Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum
@NatalieS. Previously when I had given up I had strong urges to drink every afternoon. It was intense. In the end I would take a nap as soon as I got the urge. Later in the day and at night, I could cope better. If you can't take a nap, how about going for a walk at that time - or scrubbing the shower, the floor - anything physical and repetitive. I hope this helps.

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum
I'm really strugging with this at the moment. I wouldn't call myself an alcoholic but I do have physical withdrawals and haven't gone a day without drinking (except when in hospital) for the last 3 years or so. I'm really feeling the physical effects of it now and trying to moderate without much success. I haven't managed one 24 hour period alcohol-free, which is kind of disheartening, but occasionally I do have day where the intake is less. I've been trying different methods/plans/programs - HAMS, SMART etc. - I think I'm just low on willpower though. Nice to have a thread to talk about it. Thanks @Bubbles3

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum
Its hard work @-Rayne-
Whether you call youself an alcoholic or not. Being dependent on it and withdrawal from it is not easy. I remember going through the withdrawal stage and it is hard. Its the hardest thing iv ever had to do. I could go one day with out drinking but that all i could do. After one day i would start shaking and my body would be going into shock.
So i know what you mean. It took me professional help by being in hospital for 6 week to come off of it. Thaats the only way i could stop. I tried AAs meetings and other stuff but it never worked.
I hope you get some help that you need. You deserve it. You do need professional help and will power too to get through it.
I wish you all the best

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum
Hi Everyone, I have a problem with alcohol too. The most I can go without a drink is about 4 days. I don't suffer any withdrawal symptoms fury this time, he fact I feel pretty good! But I crave alcohol because is gets me high! I do not want to go through life without getting high.importance
The thought of never drinking again makes me sad.
I have spoken to a few psychologists about this but didn't really come up with anything.

Sorry, I am typing on my phone and keep getting wrong words, as I'm not used to it!
I am fairly high functioning and don't drink at work. If I go to something work related, like social night, them I will be careful and only have
Someimes I'll drink in the morning if I don't have to go anywhere that day. I never feel sad or angry when I drink.

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum
Hi @Sahara
Its good to know if you think you might be an alcoholic. It take guts to except that might might be the case in the first place . 4 days is good and you should be proud of that. Maybe next time make it 5 days.
I use to drink first thing in the morning and thats where the problem starts. Maybe if you could hold of till lunch time instead. Doing one little step is a start. It only has to be one little step. Thats all it takes. I wish you luck

Re: Any recoverying alcoholic or alcoholic in the forum
Thanks @Bubbles3. I wish now that I'd not started again after I left hospital the last time - about 18 months ago. At the time, I wasn't thinking that I had a problem with it. Even though I was hugely excited to get out so I could have a drink, it didn't click with me.
@Sahara I don't want to have to live without it either. I guess that's why I keep struggling to moderate. Don't know if I could live without it but also don't think I want to. It's causing me a lot of problems though.
