face). I have a lot of long hair so his curtain description was probably pretty accurate. Having said that I struggle with eye contact as well for anything vulnerable or serious. Eye contact for me is pretty much about connecting through humour 😜😳.

Re: Walking on the road to recovery ........ 🤔

Agreed ❣️

It’s what I have felt about the forums since I arrived here, despite the traumatic aspects that we are all aware of.

And it is so lovely hearing that message from @CheerBear too, that your riding of the storms both within and without is an absolute strength-in-vulnerability state ..... inspiring to others on the same sort of journey @Teej ..... hoping you will take it on board more, the more your forum friends tell you ..... 💜💐
