I am 55 and my family have just found out the reality of my problem. It's been building for years but worse the last 2 months. My 15 year old daughter found me drunk in bed at 10.30 am yesterday. What kind of a Mother does that? I am a single parent. My Mum and Dad in their mid 70s came over and we had a big talk. I am ASHAMED

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum

Hi,

I am an alcoholic - I've been alcohol free since 31 September, 2014. Shortly after I stopped drinking, my life went to shit. In November my father died, in December, my grandfather died (my Dad's dad), & I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. In January I was fired from my job. It took three months to find a new job.
Throughout all of that, I did not drink. I've had pently of ups and downs in my life since then, and I will not drink.
I now truly hate the tatse of alcohol, it's awful, all of it. I think about the horrific hangovers I used to get and am thankful that they are not a part of my life now.
I can think on the terrible things that I did, or the shame I carry from that life before, but that is not helpful. Therapy, not dinking and time have all helped me.

I cannot express how much doing DBT changed my life. I started DBT in 2018 and stuck with the program for two years, my life is so much better, I have tools that I can use to cope with each day and to curb my responsive destructive behaviour from BPD. Without DBT, I'd be in a mch worse place than I am now.
If you are offered a place in a DBT program, take it and throw your whole effort into getting better. It can't be any worse than the hellish exeistence you've lived up until now, right?

Here with you throughout this @Maizie I just saw your other thread too - I'm wondering if you're looking to see a therapist again for your trauma? I've experienced trauma too in addition to other MI and have found that when I stop seeing professional support, things tend to just go downhill, and I've realised that at least for me it's something I need to keep doing for perhaps the rest of my life.

There are a number of different ways to address addiction to alcohol (e.g. AA, addressing underlying trauma, DBT as @MovinOn1 mentioned) - I hope you find something that works for you

Take good care 💐
