are you ok @MovinOn1? you sound kind of angry? I hope I didn't make things hard for you.

The taper thing is done in harm reduction / moderation programs like HAMS - http://hams.cc/taper/ - I wasn't recommending it though. It's very much not working for me... seems to for some people though. I guess people need to find what works for them.

Nope, not angry, just making sure I covered both articles and scientific studies on my reference points. I like the science of stuff, if it's not backed up by good science, I'm a big sceptic.

There were a lot of articles stating "Alcohol will contribute to breast cancer", but not so many with good references. I like to be thorough. Sometimes the facts won't convince people, however, the more I can provide, the better. It's like climate change, there are so many scientists out there with studies backing the science, however, people choose to ignore the good science, and believe the junk science.

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum

See, even through I've been able to stop drinking (I hit my rock bottom and had to make a change before something even worse happened), I was super shocked to find out (and it was via the ABC's Insight Program) that just three drinks are enough to raise the incidence of breast cancer a lot. I'm also pretty shocked that this isn't well known.

I mean, we all know that alcohol is bad, but I had no idea how bad even a few drinks a day was. Not to mention the fact that women tend to take on the responsibility of birth control, and taking the pill is already a big contributor to breast cancer.

Not everyone can just stop drinking, and a lot of people relapse many many times. Alcoholism is evil and so damn tiring.

Want to go out tonight? Well, first I need to figure out how I'll get to where I want to go, can't drive if I'm drinking. Hopefully it's only a train ride, or a bus, not two buses and a train and more. I'd nevr be able to get home drunk if that was the case.

Also, I don't want people to know how much I drink, so I'll have to slip in a few before I go out, then, in case they aren't drinkers, I'll need an exit strategy so I can get home to drink.

If I'm going to be drinking at home, I'll need to make sure I have enough on hand to get pass out drunk. or I'll drive to the shop for more and that's bad.

I can't afford to be drinking $20, or $10 bottles of wine every night, since I'd drink at least two. Looks like the "Cleanskins" on the shelf at the supermarket are only $3.99, I'll get three. If I buy more, I'll have to drink them all, so that's enough for today.

There was always so much planning to do so that I wouldn't get caught. I would make sure I'd leave a party really early so I didn't get blind drunk in front of everyone, then I'd drink at home.

Hangovers were two days for the bigger sessions, and I'd waste those two days being sick.

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum

ok i see @MovinOn1. i agree that many people tend to look to science less now than they should. they believe what uncle so and so's cousin told them is equal to a series of peer-reviewed studies. that's a problem in a whole range of areas beyond addiction.

i fully believe that alcohol is harmful and that the amount i'm consuming is harmful. i believe it intellectually/empirically/medically and from experience - i'm starting to see physical consequences. the hard thing for me though is translating that knowledge into some kind of motivation to act. i don't know how to make myself care about those consequences enough to do something about them.

someone please tell me if what i write on this topic is inappropriate. i've not actually said it anywhere else. not even to my psych team.

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum

@-Rayne- I understand that. Logically I know alcohol is no good for me, especially the amounts I drink, but tranlating that into quitting is another thing. Logic and action are two different things.
@MovinOn1 - I've heard a lot of cancer stories relating to alcohol. Increase in mouth, throat cancers as well.
Reducing alcohol intake - instead of just quitting - is also used when you take a particular (name not allowed to be mentioned) medication to help get you off alcohol.
I have had success with reducing my consumption, noticeably while on this med. And drinking more heavily when off the med.

Bubbles - It makes me so angry. I’m a (mostly) recovered alcoholic since 2010. My rock bottom was Pancreatitis that left me diabetic and needing insulin.

I’ve done a lot of reading on addiction and one doctor refers to alcohol as “the mother of all drugs” and basically says it affects more neurotransmitters than any other drug out there.

Yet it’s not only legal, it’s very socially acceptable. I’ve been through times when walking past a bottle shop has almost made me cry with the amount of willpower it’s taken to resist.

I’ve spoken to doctors about it and apparently the Alcohol lobby in Australia is very powerful. Too bad for us trying to stay away from it.
